“Fresh Oysters in a Classic Florida Oyster Restaurant”
Reviewed 14 May 2014

I recently ate at Boss Oyster House in Apalachicola, Florida and was highly impressed. From the classic riverside location to the Fresh Oysters, it would be hard to find better or fresher oysters than at Boss Oysters. I had parmesan, garlic covered grilled oysters and they were beyond great. The Key Lime Pie was also excellent. A must do in this cool old Florida place.

fototex,Thanks for visiting the Boss. We are excited about our restaurant. We have great plans for your oyster. This year we have developed our "oyster kitchen".We now have our wood show char grill broiler from Mesquite Texas. The purpose is the chargrilled oyster on the 1/2 shell cooked with butter and parmesan cheese over hickory or live oak embers. If you visit the Boss and we hope you do check out our "oyster kitchen". We got the fire going right next to our marina where we have our own oyster boats bring in the days catch of oysters. Our boats are refrigerated to chill your oyster from bay to belly. We are the only oyster bar in the oyster capital and the entire panhandle that has the state and federal license to bring your oyster by boat from chilled on the bay to chargrilled before your eyes. Back in the before regulation days the only ones who could surpass us in this presentation were the American Indians who ate the fire grilled oyster and placed the shells in mounds.I guess they didn't have butter and parmesan cheese. Next our oyster roast. 3 dozen fresh caught oysters broiled in the shell on the wood grill flavored with our natural wood broiler logs. We are happy here. We are excited here. Your oyster is our world. We are excited to have been named "Americas top thirteen oyster bars" Food And Wine magazine 2013. We are Oyster Town Oyster Republic. Come see us. “Not a place for a crowd”
Reviewed 14 May 2014

We spent Mother's day weekend at St. George Island and some of our crew wanted oysters. We went to Boss's on a recommendation from someone in our group and showed up with 10 people (6 adults and 4 kids). We were told that the manager changed the policy the weekend before and if we wanted to sit together we had to pay on one card and that they could only take separate cards if we sat separately. That doesn't work when you are on vacation with 2 couples not to mention that of course the kids would want to sit together. They said they had to do it this way for parties of 6 or more. The staff just gave us attitude and we did not feel welcome there at all so we went down the street and gave our business and several hundred dollars to the Owl Cafe who was more than happy to accomodate us and allow us to sit together.

Crystal G, Thanks for review. Your's is a legitimate complaint. If yours was a party of 10 with 3
couples and 4 children than that would have been only 3 checks. The waitress should have been more accommodating in any event and not ask that your party split up. All this of Mother's day weekend. Whoops we goofed Caroline and Larry owners

“Pass on this one!”
Reviewed 13 May 2014

OK, I will admit oysters are not my "thing." And, some of the combinations here for roasted oysters do sound kinda good. But, that being said, I thought I'd try my luck here on a recent rainy day when I didn't feel like driving very far from St. George Island where I was staying. The grouper chowder immediately caught my eye, as grouper is my favorite fish! Unfortunately, what showed up in an overpriced cup that came to my table wouldn't have even passed as a decent "loaded potato soup." If there was grouper in there, I sure didn't find it. Corn fritters were hot, fresh, and good. My dining companion was od'd on seafood and ordered a burger--yet another disappointment. I've had better burgers at Burger King & McD's. Service was not bad at all, but the food? Forget it. We'd have done better going to BK or Mickey D's! I realize oysters are supposedly the "stars" here, but in a town like Apalach one would expect they could do a decent job on seafood in general. Unfortunately, they don't.

SGI Gal I read your review. What's up with that. I pulled up your past reviews onTripadvisor. I noticed your review on Annapolis Maryland a beautiful seaside town home of the Annapolis Naval Air Station near and dear to my heart. Annapolis is an old timey town, in the fall home of the greatest boat show on the planet. You reviewed Pusser's Carribbean Grill a landmark. You gave 2 stars " not bad for breakfast ; very bad at dinner" You reviewed Carrol's a favorite of ours you gave it 2 stars, "brunch needs serious work". You reviewed Annapolis Marriott Waterfront a gorgeous historic hotel you gave it 2 stars "poor customer service for the price"Chicks and Ruth's delly" Clean friendly delicious you gave it 2 stars. Your review of the Boss Oyster is similar to these reviews in Annapolis. One thing I do agree with, I am proud that you won't be back. Larry owner

“Not the Boss!”
Reviewed 13 May 2014

My husband really wanted to eat here for lunch, mostly for the view. I was hesitant as oysters were on my list and having read another reviewer, not the Chesapeake Bay variety! The management is truthful and posted the oysters were from Virginia. Good thing, because anyone who has eaten Appalachicola oysters knows what they look like, let alone taste like. The hostess/waitress was clueless as to where to seat us and mind you there were many choices. She finally said "sorry, we have a new system here. I'll have to ask my manager where to seat you." The oysters were fine and my husband had a grouper basket. Not sure where the basket came into play as it was just food on a plate. We drove all the way from Carrabelle and the best thing about lunch was the ride. Disappointing!

Bunky,Thanks for stopping at the Boss Oyster. Thanks for your review. We learn by your input. Our bay is struggling with the worst oyster harvest since a hurricane in 1989 killed the oyster entirely. We have our own oyster boats and the best they can do is one 60 pound bag a day. This is in contrast with a ten bag a day harvest in the good days before this event. In order to operate our restaurant we have imported oysters from other regions. We are mandated by law and by our ethical sense to inform you of the source of the oysters we serve. Thanks for saying that management is truthful and posted the oysters were from Virginia You were offended by a new hostess who was "clueless" about where to seat you. We have new trainees in house at all times and I am proud that she said I need help, because I am not sure in this instance. Gotta let them get "their feet wet". I think that was a well meaning gesture by a person who is learning. I read further on your review and you said the oysters were fine. You complained that your husbands grouper basket was served on a plate not a basket. So you are disappointed with the Boss Oyster because we did not have Apalachicola oysters an event that is out of our hands and in the hands of a much higher BOSS. The honesty of a new employee that you describe as clueless and the fact that your husbands grouper "basket" was served on a plate seems to be the events that we can in fairness apologize for I am sorry for your bad experience personally I am proud for our forthrightness in each instance. With respect Larry and Caroline Maddren Still proud owners Your Oyster is our world

“They don't like bikers here!”
Reviewed 11 May 2014

We were down here for Thunder Beach and had never been to Apalachicola before. So we rode out there for a day trip. Its a pretty ride.So when we arrived to town. We rode around the side streets to find what we thought would be a hidden gem of places to eat. We walked in a were greeted. I did not feel welcomed, maybe because we were Harley Davidson owners! It was 4pm on a Saturday. We sat outside and was a pretty view. We ordered a dozen raw oyster's and split a Boss Po' Boy with shrimp. Our oysters were small in size and not a very good taste (Plus, overpriced). On our Po' Boy they left the shrimp tails with some shell on all of them. I had pick up every single shrimp and pull the tails and shell off each one (Really!!!!!). Our bun was awful, it has to be the cheapest quality of bread one could buy. Plus, our server (Ashley) was not very attentive for the whole time we were there. We also had a hard time leaving the place as a group of rude customers would not allow us to leave as they were just chatting amongst themselves and blocking the exit. My whole experience is a bunch of rude people work and dine here. Will have to think twice to come back to this place. Sorry for the bad review! This is how we felt!!!!
