“Worth the scramble”
Reviewed 14 June 2014

The Maroon Bells soar above you. Lake serene and clear. We napped on the grass before walking down. Rock slides make the trip a bit challenging. Glad we went for it.

“Fun but challenging hike”
Reviewed 8 June 2014

This really gets good once you leave the maroon bells lake area...nice mix of pines, aspens, and of course boulders! We hit snow about 2/3 of way to the lake and that proved fun and interesting. Lake is beautiful! Bring lunch or a snack

“Superb”
Reviewed 1 June 2014

The trailhead is at Maroon Lake which can be very crowded, go early if possible. This can be a nice day hike or the start of a longer backpacking trip. I've done both and either way can be very enjoyable. Spectacular scenery and that soul satisfying feeling of being in the Colo high country.
Pay attention to the warning plaque posted by the NPS at the trailhead and stay on or close to the trails.

“Nice moderate hike near the Maroon Bells”
Reviewed 24 May 2014

When at the Maroon Bells take the trail to the far end of the lake and follow the path to Crater Lake. Pick up sandwiches in Aspen (I'd recommend the Grateful Deli) and bring water for sure! Hike to Crater Lake and find a place for lunch with a great view of the Maroon Bells. Wear sturdy hiking boots as there are loose rocks along the trail. Enjoy!!

“Rocky trail, but a good morning workout! Peaceful area!”
Reviewed 30 December 2013

We started this hike around 8:30 am. We arrived at Maroon Bells around 8 am, so we would be able to drive up and park (you have to take a bus after 9). We paid a fee to enter the park that lasted a few days (maybe a week pass?). The hike to Crater a lake was moderate intensity for beginners. The trail starts out smoother, but becomes more rocky. The trail is also filled with many uphill stretches. Bring water and a snack for intake once you reach the top. No bathrooms up here, so be prepared. We discovered there is an area to camp up top (tents). Lots of backpackers. We were glad to have done this on a weekday and early, as the trail was a lot more busy on the way back and I can't imagine wanting to hike with so many people around on a busy weekend! Good views at top. The lake is small, but peaceful.
