We are so glad we choose Cocotal! We had a fabulous time and Cocotal was the perfect spot for our vacation. Much of what I have to say mirrors the comments of other reviewers so I’ll put it in a list format for easier reading.

Pros:

-The staff, Raul, Ernesto, Calvin and the housekeepers do an excellent job of making you feel at home. If something needs to be taken care of they do it with a smile. The property is in excellent condition. They obviously take a lot of pride in running the place.
-The cabanas. We were in the newest one (too far back, more later) that is very nicely furnished. Bed was very comfy and there was plenty of closet/storage space. They have provided just about everything you need. The wood ceilings are great, AC works very well and the fans are there for when you don’t need the AC. Full kitchen is very handy.
-Location is very good if you want a little peace and quiet. We rode the bikes into town (along the beach) on several occasions
-Mara- A lot has been said about her, but it bears repeating. She’s about the best dog, ever (see photos). She just adopts you and makes you feel so at home. She took us to dinner at Capricorn and folks at another table thought we were locals since we had the dog. She’d hear us riding up on the bikes and run out to greet us and be so excited to see us. The owners really lucked out when they adopted her.
-Free use of bikes and kayaks- is a big plus and Calvin will take the kayaks out to the pier for you.
-Kayaking out to the buoy and snorkeling was great fun and convenient

Cons:
-The newest cabana is a little far back on the property and has more mosquito problems than some of the other areas of the property. The owner is considering building a couple more cabanas with one perhaps closer to the beach.
-A nice addition would be to have some sort of floor mat inside by the door to wipe your feet so there is not so much sand inside.
-Would be nice to have tours arranged through some additional vendors. Coral Divers tour was OK (Ismael, one of the guides, was great), but the tour could have been better. Searious Adventures had two boats break down on one trip. It may be that Cocotal uses these vendors as they will come out to the property, but might be good to investigate some other options.
-We never did get our “Welcome Drink” 

Tips:
-Mara likes Goldfish snack crackers
-The casita books up early and has the best location, however the kitchens in the cabanas are a little larger (ex. casita has a small fridge where cabanas have a full-size fridge)
-As with many European locations and the rest of the island, don’t flush paper, etc. down the toilet or it will plug.
-You will mostly take water taxis or ride bikes for transportation around the property and into town. The road is in very bad shape.
-The water taxis will pick you us at the pier next door (White Sands), but even if you have a reservation make sure to flag them down as they come near or they may pass you by.
-If you ride into town, but don’t want to ride back you can put the bike on the water taxi for an extra $5BZ
-If you are staying for more than 5 days or so consider getting a week long pass from Coastal Express (water taxi).
-The pool bar at the Grand Caribe (a 5-10 minute minute bike ride) has good food including fabulous ceviche.
-Ak’Bol (about a 5-10 minute bike ride) is great for breakfast (see photos)
-You can kayak out to a buoy in order to snorkel, but make sure you locate the buoy before you start out (or take binoculars in a watertight bag). The buoy is white and blends in with the tide off of the reef and can be difficult to locate.

This was our first trip to Belize. It won't be our last and it won't be our last tay at Cocotal!

We chose Cocotal based on the fantastic TripAdvisor reviews. Now I want to add my favorable review! We travelled to San Pedro in late October during hurricane season and lo and behold, when we arrived so did the threat of Hurricane Rena! We originally booked the casita, and was very happy there, however when it looked like Rena was heading our way, the staff quickly moved us to the 2nd floor of the main house. They made sure that our safety was their ultimate priority. The office manager Ernesto laid out what our options were and really put our worries at ease. The good news was that the hurricane went right past us and our wonderful vacation continued. The Casita and the main house were impectable. Everything you need is provided except for a blow dryer. Jesus, our driver at the airport took us to town to get groceries before we headed to Cocotal. The ride was bumpy but the conversation made the ride tolerable. We were there during the low season, so we practically had the resort and the beach to ourselves! We loved dining at Ak'bol for breakfast, Palapas for great hamburgers, and The Capricorn for dinner all within walking distance from Cocotal. We will definitely return to Cocotal!

We chose Cocotal for our Honeymoon destination this fall. We were worried about the weather in September but luckily received only occasional showers and no hurricanes. It was pouring when we arrived but our driver thankfully drove us to the grocery store on our ride from the airport. Although we had envisioned a lavish first meal, we cooked a not so glamorous meal of eggs and rice in our cabana. Lots of fun! Ernesto (the Property Manager) was very helpful booking trips but led us astray with restaurant recommendations for places that were closed in the off season (reason for only 4 stars). Think other reviews share this same complaint that there is not much to eat around Cocotol in the low season but we found a great place - Akbol - which was only a short bike ride away. Our 2 fishing/snorkeling trips and flight reservations coordinated by Ernesto were excellent. Bike path is right in front of the property along with the beach so you can get all the way into town in 20-30 minutes. The Cabanas were very clean and were recently built and thoughtfully decorated. Flat screen TV with good amount of channels was nice during rain storms. Big jug of bottled water and honor bar were also much used amenities. All in all a great experience at Cocotol - will definitely be back.

