A great hike! It would have been perfect if it did not rain.
Taking the shuttle is the best way to get there. The tram driver provides a good insight into the area.

We walked around Maroon Lake when we visited Maroon Bells. Easy walk and offered different views of Maroon Bells.

It takes a little effort to get there, and it is not as pristine and quiet as it used to be, what with all of the folks traipsing around talking about how they cannot get a cell phone signal and missing the sights, but it is worth it to walk a little farther and see the scenery. And go during the "mud season" when it is not quite the stampede of summer or the crush of early winter, and the leaves are changing color (or have already fallen, that's fine) and it is cooler and wetter. You won't be disappointed.

We drove to the ski resort area (parked there for free), bought a bus ticket there and then took a bus up to the area where the hike starts. I think you can drive up to that point, but only very early or very late in the day. It took us about two hours to hike up to Crater Lake. The trail is very rocky, so wear durable footwear. A lot of hikers (even young ones) had hiking sticks to steady themselves. I'm 53, and not that experienced (although in good shape), and I got along fine without the sticks. The trail is a bit narrow in some places, and you sometimes have to stand aside to let oncoming hikers pass. Didn't see any critters. Bugs weren't bad at all, even though it was misty. The views around the lake are well worth the hike, although it's hard to get a shot without someone else in it, since many are posing for their own pics.
