“Cowboy Doug or Cowboy Drunk?”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 June 2012

We didn't stay at Grand Caribe Belize Resort but it was certainly a beautiful place. We did stop in to have drinks and food at Cowboy Doug's pool bar. The pool is absolutely gorgeous and the staff at the bar were top notch. The food was very good as well the drinks.

Unfortunately we met Cowboy Doug and his sidekick while staying in Ambergris Caye. Both of these guys were drunk off their butts. They were rude and the sidekick was getting a little too friendly with one member of our party. What was a great day ended up with a sour ending. We plan to visit Belize again but it will be doubtful if we ever stop at Cowboy Doug's pool bar. Too bad because it is certaintly a nice place!

While we appreciate that you placed a review here on Grand Caribe's tripadvisor even though you did not stay here and for the kind words in regards to Grand Caribe and Cowboy Doug's Pool Bar.

We must mention that this encounter did not occur at Grand Caribe. And while you are defaming a decent man and a Grand Caribe guest (the sidekick). These events are in no way a reflection of Grand Caribe. It is our understanding that there was a mis-communication at a local restaurant involving a Grand Caribe guest whom your party was chatting with while you visited us (who was in the company of Doug). We take no responsibility for the encounters our guests have (especially outside of Grand Caribe) whether they are friendly or otherwise.

Thank you once again for your kind words and we do hope you visit our wonderful staff at Cowboy Doug's.

Our group was there for 8 nights. Have stayed in a few places on Ambergris Caye. Grand Caribe so far has been the best. Very clean, very good service. They also did our laundry for free which I have never seen. The pool area is beautiful. Cowboy Doug's was great. It's small but there are areas outside to sit or you can sit in the pool at the bar to eat and/or drink. Some of the group had been there several times and some were Ambergris Caye virgins. They said they would love to return. The only downside was we were not there during lobster season. All other trips it was lobster season so we will be sure for our next trip to plan during lobster season. Has a very nice dock for the tour folks to pick you up. I highly recommend Grand Caribe for your trip to San Pedro on Ambergris Caye. There are many restaurants on the island that have fabulous food. Buy your wine and hard liquor at the duty free store in Belize City. If there is a downfall to San Pedro, it is the price of bottles of hard liquor. The pictures you see on the website, honestly depict the resort. There is no crime against the visitors on Ambergris Caye and the people are extremely friendly. Do we love Ambergris Caye, YOU BETTA BELIZE IT !!!

Room Tip: You do not have to be ocean front to have a view, however if you are not, you need a 2nd or 3rd floo...

We stayed her for a week. Loved it! We are a family of six and it was a perfect size. Two full bedrooms, each with a bath. The master bedroom featured a jetted tub and seperate shower. The third bed was a pull out in the sofa. The condo had a large living area that was open to the kitchen and dinning room. We also had a patio with seating for four. Located right on the beach. Other amenities were two pools, two hot tubs, bar (including a swim up bar) and small restaurant. The only real down side is you are not near town. You can walk to town, but it takes awhile. The beach is not a swimming beach, lots of sea grass, so plan on swimming mostly in the pool. The on site restaurant was ok, but not fabulous, very basic food. Huge perk, FREE laundry service!! We would definately stay here again!

Room Tip: We were in E2 near the lobby and looking out to the pool and ocean further off, but I don't thin...

