Avila Beach is a sweet spot. My husband and I stayed at the San Luis Bay Inn in Avila Beach, CA with our two daughters (ages 10 & 5) for 4 nights at the end of March 2010. We were staying on a Diamond Resort's Sampler Package which required us to do the timeshare presentation (plan for 2 hours and note that the childcare facility is a tiny room with a few toys and dvd player - a long and confining wait for our girls). We were pleasantly surprised to have been assigned a 1 bedroom corner unit on the second floor with beautiful, easterly views of the hills, country club, and river, and expansive southerly views of the town, beach, pier, ocean and cliffs beyond. The unit had a balcony with an ocean view and was well laid out. It had the all the essentials, except for lacking an in-room washer/dryer. The coin-operated laundry facilities were subpar and located on another floor. There were too few machines, one was jammed, and the front desk did not have enough quarters to allow us to finish our laundry at the end of our stay. Of course we didn't let this ruin our stay. The king size bed was very comfortable, the sleeper sofa acceptable, and the bathroom was spacious and had a large, jetted tub. Our room was quiet at night and we all slept very well. There was a TV in both the bedroom and living room, but only one dvd player in the living room ($3 movies for rent in lobby). It would have been nice to have a dvd player in the bedroom to watch movies after the kids went to sleep. The kitchen had everything we needed to prepare meals (we shopped at the Trader Joes in Arroyo Grande just a few miles south and at the farmer's roadside market in Avila). Maintenance responded promptly to fix our broken disposal and to unlock the bathroom door when our daughter had accidently locked it. We enjoyed the pool, hot tub, and the game room. The resort could definitely use a restaurant onsite. The friendliness and service level of the resort staff could definitely be improved with the exception of the maintenance staff. A big positive is Whish Day Spa (onsite). Roxanna Clark, the owner, does an amazing job of creating a sublimly tranquil environment tucked inside a busy resort, while offering reasonably priced treatments tailored to her client's desires. After a body polish, massage with reflexology and pedicure ($165 total) I floated out the door to enjoy the rest of the day. The town of Avila is just a short walk down the hill and across the bridge. On an early morning walk I practically had the town, beach and pier to myself. Avila is small, clean and quaint with cute shops, ice cream parlors, 4 different winery tasting rooms, and dining options (we enjoyed eating at The Custom House). The Olde Port Inn at the end of the road on the fishing pier wasn't much to look at but had a good selection of fresh fish and see through tables to view the water below. Our daughters loved seeing the enormous seals that came right up to the pier beside the restaurant. The location of the Inn was great for exploring the surrounding area too. Hearst Castle was amazing. Tour #1 kept even our 5 year old interested. Don't miss the large screen movie (45 minutes) at the visitor's center, which is included in the price. 4 miles north on the coast is a viewing area of hundreds of elephant seals. Harmony (population 18) is a cute town to stop in for pottery and glass blown items. Don't miss the tiny chapel in the back. We also saw the Mission in historic downtown San Luis Obispo and enjoyed the many shops. All in all we had a wonderful stay and now feel like we're in on a sweet little secret that is Avila Beach.
