“Home Away From Home!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 April 2013

My boyfriend surprised me for my birthday with a trip to Catalina this past weekend and he could not have chosen a better hotel. From the moment we showed up the staff was all smiles. I have never been to a hotel before where the person that checked you in, was also the person that walked you to your room and showed you where everything you could ever need, was located. They were beyond hospitable! We never had to lift a finger, from the restaurant reservations to island activities, the staff helped in any way they could. Between the hotel staff and the wonderful accommodations, you feel right at home. A complimentary continental breakfast was provided on a beautiful patio each morning. And there were also snacks and coffee available in the lobby at all times. (Oh and they have complimentary popcorn in the room! I am a popcorn lover to say the least, so I was stoked on this wonderful surprise) The hotel also has the best views of any on the island from the rooftop, especially for its incredibly convenient location. The great service, location and comfortable atmosphere is why we will come back to the Avalon Hotel during our next visit to Catalina Island. Thank you for making my birthday weekend special.

The Avalon Hotel is a craftsman style hotel on the side of the mountain that surrounds the harbor. The majority of the 4,000 year round inhabitants live on this tiny slice of the island. 100 or so live in an isolated harbor on the other side. It is a pricey little island to visit. The hotel's have the advantage on setting the price. Value and price are skewed because of their location. When I say that it is not a "good value" that is in comparison to an identical room on the mainland. It would not fetch the same price. It was a very good experience.

My main complaint was price. We traveled with our 3 teenagers. We had to reserve 2 rooms. We fortunate to have them beside us and they opened the balconies between us and made them adjoining. That was wonderful. The $1200 for 2 nights for 2 rooms was a big "ouch". I knew this going in. I accepted their price. That was a huge chunk of our 2 week vacation budget on just those few days. We were able to economize the rest of the trip by traveling in our motorhome.

For us, this trip was about memories. This could possibly be one of the last family vacations that we'll get to spend with our 3 kids together. College and careers will begin taking precedence over mom and dad's wishes.

We'd never been to Catalina and relied on the generally very positive Trip Advisor reviews to choose the Avalon. We were not disappointed. We had rooms 301 and 101. The higher room had beautiful water views and a wrap around balcony. My daughters loved the free snacks and drinks in the hotel lobby and room mini-fridges. The rooms were no bargain but the hotel showed flexibility by letting us have 301 for one night over the weekend, when the usual policy is a two-night minimum. The staff was very helpful and friendly, booking our ferry tickets in advance and giving us lots of advice, and on our last day letting us return to the hotel twice for outdoor showers and clothing changes as we went snorkeling after we'd checked out. Many thanks Laurie and staff for a welcoming Channel Islands weekend.

Room Tip: Higher floors will be quieter, and room 301 has great exposure and views over the water.

This hotel is very nice but not 5 star by any stretch of imagination. The rooms are average 3 star hotel room but when you add the view and the charm of location you can bring it up to a 4 star but no way this is a 5 star place. I have stayed in many small charming 5 star places in Mendecino county but this does not come close. I enjoyed my trip a great deal and from what I saw this is one of the best places on Catalina.

This small boutique hotel is a gem! The staff at the Avalon are superb, very friendly and helpful. The Avalon is a beautifully designed arts and crafts style hotel that offers lovely views of the harbor from many of the rooms balconies and also has a rooftop space with great views and comfortable seating to sunbathe or enjoy cocktails in the evening. The room was nicely appointed, cute as could be bathroom (spa products) and amenities galore! The room has a refrigerator and microwave along with complimentary beverages which we were happy to have. To add to the homey atmosphere, there is fruit and a basket full of snack choices available in the lobby. A nice complimentary breakfast is served in their courtyard where you can watch the hummingbirds feed and the fish swim in the pond.

Room Tip: We asked for the room with a larger balcony and awesome view of the water - room 301. It was worth...

We stayed for two nights and had a great time. The location is good. The rooms are comfortable with so many amenities. Comfy robes, spa products, water and snapple in the room refrigerator, beach towels, in room safe. Continental breakfast is in the courtyard and the rooftop patio offers great views of the harbor. An easy walk to anywhere in Avalon. Personalized service by everyone at the front desk. Stay here, you'll enjoy it. We had a king bed room with a balcony facing the street. There was no problem with evening noise in March.

Room Tip: You either face the street or the courtyard.

This hotel is amazing. The beds are extremely comfortable, the views are gorgeous, the staff is like family, and it's just steps from the shops and the ocean. If you're looking for somewhere to relax you need to stay here. Also, the bathtub with the bubbles & body scrub is to die for. Don't forget wine & cheese on Friday's! I'm enjoying it at this very moment!