Let's just jump right to the point, this was the best trip I have ever been on and this resort was a huge reason why. We had a 3 bedroom condo and while there is some variability because all the condos are privately owned ours was amazing. The most difficult thing we had to deal with what figuing out what all the light switchs did (which I might add can be made into a drinking game). I knew this place was going to be good right from the start when they put up with my months worth of questions before we even arrived. Being my first trip to Belize, I needed to find out how to get to the island, how to get to the hotel, what I needed when there and they answered all of the questions, were upfront on pricing( if there even was a charge), and either set up the solutions for me or directed me to where I could get the answer. I did most of this through e-mail and their response time was spectacular, one time they even apologized for a "delayed response" ( about 6 hours later) when I asked a question on a Saturday. The grounds are beauitful, there are a total of 4 pools and 2 hot tubs plus a beach and a dock. The hot tubs didn't seem to work when we were there (although I only checked once so maybe it was a bad day), but when it is 88 degrees and 88 percent humidity who wants to be in a hot tub, plus our tub in our room was a whirlpool tub. The ocean has a fair amount of sea grass in the shallows but this is common on the island, but they clear it off the beach and from around the dock which provides some great snorkeling. Snorkeling under the dock is like going snorkeling in an aquarum, you can see lots of fish, crabs, lobsters, rays, urchins and plenty more. The condo was big, had plenty of space, a nice full kitchen, wonderful beds that I would have stolen if I could fit them in a suitcase, the air conditioning worked well, and the internet connection while not the fastest, did work so if you wanted to harass your coworkers on facebook you could. The resort can set up all of your tours for most of the things you want to do, which is great because rather than have to get somewhere for the tour you just leave from the lobby or docks at the resort. The tour companies they used all provided very good tours, the guides were friendly and seemed to enjoy what they did. One word of warning, remember you are in Belize, sometimes things run on "Belize time", sometimes a tour operator will have to cancel (although it didn't happen to us) and sometimes the weather will cut short a tour. If you are the type of person who cannot handle everything not being exactly how it is written on your paper, you may not want to go to Belize. I would also be remiss if I didn't mention Cowboy Doug's bar and grill. While maybe not the most glamourus looking place, the staff is friendly and helpful, the food is quite good, you can sit in the pool and enjoy a meal or beverage which is awesome in it's own right, and you can actually meet Doug which you should do because he is quite entertaining. The other great thing about Ambergris is unlike some of the of the all inclusives in Mexico or Jamaica that are amazing but all sanitized on the grounds but questionable to leave, you can easily go off the reservation, to other resturants, resorts, and into town and not have to worry much about being in danger. You can actually experience more than just the resort. I could go on and on about Grand Caribe, Ambergris, and San Pedro, but if you are planning a vacation go here, but be warned the hardest part will be leaving.

Room Tip: The 3 bedroom condos are up 3 flights of stairs and there are no elevators, so if you have issue wit...

My husband and I booked a last minute trip to Belize in April 2012. We settled on Grand Caribe based on reviews and location (Grand Caribe is one of the closest resort to town). We splurged for the Penthouse room A1. The view was phenomenal! The room was very spacious and clean which beautiful furnishings. The kitchen had more gadgets than I would ever use in my own house. The housekeeping service was wonderful, they even washed our dirty clothes while we were there (it's the little things)! The only problem we had with the room were ants on occassion but that wasn't a big deal to us. The staff at the resort is very friend. Chi at the bar is awesome!! We actually met him out on the town one night and he gave us the local low-down.
There isn't much of a beach here so if you are looking for a beach that goes on for miles (like Mexico) you won't find that here. Also, while the water is stunning, you can't really walk in from the beach as there is lots of seagrass hiding crabs and other critters. You can however jump in the water from the pier to avoid the grass.
The only negative about the resort is the food options. The pool bar food is okay but the prices are outrageous compared to the rest of the island. We ended up going to Palapa Bar (sort golf cart ride from the resort) every day for lunch...and sometimes dinner.
Now food- we loved the Palapa Bar. The staff was awesome, they knew us by name by the end of the week. It's low-key good bar food. I think I ate the pulled-pork sandwich every day. It was awesome. Also, the drinks are fantastic. The other restaurants that we went to (all of which were great) were Elvi's, Wild Mango's, Red Ginger, Legends, Ahi, and Mathieu's. We went to Blue Water Grill but that was our least favorite meal of the entire trip. Fido's a good bar to go to at night for live music. Legends also had live music on Tuesday which was great since it's so close to the resort.
We did 2 excursions while we were there- snorkeling with Lil' Alfonse and a day trip to Manatee Swallow Park, Caye Caulker, and Goff's Caye. I can't recommend Lil' Alfonse enough. We did the trip to Hol Chan and it was out of this world amazing. I wish I would have snorkeled with him everyday. He is an awesome guide. The other excursion was nice but it was a lot of time on the boat instead of the in water. I would recommend going to Caye Caulker though, it's a very cool, hippie place.
Tips for your trip: 1. Take bug spray, the bugs will eat your alive. 2. Rent a golf cart for your stay, it's much cheaper and more convenient that using a taxi (and it's fun). 3. Snorkel or dive as much as you can.
Belize is a magical place, the people are friendly, San Pedro is safe, and the atmosphere is so refreshing. We will be going back to Belize as certified divers and I will be diving the Blue Hole. :)

