“Under Construction, but nice”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 January 2014

We had been wanting to stay in the San Luis Obispo area for some time, but going in October was not the ideal time we had in mind. However, we had some vacation ownership points to use and there was availability, so we booked for late October and hoped for the best. What a surprise we were in for!

First off, the resort was under construction, so we expected chaos. Much to Diamond Resorts credit, the rubble was kept at a minimum never affected our stay. The rooms was on the 4th floor of the Northeast wing, which is a little cumbersome to get to, but the view to the Southwest was worth the extra trek to the room.

The kitchen was functional but not spectacular. We were able to cook some meals there and that saved on going out all the time, nice if you are trying to save on dining expenses. There are grocery stores within a short drive for supplies.

The living room was again basic but not run down. Sometimes plain furniture can also be cheap, but that did not seem the case. The bedroom furniture kept the same understated motif but was comfortable.

The best part of the trip was the surprise of all the things going on in the area. Farmer's Market, Pumpkin Patches, Fairs, Concerts and more made for an eventful and very enjoyable week. I would strongly recommend going at this time of year - maybe even a week or two sooner to catch more apple harvests - and go out and enjoy the fun community things the area has to offer.

I also definitely recommend the San Luis Bay Inn. It was close to wine country, SLO, sea otters at Morro Bay, Pismo Beach and a host of other dining and shopping experiences. Not flashy, but comfortable - we will most certainly return.

Room Tip: Ask for the 4th floor overlooking the bay - a lttle bit of a walk - but worth it.

We stayed there for the Thanksgiving weekend and had a great time. We were given a room with a partial ocean view (with a roof right in front,) not as great as the ones that have the open views; however, it is still good and I am not complaining.

We entered the room and got a phone call from the front desk to make sure that everything was good. When I was cooking, we found that a screw came out of dish washer and it was not closing. We called the front desk and the guy came in no time and fixed it. Then the front desk called in five minutes to make sure that it was fixed.

The place is spotless and the furniture looks brand new. The outdoor Jacuzzi was great, except the 2nd day, the water was lube warm. The gym was under the re-modeling so we did not get to use it, but it is right by the pool with a nice view.

Every Saturday, they have a fancy free continental breakfast with abundant of pastries, fruits, and other items. The scones are the best ;). During the breakfast, they give information about the massages and workout programs that they have, but no timeshare sales pitch. They used to have the raffles for little prizes, but not anymore :(.

Right down the road, there's the beach with the board walk and pier. Great place to spend an afternoon there. A couple exits down the highway, there's San Luis Obispo, where full of shops and restaurants. There's also a trail right by the Mission for a short walk.

As I said earlier, we were treated like royalties. It truly feels like staying in a palace there. I would love to go back there for every chance that I have. :)

Through Diamond Resorts, I booked a 2 BR unit (1 bedroom and a studio lockoff suite) for my mother and I for 4 wonderful nights Nov 30-Dec 4. I was given the corner unit on the end of the building with full ocean frontage views from every window and door. Amazing sunsets, quiet evenings, soooo peaceful. To say we loved it is an understatement. Although the unit has not been updated yet, the decor was far down the list of priorities. Everything here is top quality, from the soaps and shampoos to the treatment by the staff and concierge. I did take the presentation tour and actually learned things I had not known so I had no problems with it. Low to no pressure here. The beach town of Avila is clean and fun and quiet this time of year, but the weather was gorgeous and we were out in shirt sleeves each day. Great time at a beautiful place.

Room Tip: Corner suites are to die for

Just completed a week's stay here and can not think of enough great things to say! The hotel and grounds were beautiful, relaxing and just plain awesome! We only had a studio so I was apprehensive..to no avail! The room was big, complete and had a full kitchen with an oven! very nicely done and just what the "doctor" ordered! ( thank you!)

After more than 4 dozen visits, this has become our 2nd home. it is Hawaii without the airfare, It is Laguna with the growth potential if its heyday during the 1940's, and it is the most incredible value of any ocean-front resort on the entire west coast. Only problem, it has become so popular that you must book more than a year in advance. Also - love the management and staff.

As we had a timeshare here for a full week, we had a fabulous room on the 5th floor. It is off season so very relaxing and still beautiful. We loved that fact that there was not much going on, we can get excitement elsewhere. Be sure to go to Hearst Castle! A very interesting place, with Zebra mingling with the Cattle. The beds were extremely comfortable and the room (a one bedroom) was plenty big. We also drove to Santa Barbara and up to Monterey Bay and Carmel, but that is what we love to do, very doable drive.
Everyone at the site were very friendly and helpful. but be prepared for the Timeshare Push. 90 minutes turns into 2 hours of talk and hard sell at the end, even though we already had a timeshare there! If you can get out of it, do.

The hotel location is great. Beach front, great views, walk to Avila beach shops and restaurants. As for the hotel it seems a little dated to us, the concierge said the pool area had been recently remodeled but they must have taken a page from the seventies because it was pretty basic. Additionally the two elevators are pathetically too small for this property. The rooms were nice with kitchenette and all the amenities you would expect for a $200.00 room. My one word of advice is to stay far away from the concierge, they are basically uninterested in anything other than you dropping a large bag of cash on them via a time share. After we spent considerable time trying to book a wine tour(unsuccessfully). They became unhelpful when I didn't want to spend my afternoon with them listening to a sales pitch. The Whish spa was nice we booked a couple of massages and they took us same day. Overall the property is worth a stay.
