You could not find a better location than "The Phoenix"
if you enjoy being in the heart of San Pedro--"La Isla Bonita!"
It is just steps away to everything in this island town. There are several
small grocery stores close by (Caye Mart--good play on words), however, things
are not cheap, especially food. Our 1st trip to Caye Mart, we bought
several bags of chips, 4 small bottles of water, several cans of different
sodas, coffee mate, and a bag of plastic cups and spoons. Our total
was around $35.00 USD. Eating out was much less expensive for us!
And I'm on vacation anyway...no cooking!! LOL

We did take advantage of the golf carts for our entire trip to Ambergris Cayes. The Phoenix
took care of getting us a golf cart for our time there.
And golf carts are everywhere...
this is one of main ways of transportation on the island. We were able to go
up north and south of the island without any problems.
We enjoyed exploring the entire island,
however, of note, it can get bumpy in certain places.
And to our surprise, we had no problems with bugs/insects/mosquitos.
Maybe, August is a good time of the year! :))

The resort has a beautiful setting. I believe all the rooms face the Caribbean Sea, so you
can't go wrong with any room at this place. We stayed in the "C" building on the 2nd floor,
with wonderful views of the pools and the sea.

The staff will take care of any needs you might have. Just ask! While at the lap
pool, Abel, a pool attendant, noticed that we were sitting in the sun on the lounge
chairs, and walked over to asked if we'd like an "umbrella," which we gladly accepted.
It's the small things in life that make a difference...
and make a place stand out from all the others. And The Phoenix is one of them!

Everything, from the staff, the enormous rooms, the beautiful grounds, the sparking
3 pools, Red Ginger, was exceptional.
The only thing that The Phoenix did not have was a beach.
And this is to no fault of The Phoenix. There in not anything that they
could possibly alter/modify to allow a beach. However, our 9 year old daughter
would of loved digging in the sand and making sand castles.
The front staff did suggest severals places on the island for our little one
to frolic in the sand.
The staff did surprise our daughter with a tasty birthday cake (Black Forest--my favorite!),
during our stay there...she was thrilled!

Overall, I would recommend this resort to anyone. It is quiet and relaxing.
A wonderful place on Ambergris Cayes!!

I was told the Phoenix was the best and had high expectations - all of which were exceeded with my visit in August 2014. Beautiful weather, great view, amazing snorkeling and fight over the Blue Hole. The Phoenix was elegant and calm, the rooms beautiful and the staff claiming and friendly and very informative. Try the pina coladas while walking the beach staring at the stars and moon. The Blue Hole and reef are stunning from the plane and the snorkeling is like swimming in the best aquarium. It was peaceful and we enjoyed swimming with the local kids who were very helpful and friendly. Everyone spoke English and used USD dollars. Enjoyed talking with the honeymooners on the sunset sail and the ex-pats at the restaurants. The mahogany wood carvings and bowls are exceptional. When can I go back???

Room Tip: Al the rooms are great but you need to walk up the steps to be on the 3rd floor.

Yes, you read the headline correctly, this is the best hotel I've ever been to. In fairness, I don't do luxury hotels, but my wife knew of this one, and we went, and HOLY COW is it awesome.

The staff, first of all, is the best I've ever encountered. Super friendly, had answers for every question, could predict what you needed before you even inquired... they alone would make this an amazing hotel. BUT THERE'S MORE!

The rooms are incredible! Part of the new-fangled idea of buying a room/apartment/whatever and then the hotels rents it out when you're not using it, the rooms are huge, have laundry in them, have GIGANTIC bathrooms (their bathrooms are larger than most NYC apartments), comfy beds, large balconies... seriously, it's just tremendous! Plus the TV gets USA stations, particularly NYC stations, so I could keep up with the terrible weather of those back home!

It's location is perfect, right at the end of the heart of San Pedro town, and you can walk or take a golf cart to pretty much anywhere in the heart of town (or take the cart to those far away reaches on unpaved roads, though I was informed they were going to be paved... eventually). So many great restaurants are all right there.

The pool is nice, and you're right on the beach... sorta. See, in a weird twist of fate, you can't actually get into the water from the hotel. You have to walk to a nearby pier, which has stairs (and not pool stairs, I mean... wood stairs) that allows you to go in. It's not owned by The Phoenix, so use at your own risk, but I had no problems with it.

