“Room was great, relaxing, nice decor”
Reviewed 6 July 2007

We enjoyed our stay here. Decor of the property and rooms are very "bungalow", which is unique to us at least.
My husband and I attended college nearby and were looking for something different. We didn't need an ocean view or to be near SLO attractions.
Our room was spacious, clean, comfortable, and felt new. The staff was pleasant and accomodating. We had a nice weekend away from the kids and slept in two days in a row.
Only complaint, the "granola" delivered to our room for breakfast was actually broken up granola bars, the oats n' honey green wrapper bars you buy at any grocery store. That was a bit weird and cheesy.
In all, we'd stay there again.

  • Liked — decor, comfortable bed, quiet, spacious
  • Disliked — the "granola".

My fiance and I stayed at the Inn midweek the first week of April. I had called in advance to inquire about the different rooms such as the deluxe creekside 2cd story, or the deluxe 1st story. The lady I spoke with told me the creekside rooms were much nicer with a great view and I wouldn't be disappointed. Trusting the hotel, as I was speaking with them directly, I booked the creekside room. Well, upon arrival and going up to our room, I told my fiance not to unpack as there was not a creek to view out our balcony, but a jogging path and kids jungle gym, and we must have gotten the wrong room. The front desk informed that we indeed had the right room, but the creek had dried up some time ago..... Sooooo, with this logic, I asked could you also advertise an ocean view, but tell the guest when they get here that buildings and trees have grown and you can no longer see it? Driving 4 hours to get there and finding a non-existent creekside room didn't make me happy. And, the rooms below on the first floor were identical, but less money as they were not titled "2cd story creekside". I wrote the hotel an email when I arrived home and mentioned these same concerns, but after 2 weeks I have yet to hear back. I am not surprised......

This hotel is a great value. Hot tub and fireplace make it extra special. The rate is the best around for a property with those amenities. I've searched every property in the area looking for a romantic get-a-way that was nice and not over-priced. You'll find it here.

  • Liked — The huge bathroom, fireplace and hot tub.
  • Disliked — That it's getting hard to find availability there these days!

We stayed at the Avila Village Inn for the Christmas weekend in 2006. We got a normal room. The room cost us about $185 after a Costco discount ($206 originally).

Here is our 2 cents:

The plus points:
+ The king sized bed was very comfy.
+ Convenient Jacuzzi on balcony (unless you opt for a room with a delux bathtub instead)
+ Huge glass shower stall
+ Free DVDs to borrow from front desk (about 30 to choose from)
+ 70+ channels of cable to choose from
+ AC / Heater in room
+ Fast gas fire place : warms up quickly and a romantic look at just the flip of a switch
+ Bike rental (beach cruisers with baskets and all) available for rent at $8 first hour and $4 / 30 min after that; There is an easy paved wide road for bikers, walkers only for 1.5 miles to the beach. You get helmets and bike locks to borrow as well.
+ Mini-fridge and coffee maker in room.
+ Coffee / Biscotti in rooms on weekend mornings. We got it in the lobby as well -- maybe because it was Christmas.
+ Only 30 rooms at the site, so housekeeping and front desk services were really prompt. They were all very nice and friendly.
+ Wonderful little lobby - small, cozy, large fireplace, Christmas lights, etc.

The minus points:
- No microwave in room (though there is a fridge and a wet bar sink)
- The room, although big enough for the two of us, was smaller than the pictures on the web site made it out to be
- Although we took a 2nd floor room, it would be bad for the people on the 1st floor, because when the water from the jacuzzi overflows, it run over and down into the 1st floor balconies. i.e. Definitely opt for a 2nd floor room if possible.

Genearl minus points:
- San Luis Obispo / Avilla Beach was a nice quite choice. However, due to the Christmas weekend many of the things were closed (wine tasting, many restaurants / shops, etc.) So - if you are going on a Holiday weekend ... call ahead to find out if the things you are interested in are really going to be open.

However, the beach was nice. Small - but nice. Fair warning, the pier is fine to walk on in sneakers, but the gaps between the boards will make it really really really difficult to walk in heels.

Good Luck - enjoy your stay wherever you go!

  • Liked — Cozy little Inn appeal
  • Disliked — Not much to do around the area (small beach and wine country, but shops and wine tasting were closed for the holiday weekend - so the place was pretty dead outside of the hotel itself.
  • Tips/Secrets — Take a second floor room; Make sure stuff is open in the area; Use your Costco Membership for a great discount

My wife and I stayed at the Avila Village Inn on a short weekend coast/winery trip. After considering a number of late notice options this turned out to be a good choice (on the way there we noticed that the Madonna Inn is right on 101 ;( ). The room itself was definitely above average, and even though we were on the ground floor afforded a good amount of privacy. In fact, the decor constantly gave us ideas for our own home during our short stay.

The light complimentary breakfast is a nice touch - if you are expecting a large breakfast you will be disappointed, but remember that your options at other locations are either a) nothing, or b) $20 per person. Staff were pleasant on checkin/checkout, but we're typically not too needy so we rarely have staff-related issues.

Finally, if you are looking for a good central location this works well. The Inn is about 2 miles from 101, and within easy reach of Morro Bay, Pismo Beach/SOL and the northern reaches of Santa Barbara wine country. We'd probably stay there again.

  • Liked — room, staff
  • Disliked — 1st floor hot-tub not quite private enough
  • Tips/Secrets — get a 2nd floor room if you can

Drove up on Friday, June 23, the day after getting married in Redlands.
We loved the Craftsman influence on the room decoration, with the matching oak furniture and light fixtures. The king-sized bed and large bathroom with double sinks and a huge sitdown shower added to our comfort. The jacuzzi on the deck, although not totally private, was used several times a day. Although an on-site restaurant would be nice, the Village Deli a few steps away had nice picnic-like food and a big selection of beer and wine. The continental breakfast on the weekends was a great way to start the day.
Found the service to be excellent and the staff was helpful to us. This is now our place to stay in the Central Coast area.

We couldn't wait to escape for the weekend for some R&R, unfortunately this new inn was such a disappointment!
The facility and room is clean, new, very nice!
The staff is terrible. There is simply NO service. The front desk folks were bad news, from misinformation to no information to unkind! (3 different ladies all inexperienced and have no clue how to help a customer.)
We were unable to sleep due to the noise heard from above (walking, flushing, talking, splashing)
We awoke early to view the continuous waterfall flowing down from above onto our patio. (front desk said, "it must be the folks above splashing in their jacuzzi."
Totally unexpected was the noise, behind the creek from the cars!!!
If you're inclinced to visit...don't expect service, stay downstairs, don't expect a quiet stay and don't expect food...which is no where on the property.
