“A Different View”
Review of Smuggler Mountain

Smuggler Mountain
Reviewed 2 August 2013

I hiked up Smuggler after hiking Summer Road up Aspen Mountain and to Maroon Bells. This was an easier hike than Summer Road and more challenging than Maroon Bells. It is about 1.5 miles to the overlook, which provides a great view of Aspen. It is a different view and worth the energy. Also, I am a lover of dogs, and there were A LOT of dogs (without leashes) on the trail. This did not bother me, and the owners seemed very responsible. However, I know that some people may not like this. But, I am glad that I did it! It was a great view... a different view.

From what I can tell this was a dirt road up to a couple of old mines that have closed down. Actually only thing you can see of the mines is a few signs and the gravel piles. They have put an observation deck and bench up top so you can overlook Aspen and get a wonderful view. Like others, this is a tough climb if not use to it. You will see locals going up and down pretty quickly for a workout though. The road/trail is mostly exposed to the sun, not a lot of tree cover.
Once you get to the area where the observation deck is there is sign/map showing you other trails up on the mountain you can hike on that are more actual wooded trails and very peaceful.

We hiked up to Observation Point. We are from the Midwest. The hike is tough, very rocky and lots of locals running, biking and walking. The views of Aspen are very nice, but it is a very tough incline to walk. Bring water.

It's really just a long dusty road up a hill. It's great for some exercise & soak in the beautiful views of Aspen. There are much prettier hikes in the Aspen area, but not so close to town.
