“Practically Flawless”
Reviewed 4 March 2008

It couldn't get much better than lying on the comfortable Tempur-pedic bed, watching a DVD on the beautiful flat-screen television, with the ocean breeze blowing in from the balcony. We waited and waited for the perfect recipe for an Avalon Hotel to open up. What was their recipe? Wait no longer, it's finally here. Cozy rooms tout trendy, modern furnishings, with subtle room details, making this property stand-out and a very welcoming addition as Avalon's newest boutique hotel. We are seasoned travelers, and for many years we have been visiting Avalon. An astute hotelier team has responded, finally giving visitors a higher-end option of what will surely be an always booked mainstay. Notable amenities include dimmable lighting, Keurig single-serving hot beverage maker (which we are now immediately adding to our wedding registry), mini-fridge including complimentary bottles of water, microwave, plush chenille robes, aux input jack on the stereo including the cable, stemless wine glasses, and a roof-top deck with views of the harbor with nicely appointed furnishings. Don't miss the hidden tray located in the ottoman cushin. Book the owner's suite and enjoy a private jacuzzi (coming soon) and reclining rocking chairs that will take you further away than the quick one hour boat ride from "over town."

The only thing missing was a bottle-opener. The continental breakfast was modest. The hotel still lacks exterior signage so don't mistake it and pass by it like we did at first. The location is a short walk up a hill from the center of town. Service was great. Staff was friendly. Rooms are worth every penny paid for the total experience. We were told wireless internet is on the way. If you are looking for an upscale Avalon room priced less than the hotel's sister property, the Avalon, this is "the" place to stay. Request room 310, if it's available. It's the only ocean view location located furthest away from the street. We can't wait to return and welcome any future projects this team endeavors to bring to the hospitality industry.

Very modern and nice hotel! We would stay here again. My husband and I stayed at The Aurora for our 1st Anniversary trip. We called on Friday to see if they would allow us to stay for just 1 night (Saturday) and avoid the 2 night minimum--we couldn't stay for 2 nights. We arrived at about 11am (via the 9am Newport to Avalon Catalina Flyer). The hotel is off a side street and it is a small jaunt up the hill. It isn't a difficult one to climb at all, but it isn't on the main boardwalk area. We checked into the hotel very easily and luckily our room was available. We could have checked our un-needed luggage if we wanted to. This hotel is giving excellent rates right now until they are more established. We ended up staying in the full ocean view room which was great! The room itself was very small but sufficient. It had a very small balcony (no chairs/table--too small), a VERY small bathroom (knees almost hit the wall when using the toilet)...but the restroom was definitely fine. The shower was a standing shower (no soaking tub). The bed was a Tempurpedic and it was comfortable. We had read reviews about other hotels saying that the heater/A/C didn't work...ours did...it was fine. No iron/ironing board-but a steamer was provided (didn't use it). Everything about this hotel was extremely modern and new. The front desk people were very nice too. They offered continental breakfast in the hotel until I believe 10:30a. We didn't try it b/c we went to the "Busy Bee Cafe" which was great. It looked liked they had the basics...coffee, muffins... You could hear some vacuuming going on in the afternoon, but that is to be expected. They have a nice 3rd floor sun deck but we didn't spend any time out there. There is no jacuzzi/pool at this property. We checked out the Pavillion Lodge, Metropole and Avalon...they all have their +'s/-'s, but Iiked Aurora the best. We would stay here again.
