“The Three F's: Fishing, Family & FABULOUS”
Reviewed 8 April 2013

My husband and 24-year-old son just returned from El Pescador on Ambergris Caye in Belize, where they spent a blissful week fishing every day from the crack of dawn until sunset before returning to the hotel for a fantastic meal served family-style with the 60 or so other guests. There also seems to be an equal number of super-friendly staff in this family-owned resort.

Family is an operative word along with bonefish, tarpon and permit. Three generations of the hosts' family live on the property and so the feeling of a warm, extended family permeates El Pescador. While my husband and son were there, they met another father-son pair as well as vacationing brothers and a few families (the moms and daughters mainly shopped and took excursions to the Mayan ruins, etc). There is also excellent snorkeling and scuba diving.

There are 13 rooms in the main lodge and then eight, two-story, 3-bedroom, 3-bath villas that can be rented as 1, 2 or 3 bedrooms. The villas have cathedral ceilings of Belizean hardwood and coral stone floors. The views are drop-dead spectacular.

Only two slight downsides to this particular trip: Neither male in my family got the Grand Slam of fishing (bonefish, permit and tarpon). They didn't even see any permit and my son let his lone tarpon torpedo away but they had great fun catching, shall we say, a boatload of bonefish? The only person to walk away with the Grand Slam last week was a professional fisherman so we can assume that says more about skill than the paucity of tarpon and permit around Ambergris Caye.

The other downside (again, slight) was the Internet service was spotty so it was several days before the guys got a chance to bike about 5 miles to an Internet bar on the beach where they (finally) let me know they arrived safely -- while downing conch fritters and Cervezas.

They take care of EVERYTHING at El Pescador from the moment you arrive in Belize City to the short flight to San Pedro and the water taxi to El Pescador. Excellent lunches are provided for the fishing days.

Room Tip: This is a great place to rent 3-bedroom, 3-bath villas for the whole family.

Our expectations were exceeded at every turn! From the moment we arrived, we were pleasantly surprised with the staff and how they went over and beyond constantly. We were fortunate enough to be able to take advantage of all the resort had to offer. The guided fishing adventure taught us both how to fly fish and we were both able to catch our first bonefish! The dive sights are incomparable to any other dive we have ever done. We dove the Blue Hole, the reef, and even got to experience a pod of dolphins and multiple sea turtles right out from the resort. After long days full of fun, we enjoyed the hospitality of the staff and the owners over amazingly delicious dinners and drinks! We ended up loving the "family style" of dinner. This was truly everything we hoped our honeymoon would be! We can't wait to come back!

The staff at El Pescador treat you like old friends the minute you arrive, even if it is your first visit. The location is beautiful and the fishing is outstanding. The service and food are great and our every need was anticipated and met with a smile. The accommodations are comfortable and there is so much to do in the area that we will certainly be back. The family-style dinners provide a casual atmosphere where you can meet some really interesting people from all over the world.

We just returned from our second stay at El Pescador and are looking forward to our third! Day trips and other reservations are handled and executed effortlessly by staff who know your name. Family style meals are delicious (always 2 meat options at dinner and desserts to die for) and a great time to share experiences with other guests. The resort is quiet during the day as many are out fishing, with 3 pools at the resort we had one to ourselves! Happy hour is festive and the margaritas are the best on the island. Our villa had an ocean view, great beds, furnished deck with a hammock, a pitcher of water in the fridge and a 5 gallon dispenser as well. See you at El Pescador!

