“Relaxing atmosphere and great people!”
Reviewed 10 January 2010

We stayed at Ak'bol for our honeymoon and after spending the previous week in the heart of San Pedro, Ak'bol was a nice change. Located north of the bridge, Ak'bol is very relaxing, secluded, and comfortable. Make sure to bring a flashlight if you wander around after sunset. We stayed in one of the beach cabanas and really enjoyed the view from our room (the french type doors open up to the outside). The team working at the bar and on the boat was great about everything!!! Make sure to ask for a fresh coconut from one of the palm trees. Ak'bol had more of a bed and breakfast feel than that of a resort. The owners made sure we had everything we needed during our stay. The only challenge related to staying here was that the restaurant/bar at Ak'bol closes at 5 p.m. and you have to find somewhere else to go for dinner. Luckily, we took advantage of this fact and tried a few different restaurants in the area. The Palapa Bar and Grill is a short walk down the beach and there are several nice resorts up north that will come and pick you up for dinner at their restaurant. Also, it is really easy to get to town from Ak'bol if you need. Just walk to the Palapa Bar and Grill and they will call the water taxi for you.

Overall, we loved Ak'bol and their family friendly atmosphere. We would definitely stay there again and would recommend it to our friends and family!

I am always on the lookout for tropical not expensive vacation that also offers yoga. You will fall in love with Akbol even if you ar not a yogi! I stayed in a lovely, beachfront thatched cabana with doors opening up to the ocean!
Each cabana has a big outdoor shower & even though it’s outdoors- it is still very private. Also the room has a purified water dispenser with a hot and a cold lever for your drinking needs. I loved the use of eco-friendly, natural materials to furnish & decorate the room. The attention to details here is astounding! If you are expecting AC, TV, private bathtub, room service, and coffee maker – this idyllic vacation getaway is not for you.
Kirsten teaches yoga most mornings at 9am Kirsten on the gorgeous yoga Palapya looking onto the bluest ocean expanse. Even if you never practiced yoga before Kirsten is a wonderful nurturing teacher for all levels at the same time!
Milio offers 1 ½ - 2hr massages and it was exactly what I needed to relax even more. It was heavenly. He is also a very skilled hair cutting artist and is well known in Chicago. I saw a woman get a cut and she definitely was transformed with a chic haircut that would have cost her big bucks in the US!
Kirsten & Milio and all the staff are so loving and welcoming I can not wait to book my next trip back there! They go above and beyond to make you feel comfortable & attend to your needs or any daytrips you are interested in doing.
Try to book your next day’s excursions the night before with Kirsten since some of the daytrips begin at 9am and last all day. I did 1 excursion to snorkel Hol Chan and Shark Alley and then go to Caye Caulker. What an experience to last a lifetime. We swam with the sharks, sting rays, turtles and so many amazing fish! I went on another snorkel trip to the Mexican Rocks with Steven Akbol’s underwater guide. Steven really knows his stuff since his dad is a dive master and Steven basically grew up in the water.
Akbol’s breakfast lunch, daily specials & drinks are the cheapest and best I have found on the island & the portions are plentiful! Mollie and Lilly in the kitchen serve wonderful Belizean food – I can go on and on… Served with a smile from friendly Oscar who will tend to your bar needs and Johnny who is happy to climb a tree to get you a coconut. Definitely order the Belizean Breakfast or the 2 salbutes, 2 papusas & 1 panada filled with your choice. Anything you order with fry jacks is great. Much of Akbol is simply hanging out at the bar area as there is always something going on. Sometimes the Lyrical King will stop by and play a few tunes for a beer or 2. He is a helluva great time.
Luckily Akbol’s food/bar close down at 5pm so you must try other places on the island. A few steps from Akbol is the Palapya Bar & Grill and we spent many nights here. Other great places walking on the beach with a flashlight (A GOOD FLASHLIGHT IS A MUST HERE!!) is Aji, & Capricorn.
Akbol is about 1 mile from the center of San Pedro town in Ambergris Caye & it is the perfect location – not too far from town and not too near to it.
Town is a water taxi away (or rent a golf cart or a bicycle) to go into town for any nightlife. For dinner in San Pedro, I highly recommend Elvis, El Patio, & Fido’s. Oh Legends has the best burgers and there is also a vegetarian bean burger with all the fixin’s that was delicious. On Tuesday nights go here for some live music and dancing.
I can go on and on! Akbol is a spectacular & calming and I can’t wait to plan my next trip back to Akbol and see all my new friends!

