My wife and I have stayed at the Inn on Mt. Ada each year since 1986 when we had the privilege of being married at the Inn. Each year we spend two or three day at the Inn for our anniversary, on occasion we will make other trips as well just to unwind. We know the Inn, we know the staff.

Most of the staff are long time employees who we know very well. Never during the past twenty-three years have we even know any of the staff to be rude or condescending. On the contrary, it is usually a guest that is rude to the staff, fortunately this is infrequent. As for Michael, that's another story. Michael is one of the kindest, friendly, most personable gentlemen I've known. Michael has been known to go out of his way to accomodate guests, even going so far as to pick up irresponsible guests who miss their scheduled boat from the mainland, after hours and on his own time, off the clock, no pay!

As for the cookies, I know for a fact that cookies and pastries are baked fresh each day, never have we seen "Chips Ahoy". The lunch is basic. Sandwichs, hamburgers, salads and great home made Mexican dishes each day. Free wine, Champagne, soft drinks, fresh fruit, coffee, tea, whatever one would desire. Breakfast is excellent and the staff will always accomodate guests with special needs. In the morning one is awakened by the scent of fresh brewed coffee and baked muffins that are put out on the buffett prior to breakfast.

Clearly, "jennaelisabeth" needs to go to San Ysidro Ranch where they have a gormet restaurant, nice rustic rooms and spend four times the money for the experience. For the money Mt. Ada is a much better value. Mt. Ada is a historic, one of a kind Inn that is well maintained, with an unmatched location. Its unfortunate that there are such miserable people in the world that do not see the real beauty of the Inn and the wonderful people who make the Inn so memorable.

We were fortunate to stay at the Inn on Mt. Ada the weekend of June 13, 2009. It truly was an amazing experience that we will never forget. We felt that we were invited guests in a warm home with life long friends from the moment Michael picked us up at the docks in Catalina. The staff took so much time in taking care of every detail that we were overwhelmed by their generousity. We only wished that we would have discovered the Inn years ago but now know that we will visit again. We stayed in the Bethany Glen room which had a view to die for and we loved having a balcony. The guests staying in the Grand Suite invited us up to their room one morning and because of the private balcony, that will be the suite we will book on our next trip. With that said, every room had charm and you couldn't go wrong no matter which room you pick, just leave the kids at home.

The Inn on Mt. Ada should be on every one's 'bucket list' and we will always cherish this memory.

This is not your average hotel experience, and if you are just looking for a room for the night, this is not the place. However, if you would like a unique experience, staying in a heritage home with only 6 rooms in total and free run of the very large house, your are in for a treat.
Meals, lunch and breakfast, were included in the tarrif, as was the use of a golf cart for the duration of the stay. This made it easy to get around and when the cost of these inclusions is considered, it's not as expensive as you'd think.
Views from the Inn, and the comfort of the rooms and the living areas of the house were superb.
Lounging around on the terraces was quiet, peaceful and private.
The meals were simple, but satisfying. This is not a fine dining establishment, but there was plenty on offer.
Drinks, beverages and snacks were also part of the tarrif. Try doing what we did, which was to make our own evening snacks from the pantry. You really do have free rein!
Overall, a wonderful experience.

i did not stay at this B and B overnight. i simply came here for lunch. here is an honest review: the actual grounds and the location and hotel itself is phenomenal. the views are breathtaking. thats the good. here's the bad: the food is incredibly bland and generic. you would think that such a beautiful place would take the time to invest in a good cook. its equivalent to eating an "old country buffet" or any type of fast food. the service is also very mediocre. the staff seems less than friendly and you cant help but feel like you are in someone's house who is annoyed at your presence rather than comfortable, warm, and welcome. i would recommend coming up for lunch just for the view, but don't come expecting a good meal or fine service. p.s. you need reservations and lunch is served strictly at 12 noon.

We recently returned from a trip to Catalina for our wedding anniversary and stayed at the Inn on Mt. Ada for a few days.

