“Just what we needed”
Reviewed 17 September 2013

We stayed at Cocotal August 2013 and couldn't ask for a better experience! Wanted quiet, small, unique and comfortable accommodations and we found it at Cocotal. It was beautiful, convenient, and the staff were all so down to earth. We stayed in the one bedroom apartment with full kitchen on the bottom floor of the main house. It was perfectly situated right outside the pool, and just a few yards from the ocean. The resident dog Mara was so sweet and really watched out for us; greeting us every morning and walking us to the resturant down the beach for dinner nightly. We really miss her! Cocotal has a comfortable little outdoor honor bar with a grill and fully equiped kitchen that any resident can use. They have bikes and kayaks you can use free of charge, and of course they will set up tours or activities as you wish. We went fishing the second day after arrival and caught enough fish to cook all week! Yummy. The staff were all very nice and even helped us cook a special dinner on the grill with our catch of the day! Cocotal is central enough that you can walk either way a few yards to several different resturants and bars. We highly recommend the Cocotal Inn if you are like us and want more natural down to earth accomodations, top notch service and wonderful staff. FIVE STARS

We traveled to Belize over my 30th birthday this year. Unbeknownst to me, my fiancé had coordinated to surprise me with a birthday cake with the staff. When we arrived they had decorated the room with flowers, along with a card and the cake. This level of hospitality extended throughout our stay. I can’t say enough about our experience.

Room Tip: Stayed in the Beach Front Casita, great view and privacy.

My young lady and I became interested in Belize after seeing some vacation program on our local PBS station, and we decided to go. The only issue: I wanted to stay on Caye Caulker, a more rustic (for lack of a better word) island off the coast, and she was having none of it. We decided on Ambergris Caye (the country’s largest island). This is where we discovered Cocotal Inn & Cabana’s…and we never looked back.

Go look at their website…looks too good to be true right? Too clean, too perfect…no way this place is as nice as it says…well it is!

We went right at the end of the rainy season, taking a bet that the weather would hold, and for the most part it did. We took the beachfront casita, and it was glorious. Open those front doors and have your morning coffee as the local’s bike on the way to work. Get a sunny “good morning snuggle” from Mara (the TRUE owner of this establishment!), and let the day begin.

Bike riding, snorkeling & kayaking can all be done, and for free, right from the property.
If you’re looking for a quiet place, away from the crowds but close enough to join in if you’d like, I can’t think of a better place.

And the service: Right before we were to leave, a hurricane was bearing down on the island, and we decided to stay at the inn ( as opposed to the mainland in a shelter). The staff put us up in the much stronger two story building deeper in the complex, made sure we had all we needed in case of outages, and treated us like family. Thankfully the storm veered off.

I can’t imagine a better place to stay!

We just got back Marie and I from Belize/Ambergris Caye and we have enjoyed again every moment of our vacation we spend there. We arrived on July 20th and left on august 4th. This is the second year that we choose this destination and the second year we stayed at the Cocotal. Why the Cocotal ? For us; the Cocotal was perfect in every aspects. All the cabanas are extremely clean and has everything you need in it. It’s like a mini home…!!! We stayed in the red and orange cabanas last year and finally this year we had the beachfront casitas which was just like a little paradise ! Waking up in the morning and seeing the sea, feeling the breeze of the ocean on the front porch while taking our coffee was just something unbelievable. You just do not want those peaceful moments to end...!!!
Cocotal is located perfectly on the Island for the ones who are looking for something not too far from San Pedro where you can find pretty much anything you want but yet far enough so it is quiet and peaceful. It is only a 20-30 minutes bicycle ride along the beach to go to town. Most of the time you have a fresh wind from the sea so it is cooling you off a bit while riding. Please; do not expect much paved road or trails there since 90% are dirt roads and trails and I hope they'll keep it like this for as long as they can. The people at the Cocotal, such as most of the people on this Island, were extremely helpful and friendly. They have always gave us an outstanding customer service. Just as an example; this year during one evening in the beachfront casitas the air-conditioning stopped functioning. Since we have a hard time sleeping without air-conditioning when it is warm, Tanya, the owner, gladly offered us to sleep in the orange cabanas for one night. We were a little worry about how the air-conditioning was going to be fixed in the beachfront casitas since it was Saturday...!! The next morning Rambo went to San Pedro, bought new sensor and switch to the replace the ones broken and get it fixed quickly without affecting our vacation at all. A similar problem happened to us last year to us with a noisy refrigerator in the red cabana and the problem was also quickly fixed the next day by Raoul. Small little things like this makes the difference when people go over and beyond the expectations all the time.
Fishing: It is also very easy to catch some fresh fish (small snappers) under the dock with just a fishing line and a simple hook and bring it to some of the nearby restaurants such as Ak,bol or Aji or just even next door to the White Sand so they can have it cooked and served to us with rice & beans and some veggies for only $15blz dollar. What a nice experience...! Thanks to Calvin from The Cocotal for catching some sardines for us so we can use it as bait for fishing. Another day, we felt like drinking some fresh coconut water and of course we could go to town and buy it @ the grocery like we normally do back home but we have asked Calvin and Fernando and they have opened for us a few coconuts right from the trees so we can enjoy a fresh glass of it. Few things like this makes us really appreciated our stays at The Cocotal and, both time, they have exceeded our expectations ! Oh, I forgot to speak about diving...!!! We did 19 dives with the guys from the Belize Pro Dive Center in 15 days. We also took our Advance Open Water PADI certification with Ian the son of the owner of the dive shop. Those guys were fantastic. They were picking us up just from the White Sand dock next door and bringing us to multiple different dives sites which were all populated with extraordinary nice marine life living on or close to one of the nicest reef in the world. We saw all kinds of fishes, eagle spotted rays, nurse sharks, etc, etc, etc...! All those dive sites are just outside of the reef barrier which is never a very long boat ride.
The Cocotal offers also kayaks that you can take to go to the reef. With only your fins, mask and tuba; you'll see plenty of fishes and corrals.
Enough said; this was one more awesome vacation @ The Cocotal and we cannot wait to go back again !