We were trying to decide to stay at a resort in town (Phoenix) or away and SO glad we picked the Grand Caribe. Beautiful room, huge pool area and very clean. Went with another couple and 2 bedroom suite was perfect. Stayed in E6 and loved the view from our room and furnishings. We all loved that you could get to town by taxi ($20 US inc tip one way),by golf cart (rent by hour or all day - never laughed so hard), bike for $6 1/2 day or we walked one day. Never used the water taxi, because didn't seem convenient for when we wanted to leave. Yes, road to and from town is very bumpy and dusty, but an experience. You get used to it quickly as part of the culture. If we were going out at night we took a cab - just call front desk to let you know what time you want to leave and one will be ready. Grand Caribe was very responsive with anything we asked for - golf cart ready, bikes to rent, room service, where to eat, taxi waiting, more towels, etc. All felt very safe in the day and night - plenty of security around the resort. Also, toll bridge costs seem to keep fewer people from town to resort area on north side.

We couldn't decide to take a water taxi from Belize City or Tropic Air to San Pedro. We decided to take Tropic Air. Yes, very small - holds 20 passengers, small and hot, but only 15 min. and a beautiful view from the air. Smooth ride both ways. Experienced pilots. Will admit nerve wracking, but was distracted by taking pictures. We did end up taking the water taxi from San Pedro to Belize City for an all day mainland trip and it took 1 hour 15 min each way. It is loud (take your headphones) and can be bumpy (take your ginger gum (Walgreens), but does go by fast. It stops both ways in Caye Caulker to pick up and drop off other people. Can be full boat.

Favorite restaurants in order:
Capricorn - great place for breakfast (rode bikes - opens at 8:15 am) and dinner (took golf cart) - wonderful fresh fish and great selection. Excellent coconut creme pie.
AJI- dinner - (5 min walk on beach), most romantic place ever outside, service ok (depends on waiter) and food was pretty good.
Blue Water Grill - in town, very good food (pizza and sushi) and very clean.
Fido's - fun for lunch and at night have a band. Very popular place.
Palapa's Bar and Grill - fun for a drink over the water, very breezy. Owner from Florida.
Mannely's Ice Cream - very good on a hot day after being on the water

Activites:
Hol Chan and Shark Ally snorkeling trip - arranged a private tour and he picked us up at the resort. Could have gone longer than 3 hours. Saw lots of great fish. $60 per person.

Tour of mainland to Belize - (6 am - 4:30 pm) from San Pedro to Belize City. Arranged tour from shop in town by dive boats. Water taxi to and from Belize City. Saw the Mayan ruins (very hot outside and very long drive from the city) and then went cave tubing - highlight of the trip (avoid Tues., Wed. and TH cruise ship days). Well worth the trip, because we had the jungle and cave to ourselves. Had to carry own tubes 25 min in jungle (can be physical), cross the river 3 times (shallow water) and arrived at the 1 mile cave tour. It was beautiful, refreshing and not scary at all (afraid of the dark and bats). Our guide was excellent. Roads are very bumpy on mainland. Trip was worth seeing and experiencing the country. Cost was $125 per person.

Caye Caulker trip - took water taki - short 25 min. ride each way to have lunch and drinks (Lazy Lizard). Spent about 4 hours - not much to do, but very pretty. Very relaxing. People suggested to eat at the Rainbow Rest. - but was clsoed for a private event.