Room Tip: Stayed in Garden Cabana furthest away from beach, very quiet. Short walk to beach and nice sunsets o...

We stayed in the beach cabana - the place itself is fantastic. The cabana is about 40 feet from the ocean. Right behind the cabana is the pool (beware - the Jacuzzi doesn't work and it seems like this is a semi-permanent condition) Although the pool itself is nice and large.
We stayed there in late August. Unfortunately, almost everything around the Inn was closed so we had to go into town for dinner. There is a kitchen in the unit so if you prefer to cook yourself and want absolute solitude, this is the perfect place. The manager is new so he wasn't as helpful to us as the previous owners were to other reviewers. He was good, not great. The dog, Mara is absolutely awesome!
If you stay here you must kayak out to the reef and snorkel. The reef is amazing, and we're scuba divers so that's saying alot. This was the best experience of our trip.

Pros:
-beautiful property
-secluded
-very large cabana
-very affordable
-Mara is the perfect dog
- free kayak
- bikes are free but you cant take them out after 6
-clean rooms and grounds

Cons
-its desolate during the off-season and the price isn't lower to account for it
-WiFi only works next to the pool
-Its 2.5 miles into town on a rough road. $20 taxi ride each way!
-the manager could only book us on Oasis Adventures scuba - they weren't good, use Chuck & Robbie's instead
-no phone in the rooms, you have to depend on the office

Cocotal was spectactular. Our cabana was great. Full kitchen for cooking, great bed, nice bathroom and shower, a/c worked wonderfully (we went in September), etc etc. But better than that was the staff at Cocotal. Ernesto and his crew set up several excursions for us and really all we had to do was show up. The stress of figuring out what to do and when to do it was alleviated and we were allowed to enjoy our vacation. Close enough to town that you can ride a bike in for lunch or rent a golf cart for the day and see all of San Pedro with enough time to come back to the resort and lounge around under the umbrella, drink an ice cold Belikin from the honor bar and smoke a Cohiba cigar you picked up in town (can't get those in the states, you know). Mara, the pup who hangs out at the resort, followed us everywhere we went for dinner and gave us some good companionship away from our two dogs. It was an added charm. I don't know who owns her, but she was there everyday. Cocotal is close enough to town but far enough away from everything which allows you to peacefully enjoy yourselves and your time away from reality. We will be back and we will be staying at Cocotal. Take my advice. If you're still reading this, save yourself some time and stop looking. Contact Ernesto and book your vacation. It'll make you feel better and you can get to worrying about more important things, like what are you going to do while you're there.

My husband and I went to Belize on our honeymoon. Our communication with Tanya and the rest of her staff made booking the trip and all excursions easy as pie. We loved our casita and would probably request that when we returned but we also stayed in the beach cabana. Both are lovely but we really enjoyed the casita.
They lend you bikes and kayaks and we took full advantage of that almost everyday. Cocotal is not located in San Pedro so a nice bike ride is required to get into town. Take the beach road...it's much cooler. Kayaking to the reef without a guide is perfect and low key. All in all Cocotal was perfect for us. It wasn't a resort but we always got what we needed and when...even when food poisoning struck. The food at Capricorn did not agree with me but we had numerous amazing meals at Ak'bol, the yoga retreat down the beach. It is the BEST food.

Thank you to Tanya and the whole gang....we have recommended Cocotal to other families and friends and hope to see you all again.

Just returned from a wonderful stay at Cocotal Inn and Cabanas on Ambergris Caye, Belize—Absolutely DEVINE!
If you’re looking for tropical perfection- this is it! Beautiful, peaceful, off the beaten path, friendly, and fastidiously clean- Cocotal can’t be beat! Easy pick-up including a stop at the grocery store for provisions, then on up to my charming beach Casita (#1). The entire Property is delightful and flawlessly cared for. The perfect spot to decompress, swim, explore, and escape from your worries! Had a wonderful time kayaking out to the reef for snorkeling- a great way to go- on your own time and at your own pace. Heavenly location for photography! Excellent sights and great restaurants within walking distance—don’t miss Ak’Bol for a fabulous breakfast anytime (a short walk south down the beach). If you don’t feel like dining out- the fully equipped kitchens allow you to prepare your own meals, relax on your lanai, take in the gorgeous view, and soak up the peace and quiet. San Pedro is just a quick water taxi ride away for a stroll through the colorful town, or if you crave the “night life”. Ernesto in the office is extremely knowledgeable and organized- the man in the know, he can help you with any activities you may have in mind. Raul and the rest of the staff are indispensable—always a smile, and happy to share local information and history. Cocotal stands out from countless other places because of this: It is clear that the wonderful Staff truly care about, take pride in, and cherish Cocotal- it is a family that you are welcomed into with open arms. And Mara oversees the whole operation with her own brand of laid-back canine camaraderie! I have no question I’ll be back—Cocotal is a rare gem!

Room Tip: I stayed in casita 1, but the 2-level Main House, and the Garden Casitas are all delightful-- can...
