This is a romantic resort with a wonderful beach atmosphere. The pool is amazing; the bungalows are charming. The staff is very helpful and friendly.
Snorkeling on the reef in front of the hotel was one of the many things we loved at this resort. We used the provided kayak, life vests, and snorkel gear to paddle out 20 minutes to the hotel buoy. We tied up the boat there and spent hours snorkeling. The reef life is amazing! We saw so many different fish and corals. If you want to see larger fish, wrays, and sharks, make sure to book a guided tour through a local company.
The other thing we really loved was the pool and hot tub. It wasn't crowded or busy and was a great way to relax.
The restaurant was nice, and I really enjoyed the complementary breakfast even though there were more expensive options available. We also were completely delighted with the beach bar called Rojo at the next door resort!
We also enjoyed taking the complimentary boat into San Pedro for a shopping trip.

Room Tip: We didn't have the most expensive rooms and were completely impressed and satisfied with the Sea...

We were thrilled with Matachica for the "beach" part of our Belize trip.

We found it populated with many couples, mostly in 20s & 30s as well as enough older couples so that we didn't feel out of place with our 50-ish grey hair! Some families with teen or older kids were also around. Overall the vibe is low key. We saw no one acting over served and heard no partying at night.

At 26 rooms (I believe) the resort has enough guests that you don't interact in a B&B sort of way and people pretty much keep to themselves. Still it is small enough that you get to know the staff and feel you are a regular within a day or so. Also the staff are very friendly, highly helpful.

The rooms don't have numbers, but names so all charges and accounts are tied to that room name which makes it feel more like a vacation. We did not have a beach-front cottage, but it was maybe a 30-second walk to the beach from our front door. AC was great; screens and shutters allow natural ventilation if you prefer.

Don't discount the "continental" breakfast that is included in at least some room packages. It was varied and substantial--we got it every day and were very happy. The restaurant was great in general with good service, excellent food and a nice variety. The menu is seafood centered, of course, but includes some pasta dishes. Don't miss the ceviche! We ate dinner there three of our four nights and went in to town for the fourth night and the food at the restaurant is much better than what we had in town. Indeed, nothing in town really looked all that great. If we go again, we'll see about eating at restaurants at other hotels or resorts as they seem to offer the best food.

Our goal was to sit on or near the beach and chill out and for that Matachica was perfect. Lots of sun and fresh air. If you want activities, they have them--including some free waterfront things like snorkeling gear, kayaks, paddle boats and standup paddle boards. They also offer organized trips of various kinds.

If you think you want to spend a lot of time in San Pedro, many resorts are closer. The last Matachica boat back to the resort leaves town at 6:30 pm, then a water taxi runs trips up there leaving at 8:30 and 10:30 for US$10 per person. We found little that appealed in town and could have enjoyed another several days (in addition to our 4) at Matachica without feeling the need to wander any further.

Nicely situated north of most San Pedro hotels. Small strip of beach, but very well kept. The villas are big, windows are all outfitted with wooden slatted blinds.

This is a self-contained resort, which is good because there is no other place nearby you would want to visit. Three meals a day served in the main lodge (all very good) get you well acquitted with other guests and the staff. After a day, you feel like one big family.

The beach of San Pedro faces east, so the sun sets behind the jungle early in the afternoon during winter, so get up early to get a full day of sunshine. Otherwise, take a kayak out to the reef or walk out to the end of the pier to extend your direct sunlight.

The staff is well trained, but there is a genuine warmth that makes Mata Chica a very special place.

One extra tidbit--the island often loses electricity, but this hotel maintains its own generators, which came on often and kept the lights and AC running without a hitch.

Room Tip: The beach villas on the north side of the resort are the newest, have the widest stretch of beach an...

Took the boat from Fido's north to the resort on Valentines Day for a pre-arranged day for 4 couples. The resort staff was ALL incredible. Warm, welcoming, friendly service all day. We arranged our day with Burga who went above and beyond! Sam and Ever kept us hydrated. Our dinner was delicious and the spa staff exceeded our expectations! Thank you Matachica! We WILL be back!

From the moment you arrive the experience begins! The captain as well as a few other members of the Matachica staff where at the airport to greet us. It’s a 15 minute boat ride to the resort where there is a complementary drink waiting for you and a group of warm, friendly Matachica Staff to greet you upon arrival…A FABULOUS WAY TO START YOUR VACATION!

The resort is breathtaking and once you’re ushered into the common area then to your room there’s a real sense of paradise found. We stayed in a Reef View Suite which was lovely and exactly what you’d expect it to be. The week we were there, outside of one night in particular, the air conditioner was unnecessary. Coming for a cold winter climate, this was fabulous (to me).
The staff is wonderful and we were fortunate enough to meet some really kind hearted and wonderful people during our stay at Matachica which almost does make you feel like you’re home or at the least, traveling with family.

The atmosphere is very relaxed and laid back and does put you in the right frame of mind for vacation. The food was good and the coconut mojito is lovely! My only complaint regarding the food (and I said this for the resort we stayed at inland too) is lack of variety regarding the menus. Since you’re not close enough to stroll to a different location and generally eating all of your meals at the resort the same menu every day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner can get a bit boring. However, whatever I did eat I enjoyed.

They do spray /fog the beach daily at 4:30pm to avoid an overabundance of mosquitos which is great on one hand and yet a bit medaling on the other. The majority of our trip we were up and out early which would cause us to arrive back to the resort during usual lunch time hours…a nap during one or two of these days might have been ideal after lunch but due to the timeframe of the fogging – unmanageable. The fog concoction is potent so staying in your room during the process isn’t really an option.

I would also note - for those (like me) who tend to enjoy a bit of television watching before bed that this resort has just one television and a) it’s in the main building and b) only plays DVD’s which (common in the Blockbuster days) you would need to bring the movie box to the front desk to get the actual DVD. I’m fairly certain the television very rarely gets used. We were there during the Super Bowl and the resort lost a fair number of their guests to the mainland so they could watch the game.

Outside of that, the staff is amazing and they’re really looking to make sure that your stay with them at Matachica is an experience you will not only enjoy tremendously but one you would likely want to do again. Meeting a couple who have been going there for years, we were able to see the rapport and the genuine enjoyment and fondness they had for the staff and that the staff had for them and why they choose to make Matachica their home away from home.

Having just returned from Matachica it takes a while to adjust to "real" time from Island time . Everything and everyone at Matachica is in harmony and soon you find yourself so relaxed your world is right there .The owner ( Danny ) and Manager ( Gricel) Keep the resort new, fresh and in perfect order .The staff is beyond Wonderful and I miss them with all my heart .... They treat each person as if they are the stars ....when really they ( the staff ) are in my appreciation of them . If you are looking for The Perfect Resort for whatever your reasons are ....Look No More ...it is here at Matachica ..... Trust me ....we have been coming here for 10years and plan our 60th . anniversary there 2015.Yes it is like coming home .

There is no aspect of this small, intimate hotel that is not tended to with unbelievable care, and the result is a first class resort. Ambergris is a beautiful spot and Belizeans in general are welcoming, warm and very proud of their nation but this particular hotel is run with a level of taste, professionalism, and individual attention that is rare anywhere I have travelled. Did you forget something? If they don't have it at the small gift shop someone will run into town. A small adjustment needed? Someone will come at that very moment.
Combine this with a world-class level of taste in all aesthetic decisions from bed linens to beach towels, and you will feel like you are one of the select few at but a place where everyone is made to feel special no matter who you are.

Room Tip: It seems that all rooms are good. There are some that are directly on the beach, but hose that aren...