Chicken drop on Thursday night's only at a hotel in town. Very fun to watch.

Didn't do this trip, but would suggest - ziplining by cave tubing and Belikin Beer tour in Belize City, taking a water taxi just to see the Blue Hole (2 hours each way). Also, having a drink at the Coco Beach Resort -not far by bike from the Grand Caribe.

What to bring: ground Starbucks coffee, sugar packs, suntan lotion, bug spray (only used went to jungle tour), small headphones, waterproof bag, snacks (power bars, nuts, chips), comfortable flip flops, snorkeling gear if plan on going more than once, water shoes, hat to cover ears, tums for all the wonderful Maria Sharp's hot sauce, bandaids, and water video.

Food - loved all the coconut rum, hot sauce, Lighthouse beer, Belikin beer and fresh fish. Can drink water from room - all filtered.

Negatives - AT&T phone does have service, but very expensive. Signed up for data and roaming before I left and found out phone was cut off, becuase bill was $800. Of course, disputing found out Belize not covered even though I asked prior and was misinformed. Be careful on international calling and call your provider before departing. Belize has a problem with trash and sewer. We all did get used to it after a few days. Dirty taxi's and no ac., roads very bumpy and dusty, dirty city overall. Beach area has a lot of grass and can't swim from resort. Positives out weigh the negatives.

We all had a great time and will be back someday to beautiful Belize.

We just returned from a week at Grand Caribe & we'd head back in a heart beat! My hubby & I stayed in D8 which is a perfect condo for the 2 of us. The furnishings were above my expectations & we wish we could have brought the bed, linens, & bathroom back with us! Even though we only ate breakfast & lunch in the condo, the kitchen had every convenience to prepare dinners if we wanted. The view from our veranda was simply amazing & that's where we spent most of our indoor time....relaxing under the stars made for great sleeping! I'm thrilled that we went with the OV bec. we could easily see the beautiful grounds as well as the Sea.

Yes, we walked the beach, looking at other resorts & knew that our decision to stay at GC was the right choice. The complex is so spacious compared to others. The 3 pools were spectacular with plenty of lounge chairs to plop down on as well as lots of umbrellas to help with the scorching sun. Oh how I miss those pools already! The chairs & palm trees at the well maintained beach were idyllic for those times when we wanted to watch the boats pass by.

The staff knew who we were from the moment they opened the door for us. That just made us realize how much they wanted us to feel at home. A super special shout out to Roxanne & Melody for laughing with me & answering all of our questions with a smile. The security folks were awesome & somehow they kept track of who was coming & going. Marvin was a sweetheart!

We did book a snorkeling & Lamanai trip thru the concierge & found that their fees were more than fair. Knowing that we'd want to explore San Pedro, we had GC get us a golf cart. They didn't charge us for delivery or gas, which was highly unusual & greatly appreciated. Hubby & I loved the bumpy road to town - yes, at times we felt that we might lose our teeth, but it sure was fun! This wasn't something we'd find here at home & therefore we enjoyed the experience! We did head into town almost every nite bec. again, it was interesting to see a part of Belize that is so different than the resort. Never once were we uncomfortable in any way - the town folks were pretty cool & helpful.

Cowboy Doug's was a great place to catch a meal & enjoy a few drinks. The "cook" on our 1st. nite was great...sorry that I didn't catch his name. The morning of departure, i had the fry jacks. Holy smokes, I should have gotten them every day! On Sunday, we loved the Ribs & Chicken BBQ that tasted as good as it smelled!

I did read a review where someone was truly unhappy at GC, saying that it wasn't a place for "couples". Perhaps it was the particular week that they were there...I've heard that Easter is a very busy time. All I can say is that as an older couple, we had the time of our lives meeting the staff, other guests, & experiencing Heaven on Earth at Grand Caribe!

Room Tip: I suggest the OV rooms because from there, you can see everything!
