Four of us spent 2 nights in a tent cabin last week. Was very nice to not have to drag our own tents out to the island. Check in process was very easy & the rangers at the campground were kind and helpful during our entire stay.
Tent cabin was well maintained. Yes, there were cobwebs etc, but it's camping, what do you expect? Most of the cabins have a nice porch area which is great for hanging towels and swimsuits/dive gear to dry. We also had a nice picnic table and grill for our use. The rangers provided us with a stove & lantern. Cots seemed fairly new & were comfortable.
Bathrooms were well-maintained & clean. Showers have hot water, unlike most of the public beach showers on the island- if you forget quarters, they have change at the front desk.
Keep in mind the campground is quite a hike from Avalon - about 1.5 miles, I believe? The trolley is a good option for the trips up ($2 pp each way), but they won't let you on with really large bags or camping gear and their hours are limited. A taxi ride for 2 will cost about $13+tip from the heart of town to the campground. So yes, you're saving $ by not staying in a hotel, but keep in mind that if there are nights when you don't want to walk up the road, you'll be shelling out $ for a cab.
For those of you who want to keep your devices charged.. there are plenty of spots around town to charge. We found plugs in one of the Vons.. in a planter... just be resourceful & you'll be fine.
Keep in mind this isn't a particularly secluded campground.. all of the sites are fairly close together, but we knew that going into it & we had a great time at Hermit Gulch. Highly recommend it.