First the good...
- Beautiful location. The views are to die for. It feels like you are a world away from everyday life.
- Use of your own golf cart. That was so fun!
- Shuttle service to and from the harbor. Taxis on Catalina are a huge rip off so this was very nice.
- Food and alcohol are included in the price of the room. The food is very underwhelming for the price but still, it beats paying extra to eat out.

The bad...
- The service was awful! We paid a lot and expected to be treated well. The manager/inn keeper (Michael?) is just about as pretentious as can be. He will look down his nose at you as if he owned the place. Ummm, I'm pretty sure your last name isn't Wrigley, sir. Lose the attitude.
- As previously mentioned, the food was really subpar. I enjoyed the $8 lunch I had in town more than the lunches I had at the Inn which they charge people $33 for. I the asked the waitress if it were possible for my salad to come out before the main entree, which seems like a fairly common/easy request to me. She looked at me, said "No" and walked off. Really? Just, "No"? Hmmm....

A few minor changes would make this place so much nicer! Change the faux flowers out for real flowers. Actually bake the "fresh-baked cookies" instead of placing Chips Ahoy out for everyone. Store the janitorial supplies out of plain sight. Maintain the grounds a bit better so we can enjoy some greenery, not weeds when we walk around the house. And most importantly, hire some service-oriented employees and you will have a real gem on your hands here. Until then, we will be staying in Hamilton Cove.

The Inn at Mt Ada is one of the most unique (and expensive) places we have ever stayed at, but forget the money - this is one of those places that you will remember and talk about the rest of your life. The Inn was actually built by the Wrigley family in the early 1920's. It has six rooms total for rent. Breakfast and lunch are provided and guest basically have a run of the place and kitchen including, beer, wine, soft drinks, snacks, etc. We stayed in the Windsor room which faced the harbor area of Catalina Island. Plus, guests have use of a golf car to get them around the island since there are few passenger cars (this is the way the whole world should be). This location and view is one of the best I have ever experienced. Plus we were there over the July 4th weekend, and the Inn is THE place to view the fireworks. We can highly recommend this property to anyone looking for something truly unique and memorable (forget the cost - you can't take it with you anyway)!

Everything else you read in these reviews is correct, so no sense in repeating it.

One nice thing is they have brand new golf carts. The golf cart is one thing that should not be overlooked. You really need it. Even though Avalon is small, the location of the Inn makes for quite a walk to get into town or to the Buffalo Nickel (see our review of this fantastic restaurant!). The unlimited use of the golf cart makes the price of your stay quite reasonable.

We were able to get a really good rate at the Inn by waiting 2 or 3 days before our stay to book. Check out their web site for details.

We peeked in almost all the rooms & found them to be very nice. However, in our opinion, the Bethany Glen, was the best! We were able to enjoy the balcony in the morning with a cup of coffee & watch the ships and the town start to wake up. The best view would be from the Windsor Room. While there's no balcony, with the tall bed, you could see right out into the ocean from it. No need to even get up!

The only thing that keeps us from rating the Inn as excellent is the food. Definitely second rate. While it was okay, it didn't live up to the quality of the Inn itself. You would think that for the price you pay, you would get top notch food. Some examples would be the "fresh baked" cookies that are put out. The first afternoon we were there, the cookies did appear to be fresh baked & were very good. The rest of the days, they were definitely store bought. Also the muffins that were put out in the morning before breakfast are not very good. The breakfasts & lunches were, at best, what you would get at a diner. If we had had to pay $25 and $33, respectively, as you do when you're a meal guest only, that would have been unacceptable. To their credit, they tried to make the food seem upscale, but it falls short. We've stayed at several B&Bs & the food has always been much, much better.

It would be nice if they would bring in a chef to create meals that complement the rest of the experience of the Inn & teach the kitchen staff how to prepare them.

All in all, we had a very nice stay. That, in part, due to the fantastic staff. (Make sure you leave them a nice tip!) :-)