I stayed three nights at Cocotal and honestly only have positive things to stay about this place.
The customer service is just so warm and professional - from Tanya the sweet and accommodating owner, to the pleasant and helpful staff. And yes, Mara the wonder dog who sat with me at sunrise while I read a book on the palapa at sunrise. I stayed in a garden cabana and was very pleased with how clean and spacious it was. No bugs and an icy cool AC were a huge plus. The pool was also very clean and a nice touch after a day out snorkeling...and I loved the 'honor' bar where you can grab beer, soda or rum punch. This is a quiet, calm place to stay a bit north of town, and slightly isolated so be aware of this. I was trying to avoid loud partying and looking for some serenity so this was perfect for my trip. There are plenty of hotels with restaurants/bars within walking distance on the beach so I didn't have any issues with not being in San Pedro. Ask Ernesto or Tanya about setting you up with some activities!

My husband and I have just got back from a 12 night stay in Belize where we spent the last week of our trip on Ambergris, staying at Cocotal. We were very impressed with our cabana which had every amenity we needed, including heavenly air conditioning! The location is excellent as it is on the much quieter and less developed (hopefully will stay that way!) North side of Ambergris. There are lots of choices to eat around the cabanas and it is a short cycle along the beach to the nearest supermarket should you need to stock up on provisions - although it is very helpful that the driver stops off at the shop on your transfer from the airport to the cabanas. The staff were great and made everything seem effortless. Cocotal is ideal for people who want to be close enough to the town but also enjoy a quieter, less resort-type place to stay. The use of free bikes and kayaks was great and found that we didn't need to rent golf carts that are otherwise very popular on the island. We didn't plan any of our excursions before we arrived and we found it very easy to book our boat trips although you might want to decide the company you want to book with first if not booking through Cocotal because there is a wealth of choice. We went through Cocotal for an excursion to Hol Chan, Shark Ray Alley and Caye Caulker and it was an excellent trip. We booked our dives independently - prices that we compared seemed to be similar to each other and we went with Amigos Del Mar who were excellent. We can't wait to go back!

I recently returned from my first trip to Belize/Ambergris Caye and it was amazing! I stayed at Cocotal Inn and Cabanas and had a fabulous time. The entire staff was extremely helpful, kind and very warm/friendly. The cabanas are very comfortable, beautifully designed and are a great value. The entire staff goes out of their way to make you feel at home and to ensure that you have everything you need to enjoy your vacation. The island is gorgeous and this side of the Caye is very peaceful and relaxing. It is not far from town and you can either take out a bike from the hotel property or take a water taxi from the dock next door, or rent a golf cart. There are plenty of restaurants along the beach that are within walking distance. Every meal was delicious, the portions were huge and the prices were reasonable. It takes a while at some places to get your meal, but that is because most of the food is made from scratch and I felt it was worth the wait. Plus, it gives you time to slow down and enjoy the moment and take in the beautiful atmosphere of the island. The manager, Ernesto, is very friendly and will help you with whatever it is that you need. I am very grateful for my time here and I definitely plan on returning.
