“Breathtaking ... in more ways than one!”
Reviewed 15 June 2014

We had an incredible drive from Aspen and then over Independence Pass. This is one of our favorite Colorado mountain passes! If you are not used to mountain driving this can be a little scary one, but it is safe and well worth it. Just plan to drive slowly, take your time, and don't forget to pull over to let others pass.

Going up the mountain there's a nice stop and a short hike into the Independence ghost town that was fun. And, at the top (approx 12,000 ft) you can get out of the car and hike a short distance through beautiful Alpine tundra for some spectacular views. Restroom facilities are available at the top.

“If you are afraid of heights??????”
Reviewed 15 June 2014

The views through the pass are nothing less than spectacular, but the road is certainly a little scary and narrow and you'll encounter many cyclists along the way. If you are afraid of heights, you'll want to avoid a trip over this pass.

Stop and marvel at you elevation and imagine how it was to do this on a mule. Be sure to wear your sweater! Getting there is really what it is all about. The drive is fab.

“Amazing scenery..A must do!”
Reviewed 10 June 2014

A very scenic spectacular drive through mountains that were still covered in snow in June. The road is narrow in sections but safe, there are pull over places every now and then for views that are spectacular. It is a fun drive that you take slowly and enjoy the experience. Aspen at the other end is just as amazing.