We spent four days over christmas at Ak'bol...don't be fooled: it is much more than a yoga retreat. Milio and Kirsten are beautiful people, who work hard to create an environment that is loving and welcoming to all. We were with our ten year old son, who met up with other kids (including Roman, Milio and Kirsten's 10 year old) and they ran around playing all day long - a parent's dream vacation. The food at the restaurant is delicious and reasonably priced, the people who work there are adorable, and the rooms are clean and comfortable. Milio and Kirsten go out of their way to make sure they can deliver you everything that you need, or arrange any special outings you want. Be prepared that the lighting in the rooms was designed more for romance than reading and bring your own small portable or a headlamp. And the showers are all outdoors, but there is hot water.

Great food, great prices, great people, great location. Is there a theme here? Yes! If you get to Ambergris Caye, you must visit Ak'bol. You will be back. This is my FAVORITE place on the island. Milio, Kirsten, Oscar and Johnny greet you with a smile. Cynthnia makes the best stuff peppers anywhere. Great Belizean food!! Steven is one of the best snorkel guides we have experienced. His kindess and patience with young children is to be commended. Don't miss Ak'bol.

My husband and I accidentally discovered Ak Bol cruising the back roads of the island. Much to our surprise, Ak Bol was a dream! Next time we come back to Belize this is DEFINITELY where we will stay. (We stayed at Coco Beach this time). The scenery driving up to the back of Ak Bol from the road was serene with beautiful tropical flowers everywhere, very tranquil. We took one look at the view of the ocean and the adorable beach bar hut and knew we had to stay at Ak Bol. It gets better....the chicken and beef papusas are to die for!!!! My husband ordered three orders of them and we really weren't even that hungry to begin with! We ventured out the beach to look at the gorgeous scenery at Ak Bol and a very friendly man walked up to us as he noticed us taking pictures. He asked if we would like him to take our picture, we were VERY appreciative as it is tough to take pictures together when just two people are travelling...so we got to talking to this friendly gentleman who was very casual and had been sitting at a table with a good group of folks. They were laughing and smiling...come to find out, this gentleman was the owner! And the table of laughing friendly people were all of the workers of the resort. Needless to say, we stayed for two or three hours! Ak Bol is a very welcoming atmosphere, the precious little beach bar is directly on the beach and appropriately shaded with beautiful palm trees everywhere. One of the guys that worked there climbed one of the trees to greet several of the people there with coconuts, cut them open for us and we enjoyed the milk with some rum from the bar, DELICIOUS! Ak Bol is a MUST see and visit place whether you want to stay at the resort or simply stop in for some papusas, drinks, and beautiful scenery of Belize. We will DEFINITELY go back to Ak Bol when we return to Belize!!!!

We went to Ak'Bol for our honeymoon and couldn't have picked a better spot! We were greeted by eveyone who worked at Ak'Bol when we arrived, brought to our incredible cabana right on the beach and were continually given special attention the whole time we stayed (and not just us, all the guestS staying were made to feel equally important). I wasn't too concerned about the lack of A/C, but my husband was, although that worry soon went away once we felt that incredible ocean breeze, we didn't need air at all!

Staying at Ak'Bol felt like staying with an incredibly happy family. Oscar (bar), Steven (boat captain), Johnny (do it all guy), Cynthia and Lily(cooks) were all amazing, happy, friendly people that were more than happy to accomodate any request. And Kristen and Emilio were better hosts than I could have imagined!

Ak'Bol itself was the most amazing location, not too far from town, but far enough to be serene and peaceful. We rented a golf cart for the week to get into town at night because the restaurant at Ak'Bol closes at five. It was roughly $300 for the week and we really only used it at night, if you could split the cost and use with someone else it would probably make more sense. We didn't use the water taxi at all, and did hear that it was fairly unreliable in terms of pick up and drop off, but I can't say for sure.

Tips: if you drink, bring alcohol from duty free, it is very expensive to drink in San Pedro. The food at Ak'Bol was fantastic, and quite reasonably priced for the amount of food you get, but runs out fast, especially when Cynthia is cooking her BBQ chicken or Lily her famous fried chicken. If you plan on eating a little later than 12-1, ask them to put a plate aside for you. Other great restaurants, Wild Mango, Aji, Fido's and Sunset Grill. Although they are definetly more touristy and busy than the laid back atmosphere of Ak'Bol, so prepare for that.

All in all it was one of the best trips I have ever taken, and I have travelled a fair amount. If you are looking to relax, meet great people, feel welcomed and at home and be completly at peace Ak'Bol is the right place!

Actually, there is not much to add to the other reviews. Everything was just perfect during our stay! The beachfront cabanas were beautiful and very clean. When we opened the door to our front porch in the morning it felt as you could jump into the sea right from the bed. The food was great, the prizes reasonable and the owners and staff always friendly and helpful.
You should not miss the snorkeling trips with Steven. We went to Hol Chan and Mexico Rocks and it was great! What we also appreciated, was that the trips could be set up very spontaneously and were quite affordable. We really enjoyed our stay there and will definitely come back! I promise you will not be disappointed!
