“Turtleman's House has potential but falls short”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 January 2009

When we planned to take our two sons to belize to snorkel and fish,we saw the Tutlemans House site and thought it looked great!! Marine biologist and a funky shack over the water in a pristine, remote place. A World Heritage Site!! We knew it would be rough but we thought it would be charming. Web site said solar power and fan in shack; NEITHER. Bathroom is too rough, unattached toilet seat ,solar shower unusable and not maintained. Way too much money for all the lack of service, Loose floor boards, only partially screened. Half the time we carried our own water to the shack in plastic buckets. Beach absolutely covered in plastic garbage and depressing to walk down. The family was very nice but the place was far from the web site description. We did have fun there, but our two teenagers were begging to leave the whole time. This could be a cool place but the Turtleman needs to bring his place up a notch or two or make it a value price destination.

My husband & I stayed with the Turtleman in July for 3 nights. We had a great time. The snorkelling was great. We saw lots of fish, nurse sharks, squid, an eel and a manatee. We could jump off the porch of the house into the water and snorkel within swimming distance of the house. The house on the water was so relaxing. The food was wonderful. The turtleman spear-fished for our lunch and dinner some days. His wife made great fried jacks!

This is truly a once in a lifetime adventure opportunity. The Turtleman's House is literally a house on the water located in a pristine World Heritage Site. The hotel is run by a wonderful family with two young children. They provide meals at their on-land home and Greg (the Turtleman) is a marine biologist who knows all about the corals and fish that are literally underneath your room. A manatee lives only a few hundred meters away and we watched nurse sharks swim past the steps to our house.

This is THE place to stay if you are concerned about the environment and wanting an eco-friendy experience. The room does not have running water or electricity. There are nice lanterns provided and a wonderful solar powered shower and compostable toilet. If you are looking to live in the lap of luxury, I do not recommend staying here; however if you want a true experience than I can't think of a better spot in the world.
