“No Gucci oysters here. Just the good stuff.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 January 2014

When we're in the mood for some superlative oysters, we head to Apalachicola. We don't bother with the fancy schmancy oyster dishes down the street. We go where the locals go, and that's Papa Joe's. Now the Apalachicola oyster industry is hurting from the water issues with water in the local river being diverted upstream in Atlanta. So you're no longer guaranteed of getting your fill of succulent oysters. But, when they have them (be sure to check ahead of time), they're days fresher than even in Panama City. (Those come from Apalachicola too.) They're fatter, and moisture - like right off the boat. It doesn't get better.

I've seen people fly in from Columbus, GA and take back coolers full of those famous oysters. My son had them shipped to Texas for his wedding.

A couple of times I've been to Boss Oyster on Sunday when Papa Joe's is closed, and once they had no oysters, and both times charged way high prices for what they had. However, we've never been disappointed at Papa Joes. (Getting hungry thinking about them!)

“No frills place on the river”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 November 2013

My oysters were very good. Had a dozen raw and six of the ones baked with crabmeat and cheese. Yum. On the river so you can see the working boats come and go. Captain from boat tour recommended and we were pleased.

“Very disappointed!!!”

We rented a Harley in Panama City Beach and rode over to Papa Joe's to enjoy some fresh oysters! We asked to be seated out on the back porch area, it was kinda run down looking, but what the heck, we were here for fresh oysters, not the atmosphere! The waitress came to take our order, 2 plates of cheese baked oysters please, sorry no oysters, you're kidding right, nope, no oysters, there is a shortage! We went ahead and ordered a seafood platter it was okay, but not anything special! As we were leaving we saw a small handwritten paper that said no oysters on the half shell, but it was not very noticeable unless u were looking for it!

“Best Oysters in Apalachicola”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 November 2013

We have been enjoying bay oysters for years. This is where the locals go to get them. You will not be impressed by the out of the way location at the marina, the limited parking or the fish camp atmosphere but this is home style seafood at its best. You can have oysters prepared virtually anyway you want them. Ask to be seated on the porch which offers a great view of wild life and boats on the water. Service is friendly.
