“Great Hotel, Plus Great Location”
Reviewed 5 September 2013

This hotel is right on the front street of Avalon, upstairs above the shops. Good beds, very cleans rooms, up-dated air conditioning units in the rooms and new windows. This hotel is in the best location. Just walk down the stairs and you are on the main street and beach! It's an older building, but this is Catalina, all the buildings are old. But very clean. Front desk guy was very helpful and professional. No complaints here. After Sept. 2, they have a great deal: 1/2 off the room rate.

Room Tip: Great Location, close to everything!!!

We stayed at the Hotel Mac Rae in June 2013. it was a very clean and friendly place. Cute little courtyard. We got there early and our room wasn't ready however, they allowed us to store our luggage so we could visit the island. The staff was very friendly. I recommend doing the semi-submersible trip, so many fish and our 8 yr old daughter loved it. If you are coffee drinker, like me, it was nice that a little shop called Lloyd s sales coffee for .50 all day (they have the best brownies too). We went to Antonio's for lunch and had their Italian sandwich, which was huge and great. I would have given the hotel a 5 however the water pressure and plumbing situation on the island is a little sub-par.

Hotel Mac Rae is a family-owned and operated simple, basic hotel right in the center of the Catalina waterfront. It's not expensive, but it will do for the budget traveler.

You do have to schlep luggage up one flight, so probably not for those who have bad knees. The staircase opens onto a little open courtyard with tables and comfy chairs for lounging about in the sun. People smoke out there, too, which wasn't a problem for me, since they were on the other end, but I wouldn't want them outside my door.

My room was small but clean and the bed was comfortable. Huge closet with a dresser in it in case you like to unpack. Night table, lamp, small chair, side table, small flat screen TV. Small bathroom with a stall shower, low water pressure nozzle like everywhere else in California (and especially on Catalina, where fresh water is in short supply). Free wifi is a bit slow, but not bad for free.

My windows opened onto the courtyard, which was a little noisy at times, but I wasn't in the room that often. The door on the stairway to the street is locked at 10 pm (you get a key), which is nice for security.

When I called for a reservation, the girl on the phone was short and almost rude. Good help is hard to find. The guy who checked me in was very nice and helpful.

Restaurants, the public dock for boat rentals and excursions, and shops are very close - within half a block.

Continental breakfast for free in the courtyard - coffee, rolls.

Room Tip: Ocean view rooms are noisier, thanks to the Catalina tourist zoo going on outside.

Stayed here for one night April 23rd for my wife's birthday. The hotel itself is more like a motel, but all hotels in the island are the same way. Don't expect any fancy 5 star here. Just not the place for it. The location of the hotel is right in the heart of the island. 5 minutes walking distance from the Catalina express port. The rooms are small but clean. The beds could be a little more comfy. Not much to do in this island at all. One day stay is perfect they have 2 Vons markets, a radio shock restaurants, bars, and bakeries/ coffee shops. The hotel is good. Service is good but wouldn't return to this island period. If you haven't been here, I suggest for one time visit just to say "hey, I've been to Catalina island". ; )

You know the room itself really wasn't that bad and sheets did seem clean. My issue was with shower. While in shower It sounded as though someone from either the room next door or the restaurant (galleon) flushed a toilet. And then some very disgusting foul water came out of my showerhead. My blood still boils when I think about it. I did complain to girl on checkout and strongly considered getting a lawyer. What stopped me is my love for the island.I was conceived on Catalina and have been going there my whole life.
There is nothing more beautiful then camping in "little harbor". In addition the residents of catalina are great people as well.

I loved this hotel! They are certainly the best deal in town. Their location is EXCEPTIONAL-literally ON the beach and attached to all the restaurants and shops you could want! Now, don't go expecting all modern and 4-star amenities-this is an old-fashioned, quirky little inn. The entrance looks like Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland, and the rooms are cute and quaint. The skylights in the bathroom are really cool. Everything was clean and lovely. They give you huge beach towels and DVDs...but plan on buying breakfast, as the one that's included is literally coffee and a plastic container of mini muffins :P But overall I highly recommend this hotel for its convenient location and old-town feel.

This is a "no frills" hotel in a great location that's easy on your wallet. The courtyard is very relaxing and the morning coffee is good. The only drawback is the stairs. A plus that not everyone cares about is the brightness of the bathroom-----great for applying makeup!!!

Room Tip: Try to get a room facing the ocean. A little more expensive, but the view is well worth it.
