“Home away from HOME!”
Reviewed 10 July 2014

Coombs B&B was everything and more. The dining, the history,(regarding the house and local town) and the staff was very friendly, and charming! Staying at the Coombs B&B was a glimse into the past. The A/C was very welcoming after a day at the beach. The afternoon cookies, were just as delightful and tastsy. The room my daughter and I stayed in, was very welcoming and the bedding was surprisingly dressed in down feathered. The beach chairs, towels and bikes provided were also convenient. The woodwork throughtout the entire home will leave you speechless, and this was a trip that we will not soon froget! Anyone visting soon if you have the pleasure of meeting an employee named, Ms. Eseella consider yourself luckly she is truely a gem. She loves her job and gives a new meaning to hospitality.

Room Tip: If you are interested in a balcony, there are several rooms that would a accommodate your request.

We chose this beautiful, quaint inn in an area rich in history because we had never before visited this area of Florida, and we wanted our anniversary celebration to be special. It was indeed! The restoration work on the buildings is first rate, and the antique furnishings are lovely. We were a bit concerned when we realized no individual thermostat in room in summer weather, but this proved to be no problem. The breakfast each morning featured different and delicious items, and the hostesses worked hard to meet the needs of each guest. We appreciated the available beach chairs when we drove to St. George Island, and we saw several guests borrow the bikes for rides around town. We enjoyed the short walk to nearby shops and restaurants. While we thoroughly enjoyed our visit, we agreed it might not work for our extended family because of limited activities (other than beach related) available---especially for teen grandchildren.

Only two things marred our stay here. One was the cold air vent in the ceiling that poured cold air onto the foot of the bed. Yep, it was hot and humid and the cold air was otherwise welcome, but hitting you all night was uncomfortable and caused a migraine for my wife. The other was one of the clerks, the blonde (sorry she didn't speak much so I didn't catch her name), was decidedly unfriendly. She was just there to get the job done I guess.

The house itself was beautiful, and well maintained, despite it's 100+ year age. The walkway was gorgeous with huge, old southern oaks with limbs covered with resurrection ferns. The bed was clean and comfortable, as was the rest of the furniture. The little (18") TV was too small, and the programming was incorrect and analog. The bathroom was very nice with a great shower.

Breakfast was excellent, served in a spacious dining room with one large table and several smaller ones. Service too was excellent. Coffee was fair. To be fair about the coffee, this was the end of a six state tour of the southeast, and we didn't find coffee with body anywhere. In fact, we only saw one Starbucks on the whole trip and no other coffee drive through's. I'm guessing it's just too darn hot for hot drinks. Iced coffee anyone? Good business venture?

Room Tip: I would think all rooms in this beautiful old home would be good.

The estate is beautiful, breakfast was pretty good, friendly staff. Be forewarned that American currency is not accepted, even if the guest requests to pay in advance. I was informed that I would be required to go to the post office to purchase a money order if I chose not to pay on a card. I felt that arrangement was unacceptable. She was very cordial, and I know she was doing what she was instructed to do as an employee. Ultimately it was agreed to accept the cash after a good deal of discussion. I was informed it is due to concern for safety, therefore I was was worried about how secure it was for a mother/daughter to stay alone, one being fragile elderly. Otherwise, it was a pleasant visit.

Overall a nice stay. Inn is pretty and is surrounded by so much history. Hard not to love it. Prices are a bit high for what is offered in my opinion but I would go back again to visit.

Breakfast in the morning was always tasty. Ranging from French toast and sausage to various quiches and casseroles. Very quiet, you can sit outside or inside. Also baked goods, muffins, cereals...the usual.

The rooms are a bit noisy and our room was too hot at times. There was no thermostat in the room. We travel with fans for white noise so we managed.

We stayed in room 11, the honeymoon suite. Bathroom was spacious but not much room for clothes so don't bring much. Room 11 is in a separate house from the main Inn which I enjoyed as I'm sure it would have been much noisier in the main inn. I might recommend staying in a room in the 2nd floor because we often thought our upstairs neighbors were rearranging furniture from all the noise on the hardwood floors.

There is a beautiful cemetery across from the Inn that has tons of history in it. We enjoyed walking through it!

We traveled to Apalachicola as a weekend getaway. The town was a nice fishermans village with a few shops and great seafood! Overall our stay at Coombs in was average at best. This was our third B&B in three months. We had booked a King suite on Venere and they put us in a small room with just a shower the first night. Front desk said that a suite meant just a bathroom and bedroom, When we said that was not what we booked they could not move us since they were full. They did move us to a queen suite (king suite booked) the second night that had a big tub, but the refrigerator and ice bucket were in the bathroom about a foot off the ground. Needless to say we did not use the icebucket. King bed was very comfortable and the queen bed was well worn. The breakfast was a disappointing just above a continental breakfast but great breakfast staff. There was alot of unorginization and negative vibes from the afternoon staff and wine hour. The staff served the wine but when unavailable to serve where mad when the guests helped themselves. The pictures did represent the hotel well except most of the rooms were smaller than the most expensive rooms pictured. Be carefull booking on any other site as the suites may just be their normal rooms when you arrive. Also found out that the owner had recently sold the B&B and is now corporate owned within the last half a year. Probably will try other B&B's in the area when we go back.

Room Tip: Make sure to confirm the room that is reserved is the room booked. Most rooms are small with just s...

We truly enjoyed our stay in Apalachicola. The Coombs House was in walking distance to all the wonderful shops and restaurants in this historic artsy town. It was very clean and the service was excellent!
