It is right in town and has to be skied, if you go to Aspen. I prefer Snowmass, but Ajax was my first skiing experience out west, and I will never forget it.

“Favorite Mountain for All Seasons”
Reviewed 12 July 2014

Your heart leaps just a little bit every time you round Kleenex Corner as you ski down Ajax Mountain. That first view of the town of Aspen is a wonder. A perfect mini-city located far from the madding crowd. The mountain itself is thought of as a difficult mountain. There are no green runs. But the blue runs are not that difficult nor are they long. Sure, the run all the way into town can be draining whether it is Copper, Spar Gulch, or Ruthies, but this is an active sport! Of course, the blacks and double blacks are challenging, but you can have a wonderful day without killing yourself.

The dining is wonderful atop Ajax. If all ski resort restaurants were as good as the Sundeck, we'd all never leave the mountain. Ajax Tavern at the base of the mountain is hip and delicious.

TIP: Eat early or late as the Sundeck gets crowded. Skip Bonnie's as it is older and not so inviting. If you want to dine at Ajax Tavern, make a reservation on Open Table.

TIP: Depending on the weather, you may want to do top to bottom runs at the start or just stay at the top until later in the day. Ask a local. They are all friendly.

“Not for the faint hearted”

Ajax is super fun. The original mountain at Aspen. Would not advise it if you are a beginner. I am intermediate level and there were definitely runs I would never attempt. Otherwise, challenging and great, great fun!

“It's worth the hike”
Reviewed 6 July 2014

This is our fourth time hiking to the top of Ajax aka Aspen Mountain. I did the hike with my two kids ages 8 and 10 and we've done it before when they were 6 and 8. This is definitely a difficult hike for those not in shape or not used to the elevation like us, but it can be done. It took us 3 hours to get to the top. We started on the Ute Trail, which has a great overlook after about 45 minutes climbing. If you hike to the top you can take the gondola down for free. There's a beautiful restaurant at the top and has something for everyone. They have a lot of fun climbing structures for kids, frisbee golf, and a bungee jumping thing. In the restaurant they have ping pong tables and board games, all of these being free of charge. ACES offers free guided hikes from the top. We've never done it but I've heard they're great.

“Incredible Views”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

Took the gondola ride with family to the top of Aspen Mountain. Some of my children are too inexperienced to ski Aspen, but we wanted to see the mountain anyway. We took plenty of pictures and ate lunch in the lodge. Everyone loved the views of the town below and the incredible mountains on all horizons. Worth the ticket price.
