“The negative reviews are right!”
Reviewed 10 January 2012

Anyone who would provide a good review to this hotel just does not know how to travel!

I reserved a two-bedroom suite because my wife and I were traveling with our daughter and upon arrival were told that the "maid that was to clean the suite called in sick" so we had to take two separate rooms. They did not understand the problem with the concept of leaving a teenager in a room by herself. At 8 AM the next morning we heard loud banging from the rooms upstairs. A call to the front desk was met with the revelation that the upstairs rooms were "being renovated" and the "construction would continue 8 AM - 6 PM until April 2012." Considering the state of our rooms the hotel surely needed renovation but we should have been told that the noise in our room would not be tolerable during the day when we made the reservation a week before.

They could not even get the small things right. There was no toilet tissue , soap, or shampoo in the room although we did have triple the conditioner. The toilet in our room did not work properly (water did not shut off and ran day and night). When I kept asking for it to be fixed I was told they did not care because toilets on Catalina use salt water.

Again, seriously, anyone who would give this hotel a good rating is either a relative or friend of the owners or just does not know how to travel!

Room Tip: Try another hotel!

Our daughter's wedding guests stayed at the Glenmore. Without requesting it, on arrival we were met at the dock and our luggage was transported to the hotel. Early check in was friendly and efficient and our bags were taken to our rooms for us. All rooms were clean, charming, and comfortable. The free continental breakfast was a quick and tasty way to start the day. The staff could not have been more friendly and accommodating, and the owner is always available for anything that needs attention. This is an historic hotel with its own charming character that has aged well. We look forward to a return visit.
Joan and Tom Tenowich

Room Tip: We stayed in 317, a suite with a jacuzzi tub, a deck and a limited view of the ocean.

My girlfriend and I went to Catalina for a quick off-season getaway. After searching around on the internet, Glenmore turned out to be the best deal of all the available hotels in Avalon, but I still wound up spending over $140 after tax. That's reasonable for such a small resort town like Avalon, but for what this hotel is, that would be way too expensive anywhere else.
The overall hotel and room were clean, but small and seriously in need of maintenance and updating. The sheets were stained, and there was a hole in the wall from the door handle. The bed and mattress itself seemed old and beat, and was... let's say noisy. Sorry neighbors.
The positives were that the hotel was in a great location, the staff were very friendly, and the continental breakfast was a nice touch. Plus, since the ferries land much earlier than check-in time, there's a storage room available to drop your bags while you explore town. Although my review seems negative, we did have a nice time, and in order to save money would definitely consider returning.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 271, in the back, over the alley. We still heard a fair amount of noise from the s...

Our ferry was turned around today due to inclement weather. Thanks to Jack at the hotel, Expedia gave us a full refund. This is the kind of place where you can count on excellent service. Bravo!

We love the Glenmore Plaza. Despite what some of the negative reviews have to say, it really is a wonderful place to stay. What you have to understand is that it is very old--I believe it dates from the 1890's--and is family-run.

It is not corporate. If you're looking for the antiseptic charmlessness of a Holiday Inn, then the Glenmore Plaza is not for you and neither is any other hotel on the island. The rooms are European-small, there's no elevator, the floors are crooked, and bedding tends to get damp (you're on an island, after all).

That being said, we've found the Glenmore to be clean and quaint with a very helpful staff. Our stays have been quiet and fun, and reasonably priced when compared other hotels on the island. We can't wait to return!

Room Tip: Try the suites. Their Sundeck Suite--Room 317--sports a jacuzzi tub and a sun deck with a partial vi...

In almost 30 years of traveling, this is, without exaggeration the WORST hotel I have ever had the misfortune to select. Every negative review on this site is 100% accurate. The building can only be described as a slum. My wife and I checked in for a night’s stay in August, for which we paid almost $170.00.. My wife is disabled and, to her dismay, we found out that the building has no elevators (in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act), forcing us to trudge up several flights of rickety stairs. Unbelievably, they put us BOTH into a room that measured 8 x 12. There was just enough space for a small bed and a TV. It was stuffy, uncomfortable and claustrophobic. The carpeting was dirty and both the blanket and bedspread were stained. The room looked NOTHING like the bright, spacious rooms on the hotel’s website. The room overlooked an alleyway, just above a kitchen, and only had a very small window, providing no circulation and making the room hot and stuffy at all times. After just a few hours, we could no longer stand being in the room and, unable to secure alternate accommodations, left the island the same day we got there, having spent only four hours there. I subsequently sent a certified letter to the hotel, which was received and signed for, expressing my dissatisfaction and requesting a refund for the four hours we were there. Hotel management completely ignored my letter and never provided any response. Be warned: if you stay here, you’re either foolish or masochistic.

Room Tip: Look elsewhere
