“See the Apalachicola River up close and personal”

The Apalachicola Maritime Museum offers a variety of river tours that are interesting and are a wonderful way to get to see the estuary and its plants and animals. All the captains and mates are volunteers so your trip's success depends a lot on who is assigned to your cruise. We have done two trips, one with a friendly and well informed captain and one with a captain who wasn't well informed and a bit grouchy which made the trip less fun. However, we still highly recommend these trips, especially for newbies visiting the region for the first time. The Apalachicola River basin bursts at the seams with fish, turtles, alligators, birds, and other creatures. What they should offer is a nature cruise with an informed naturalist on board who can point out and name correctly the plants and animals spotted on the trip.

We went on the museum's sunset boat tour. It was nice to be on the water, and the price was good. The tour guide did a fairly good job of telling about the history and ecology of the river and Bay Area, but he pretty much recited what we had just read in the museum prior to embarking. The boat's captain did not behave very professionally, but he seemed like a nice person. If you're on a tight budget or schedule and trying to decide how to spend your cash or time in Apalach, skip the maritime museum's sunset boat tour.

Very friendly young man at the counter. Small museum but nicely laid out and informative. Cost was five dollars each which was appropriate. We were disappointed as they had no boat tours going, due to lack of sign-ups during the time of our visit. This was understandable though due to cost of gas to take two people on a three hour boat trip. We felt the museum was worth the time to visit.

A small museum where you can watch boats being built. The real treat was the antique and wooden boat show being held the weekend we were there. Always the 3rd Sat. In April.
Highly recommend it.

Wide array of maritime stuff from the past. You can also rent kayaks there to put in the river right behind the museum.