Coming from France after a very long trip, it was all worth it. We had an unforgettable stay at the El Pescador thanks to the owners, the staff and the fishing guides who have been extremely friendly and always eager to accommodate all our needs at any time . A very unusual and amazing high standard of service during the whole week. We travelled to many places in the world, but this one is very special and unique. This was my first trip accompanying my husband to a fly fishing place. As a fly fishing beginner, the Director of fishing, Lorri Ann Murphy largely contributed to make this stay a very memorable experience. I cannot say enough about her patience and precious advices during fly casting lessons. It was a real privilege to get to know this great and exceptional woman. Many, thanks to her. For those not interested in fly fishing, there are plenty of other activities to be enjoyed like bicycling, canoeing and diving.. . Last, the food was very good and served family style everyday allowing people to share their experiences of the day in a very convivial atmosphere. We will definitively plan another trip in the future to have the pleasure to see again all the wonderful El Pescador family! Marie A

We spent a week at this lovely resort to celebrate my son's wedding to his wonderful bride. I cannot express enough gratitude to the facility and staff for making this an exceptional event.
From the arrival time of silly behavior to the formality of the beach-side wedding, El Pescador staff handled the diversity of our party with courteous finesse. Though I was not always party to the details, none of the guests mentioned any difficulties. Our primary reason for our trip was to celebrate a wedding. However, the fishing was spectacular.

Much of the credit is due to expert fly casting instruction of L.A. and our fishing Sensei Sinoe the Fish Whisperer. WIndy conditions proved to be a task to which our guide adapted our novice experience. I believe on our first day, we boated 21 bone after casting to......well, so many. "tck, tck tck". He even was able to put a bone fish on the fly to Laura who has only fly fished for trout, bass or pan fish on calm days. Reports around Mariano's Bar at El Pescador (excellent barkeep) showed that each guide was as adept to our ineptness.
The facillities are superb. The cuisine was unexpectedly wonderful, The dinning staff quite accommondating. How they remember each one's name and preferences is truly remarkable.
I am also an outfitter who runs a destination lodge. I highly recommend El Pescador as a destination for anyone who wishes to have a wonderful tropical fishing experience at a quality facility with phenomenal staff.

Thank you Chis and your Staff.

See you soon,
Tom and Laura

I have to say that the staff at El Pescador were absolutely amazing!! . They were able to accommodate almost 30 guests with ease. The food is top notch as well as the everyday experience of the lodge. We had a mixed group of anglers and non anglers and no one ever said that they felt like they had nothing to do. The extra trips that El Pescador arranged for us were just as great as the lodge( Zip lining and cave tubing). My wedding day was relaxed and stress free!! They made sure that everything was set up and ready, all i did was show up in a dress! We plan in coming back in the future knowing that they exceeded our expectations in every way!!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
El Pescador’s beachfront lodge and villas are situated on over 45 private acres with ambiance, specializing in fishing, diving and eco-adventures. We are family-owned and operated with emphasis on creating camaraderie and an authentic Belizean experience. El Pescador is proud of our philosophy to protect and nurture friendship, adventure and the environment. El Pescador has long been known as a world-class fishing destination offering outstanding flats fishing for bonefish, tarpon and permit. El Pescador has been the only resort on Ambergris Caye specializing in saltwater flats fishing since 1974. Since coming under new ownership in 1997, the resort has established itself as an eco-friendly tropical getaway, including a commitment to offset all carbon emissions generated by its guests flying to Belize. Donations are made on behalf of guests to a local Belizean non-profit organization, Green Reef Environmental Educational and Coastal Research Institute, to offset the carbon emissions used to travel to Belize. El Pescador was also among the key organizations to implement the new Law protecting bonefish, tarpon and permit as catch and release species. This is the most all encompassing legislation of its kind worldwide. It is great news for Belizeans, anglers, tourists and conservationists alike. El Pescador is a serene and gracious establishment on the doorstep of the world’s largest living Barrier Reef. El Pescador offers accommodations in guest rooms within its colonial style, mahogany main lodge, as well as in 1, 2, and 3 bedroom luxury beachfront villas. The villas are perfect accommodations for couples seeking romance and privacy, and for families and small groups traveling together. All rooms and villas are beachfront and have unobstructed views of the Caribbean blue waters. In addition to unequaled fishing, this first-rate resort offers all the eco-adventures which take full advantage of Belize’s exotic flora and fauna. Scuba diving, snorkeling, manatee watching, cave-tubing and zip-lining, and Maya archaeological explorations are just a small assortment of the activities available while staying at El Pescador. ... more   less