Anyway, my long-windedness aside, this is an amazing place, I can't recommend it enough... but I'd rather you not go there so I can be assured to get in next time I go back. :)

Excellent hotel. Lovely rooms and very helpful staff. Prime location. The restaurant is good but pity it's not on the ocean, but plenty others are. The diving is world class in the area and the staff helpful in organizing. The yoga also great. Don't miss caye caulker, a nearby island.

This hotel has the most comfortable apartments with full kitchen, 2 bedrooms, full kitchen, balconies and, contrary to the North of the island, in the Phoenix you will have a cool breeze all day and night long. The rooms were very clean and beautiful. Full A/C and very spacious. Great for families. The food and service was stellar and the pool was attended by two persons all day and afternoon. We always had towels ready to take to excursions as well as for the pool area. They never ran out of anything and we were a big group. Yoga, spa, great food and the people are so nice. Security guards walk and check around the premises during the night. There are palm trees so the staff got coconuts for us tu drink upon request @ $8.00.

Room Tip: Wifi everywhere.

We just returned from our 3rd trip to San Pedro, and our 3rd stay at the Phoenix. Going back this time, my family and I joked that they'd probably do *something* to give us the slightest pause that they deserve to be #1 ... I mean, they can't possibly be at the top of their game every single time, right? Surely they would drop the ball somewhere.
But, to our amazement, they didn't. Our trip this past week was every bit as wonderful as our 1st two had been. From the minute you arrive to your departure on your last day, they treat you like they are genuinely appreciative you booked with them, and grateful for your business. Never any problems with billing, room service and/or poolside service was always prompt and courteous, the facilities are top notch (from condos, to pool, to Sol Spa, to the onsite restaurant, Red Ginger), and the people are simply wonderful!!
On our 3rd day, we went out on a snuba trip to Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley. On the boat over, we chit chatted with some others who were on our same tour, who were staying at other places on the island. One couple talked about how their condo on the far north end of the island, while beautiful, was "totally lame." They said no one talks to each other or tries to get to know each other, and the staff acts like they are doing you some favor anytime you ask for something. They also didn't realize how much of an inconveniece it would be to get to town everytime they wanted to come in. We told them, "ya'll should come to the Phoenix! We feel like we've made new friends there! And it's central to everything!" The other couple was staying at a place on the far south side of the island, and said they were enjoying their stay but "wouldn't write home about it." I feel the exact opposite about the Phoenix! I want to write home about it all day long!
Stay here if you come to Ambergris Caye. You won't be disappointed!! There really IS a reason it's ranked #1 on the island.

Room Tip: We stayed in B2, which was a ground floor unit. This was the first time we have stayed on the groun...

Huge, spacious, well-appointed rooms; great pools; friendly staff; Caribbean views; and, great location. The Phoenix pretty much has it all. The only thing missing is a huge sandy beach, but we really didn’t miss the beach because everything else was so great. We stayed in a 2 bedroom unit on the third floor and couldn’t have been happier with our room. Everything was just as described by many of the previous reviews, and everything on the hotel website was 100% accurate. The resort is right in San Pedro, and we think the location was perfect. It was very quiet and private, but just out the door was downtown San Pedro. We found several good grocery stores and lots of great restaurants. The grocery stores are small, but you can definitely get everything that you need. Also, the small fruit stands were great for our daily supply of mangos. I also loved the tortilla factory down the street for a daily supply of fresh made tortillas. We really liked buying local stuff rather than just the U.S. brands. We used the free bike rental and sea kayak. The front desk arranges rental from local vendors, and it is very easy and convenient. The bikes allowed us to explore a large area. After riding quite far north, we are really glad that we chose to stay at the Phoenix rather than a resort farther north. A nice aspect of being in San Pedro is that there are many good restaurants in walking distance. We all found the restaurants to be excellent, and my kids really enjoyed trying some of the local cuisine like the beans and rice, coconut rice, fried plantains, and all of the fresh seafood options. We will definitely come back.

Room Tip: All of the rooms have sea view and nice balcony. Upper rooms are quiet with great view, but no elev...
