My wife and I just got back from a trip to Belize and it was great. We stayed in San Pedro and visited the Maya ruins site of Lamanai with Tanisha Tours. Our guide was Daniel Nunez. Daniel picked us up at our hotel dock promptly at 7:00 AM. He has a very nice boat, and it was very comfortable for our trip to the mainland. We traveled by boat for a little over an hour to get to the mainland. There, we boarded an air-conditioned van and travel for about another hour. Then boarded another boat to continue by river to Lamanai.
Daniel has eyes like a hawk. For the entire trip, he was constantly pointing out wildlife and different types of flora and fauna. He could tell you the scientific name, common name and local name of many types of plants along with their medicinal uses and history with the Maya. We saw lots of wildlife on this tour. Alligators, spider monkeys, howler monkey, iguanas, bats, toucans, and many other types of birds. We even saw dolphins on the return trip to San Pedro.
Daniel’s knowledge of Lamanai was impressive. You can tell that he enjoys his job and is very thorough with his explanations of the various structures. It seemed like some of the other tours were being rushed along, but we took our time and really got to see the sights. Several times I noticed people from other tours paying attention to Daniel’s explanations and some even asked him questions.
We were well taken care of for the entire tour. They fed us a light breakfast on the boat ride over. We had a well catered lunch at the Lamanai site. Drinks were available throughout the day. You may want to bring something warm for the return trip. We were traveling into the wind on the return trip and as the sun began to set it was a bit chilly. I had brought a light long sleeve shirt in my backpack and this was all I needed to stay warm.
The return trip was quicker as we didn’t make many stops for wildlife. We were dropped off at our hotel dock at about 6:00 PM. This may seem like a long day, but we saw and did so much that we felt that the day just flew by. We had a great time and highly recommend Daniel and Tanisha Tours!

While in Belize, we decided upon Tanisha Eco Tours to go to the Mayan Ruins with b/c while most companies provide the same exact tours, Tanisha offered a much cheaper rate. However, we were EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED WITH THIS TOUR COMPANY! DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THEM!!!!

Elodia, who we booked our trip to Lamanai Ruins, was very helpful when we were in her office. However, the morning of our trip we were told to be out on the dock of our hotel at 6:45 to be picked up. THEY NEVER PICKED US UP. We figured they must be running late so we waited & waited, while all the other tour companies' boats passed us by. We tried calling several times but no one picked up the phone. So finally at 8:00 we were able to reach someone in the office, Elodia herself. First off, she mentioned she had been in the office since 5:00 that morning, (ha)! Second, she said she tried calling us several times & left a message for us in our office to see if we still wanted to go. (WHY WOULDN'T WE??!!)

When we checked with our office, nobody had called for us nor left a message. She proceded to tell us conflicting stories, first that since she couldn't reach us they left without us (which we had confirmed with her the very night before....), then she told us that the trip had been cancelled b/c the other people that were on the trip thought it was too rainy & rescheduled. FINE. So we asked her if we could go the following day, & she said & I QUOTE that "even if the group doesn't want to go, I will find you another group to go with, & I will call you at 4:30 this afternoon to let you know".

So that afternoon we walked by the office which was closed to see if the trip was posted on the door for tomorrow. It said "CONFIRMED LAMANAI TRIP TOMORROW". We were excited! We got back to our resort around 4pm & waited for her call. NOTHING. At 7pm that night we finally called her because she had not called our resort (surprise, surprise). She said the group cancelled & there were no trips going there tomorrow. Well great! Why did you post it on the door then? AND THANKS FOR CALLING US LIKE YOU SAID YOU WOULD!! That left us in a HUGE bind, because we had planned the original trip with plenty of time for other trips before we left, but now AFTER SHE GUARANTEED US WE WOULD HAVE A TRIP, we were looking at not having a trip at all for our last day & it being 7pm & impossible to find another trip on our own as all the tour shops were closed.

As you can see, this company treated us as if we were not important enough to them (although they charge $150 US a person for these trips so you tell me they are not making BANK), plus LIED TO US ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, not following through with a SINGLE WORD SHE SAID TO US. The trips we did get to do before this experience were INCREDIBLE, but if you care about actually getting to do trips while on your vacation, I WOULD RECOMMEND STAYING AWAY FROM THIS HORRIBLE COMPANY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We were picked up at our hotel dock by Daniel of Tanisha Tours for a full-day excursion to Lamanai Mayan Ruins. After an exhilirating speed boat ride over the crystal clear waters of the reef, the boat headed towards a bank of mangrove. Daniel expertly weaved the boat into a narrow river and immediately slowed the boat down and began to point out the various flora and fauna (the guy has incredible vision, or else he was making up a lot of what he said he was seeing!). For the next 20 minutes or so we were back in science class. We docked at Bomba Village where all of the overpriced woodwork is sold on San Pedro. Daniel suggested we'd have more time to shop on our way back. We then took a very bumpy bus ride through the mainland to ANOTHER boat which took us to the ruins at Lamanai. Daniel was very knowledgeable and passionate about what he was showing us. The guided experience was fantastic and he pointed out exotic flowers, colorful toucans, and made history come alive. Nearly dead from exhaustion climbing through the narrow pathways, we stopped for a nicely prepared lunch before beginning our journey back. By the time we got back in our boat the rum punch and Belikin beers came out and the long ride seemed a little bit shorter. The experience was tiring, but well worth it. Warning: If you don't have legs and stomach of steel, do not attempt to go up one of the steep temples! It's A LOT worse coming down! Daniel was great, and we found his fare less expensive than if we booked through our hotel (as they must take a commission and add a surcharge...it ended up being about 15% less. You'll really burn the calories on this one!

We used Tanisha Tours to visit Lamanai from Ambergris Caye. It is run by Danial Nunez who has a vast knowlege of flora, fauna and Mayan culture. Unlike many tours, which may last as short as 1/2 hr., our was 1 1/2 hrs.! We really learned a lot about the Mayans and Lamanai, especially the changes that the Mayans made to the city throughout the centuries that they lived there. On the way, we went by boat down 2 rivers & Danial has eyes like an eagle. He was even able to spot a baby crocodile sunning itself on a log. The little critter wasn't more than 8" long!! He knew all the birds and even where there was a nest of Maribou storks (huge!). The lunch was great, too. Tanisha will also custom-make most any inland tour that you might want & only uses the finest of guides. The prices are comperable (& sometimes cheaper) to other tour companies & you really get your money's worth! They have a website & Elodia, who runs the office, responds very quickly to emails.
