Beautiful hotel with great attention to detail and the service. Staff was very friendly, helpful and accommodating. I normally do not stay at the same hotel twice but I will definitely stay there again.

My wife and I recently stayed at Matachica for our honeymoon. This is the perfect location for a couple looking to get away from it all and do some serious relaxing. The first thing that stands out about Matachica is the beauty of the resort and the Caribbean waters, but the thing that really sets Matachica apart is the quality of the service. Everyone working there was so kind and helpful and willing to serve your every need. I read someone below said that the staff is rude; that is completely ridiculous. We have nothing but great things to say about the entire staff, and we are so thankful to them for making our stay perfect. In addition to just taking a break from reality, the resort is more than helpful when it comes to arranging scuba, snorkeling, fishing, Mayan ruin trips, etc.

Food: The restaurant, mambo, is fantastic. You should, however, plan on spending some money if you plan to eat there most of the trip. Dinner entrees run from about 22-34$. Portions are generous and the food is excellent (lots of fresh seafood). The complimentary continental breakfast provides you with a very substantial meal, and we enjoyed it. Even though Mambo is very good, we found ourselves wanting to venture out after a few nights to try something else. The neighboring resort has a restaurant called the Rojo lounge that is a fun, relaxed atmosphere and has very different and delicious food. Further down the beach but only a few minutes walk is the Sundiver beach bar which has a tasty and cheap menu.

Overall it was an amazing trip and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing vacation.

Few things to consider:
- Bring sandals that you don't mind getting wet
- Bring multiple swimsuits - the air is extremely humid so things take a long time to dry
- Bring plenty of sunscreen and bug spray for the evenings
- We were able to pick up wireless internet in our room which was really nice, so definitely bring a laptop

The staff is rude. The food is overpriced and the portions are tiny. I would not go back. It is only good if you want to be in the middle of nowhere with a lot of flies and mosquitos.

Matachica is a beautiful resort. The property is lovely for couples wanting a private, romantic and low key resort. They have all the amenities you'd expect out of a top resort - great rooms, lovely location, etc. However, when you pay a premium to stay at a top resort, you expect more. The service was very spotty - when I asked the staff a question, it was often answered with "go ask the front desk." The food was solid but overpriced. We had better meals at Rendevous, Rojo and Wild Mango (which I highly recommend). I also hoped there would be easier access to Central San Pedro. The last Matachica boat left for San Pedro at 5:30 pm and returned to Matachica from Central San Pedro at 6:15 pm. There's a public ferry boat that leaves later in the evening, but it's $10 USD per person each way, which can add an extra $40 for a couple having dinner in town.

As with all reviews, this reflects my personal preferences and experiences. We stayed at Matachica for four nights in late June, 2012 to celebrate our anniversary. We loved the resort, with the exception of the high prices for sunscreen, bug spray and other essentials. Before our trip, we struggled with the decision of Victoria House vs. Matachica. In the end, Matachica won out because it seemed more beachy, more casual and more unique. After seeing both properties, we were happy with our decision. I've been told that Victoria House is the "class" of Ambergris Caye. If that's the case, then Matachica is the "sexy." Seriously, this is one good looking place. From the individual, brightly colored accomodations to the delightfully mismatched decor in the dining palapa, this place doesn't miss.

We stayed in Strawberry, a deluxe beachfront casita. The accomodations were very comfortable, with soft sheets, excellent towels (both bath and beach towels) and great amenities. The resort provides a lot for its guests: a good hair dryer, a large golf umbrella for rain, nice robes, good water pressure. We wanted for nothing. The only drawback to the casita is the thatched roof: on extremely hot days, the A/C didn't work quite as well as we would have liked. Cool rather than cold. But we made it work.

Your room rate comes with an ample continental breakfast. I think it would get repetitive after a week, but for a four night stay, it was good. Lunch entrees are good at the on-site restaurant, but we found dinner to be lacking (I'll do a separate review for the restaurant), and went elsewhere after pretty poor food our first night.

The resort has lots of nice and private places to relax, from chairs on the dock to the beach and the pool. Our favorite was out on the dock, where the breezes tended to keep us cooler. The resort is immaculate and the staff is exceptionally friendly and helpful (and hard-working, employees rarely if ever stand around and do nothing).

This resort is pricey and they do, in my opinion, overcharge for certain things. Sunscreen and bugspray where double what we bought them for in San Pedro, and excursions cost more than going through another operator. For example, our snorkel trip to Hol Chan was $70 vs. $50 through a place in town. However, our guide was good and it was convenient, so it was worth the premium for us.

The spa is also very nice. We received a 90 minute couples massage that was great - prices were in line with what we pay at a nice spa in Atlanta, though I'm sure there are "cheaper" places, the ambiance and skill of the masseuses was worth the extra money.

In the end, I'm glad we stayed at Matachica. I actually liked its location far from town. We've spent time on many Caribbean islands, and Ambergris Caye was sadly not a favorite. I like a slightly seedy island paradise (BVI and St. John are favorites) but San Pedro just seemed run down without the charm. Also, we were offered pot everywhere we went in San Pedro. I really don't care, but I just wanted to walk around and have dinner, not fend off drug peddlers. We had a great trip, and as far as I could tell, Matachica was one of the best places on the island. We enjoyed our stay there and I'd recommend it highly to anyone who wants to visit Ambergris Caye.

Spent 6 nights in celebration of our 25th anniversary. It's quiet, romantic, lots of honeymooners.
Our beachfront, deluxe casita was lovely. Except for the restaurant/bar area, which had good music playing, the resort is very quiet. We took long walks on the beach daily. The restaurant is excellent. We ate all but one meal there & were never disappointed. The staff was very friendly, always greeting us by name.

Room Tip: The beach isn't great, lots of eel grass, but that's Ambergris. They rake it up daily but it...

Quiet, secluded, and perfect where every employee treats you like royalty. The food at the restaurant is amazing. The drink prices are a little steep, but oh well.
