I've traveled to 29 foreign countries. In many of them, I stayed in luxury hotels. But, I never enjoyed any as much as the 8-night stay that my wife and I experienced at Belize's Matachica Resort & Spa in January 2014. We opted for a deluxe beachfront casita. It was worth the extra money. Yet, no matter which lodging one chooses, the service will always be 1st class. Prepare to be pampered! The entire staff (hotel, restaurant, and bar) truly enjoy their jobs, and it thrills them when they see their guests enjoying themselves. By the end of our stay, we felt as if we were among family. (We continue to stay in touch with several by e-mail.) And, let's don't overlook the absolutely superb Mambo Restaurant on the premises. Their dishes, particularly the wide variety of fresh seafood dishes, are among the best ever. Don't forget to top off the evening with a trip to the bar for a Cuban cigar with Belize's famous "1 Barrel" rum. For us, it was the perfect (albeit somewhat delayed) honeymoon getaway--and the vacation of a lifetime. Fond, fond memories! -- "Horangi"

Room Tip: It's worth the extra to have a luxury casita on the beach! Yet, given the arrangement of casita...

This review is much overdue. We travelled to Matachica in June of 2013. It was our 10 year anniversary! I did a lot of research as to where to go in Belize and when I found this place and saw pictures and read reviews, although it was slightly out of our budget, we wanted a great vacation. So we went for it. We ended up with an Excellent Vacation. From the time you email them to book until the time you leave the service is outstanding. The staff were super friendly. My gosh its almost been a year and I still dream about returning all the time. Some people complained that you were not close to the main action on the island, but we loved that. They picked us up from the small airport and were already ordering our drinks. It was an adventure hoping into the Matachica boat that swept you away to their resort. The rooms: well the pictures on their website is what you get. Beautiful!!! Our room was one of the Reef view suites and it was large, romantic cleaned twice a day, and when you opened your door there was the beautiful ocean. Not to mention super comfy bed and a great hammock to chill out in on your front steps. Isreal one of the bar/waiter's was always fun to chat with. Hope you come visit us in Canada! One of the waitresses, I am sorry I can't remember your name, always greeted us by name and with a smile, Abigail I think it was. Doesn't matter they were all friendly and amazing!! Actually everyone greeted you with a smile and most new our names. Even though we were only there for three nights. The resort is small, its peaceful, clean and the food is amazing. We ate most of our meals there. And it wasn't anymore expensive then going to a restaurant in Canada. The free breakfast was outstanding!! lots of food. Lunch was always good!! And the drinks were real drinks from fresh fruit juices! We went into town for one day trip which was a lot of fun. We rented a golf cart and just drove all around. The people were friendly all over the island. Matachica took care of transportation from the exclusive resort into the busier part of the island. 10-15 minute boat ride. SNORKEL SNORKEL with matachica. They took their time and the captain was amazing and new what he was doing. I never have seen so much fish in my life. We saw nurse sharks, sea turtles and so much more. Matachica arranged for us to do some jet skiing. What ever you want just ask them they will try hard to make it happen. The spa was great too. After our three night stay, Matachica arranged our transfer to their sister resort in the jungle called Gaia river lodge (we preplanned this) where we stayed there for 3 days. Took a small flight there. I can write forever, but what beauty, what adventure to have there (zip lining, mayan ruins, cave tubing) what amazing service. Peace and quiet and just as good food as matachica. Both these resorts are hidden gems. Do not look further this is paradise. We can't splurge all the time, and maybe one day we will try a Sandals resort, but they will have to work hard to impress me because so far Matachica is the best we have ever had. Love you guys, miss you and we hope to return!! Rola and Kevin!!!

Room Tip: I think any room would be great. Its a small resort, few steps your at restaurant, pool and beach...

We recently returned to Matachica and had another wonderful stay. Our Beachfront Casita (Watermelon) was well appointed, clean and extremely comfortable. It is quiet, private and 20 steps from the water.

The restaurant and bar are very good. The food is delicious, well prepared and served with a smile. Most of the time we had either Sam or Abby as our wait staff. Both were courteous, prompt and effective. They handled special requests without a hitch.

I had probably my best massage ever from Tiffany at the spa. I briefly described my preferences and she got it perfect. I've had her 3 years in a row and always look forward to the massage.

The best part though is the front desk staff - Irene and Alida. Unfortunately, my wife picked up a bug in Belize before arriving at Matachica. She was a bit under the weather during our entire stay. That meant many special restaurant menu requests that were cheerfully accommodated.
On the day we were supposed to check out, my wife was just not able to travel. No problem. Thankfully, our casita was not rented out for that evening, so we decided to stay one more night. Irene and Alida spent the better part of a morning helping me rebook Tropic Air flights and also our International flights back to the USA. Even though our international airline kept throwing roadblocks up, the women handled the situation graciously and professionally. The ladies also arranged for supplies to be purchased in town and brought to our Casita. They checked on us regularly throughout the day. They turned a potential problem into a very positive experience. To say that they went the extra mile is just not praise enough. They are super.

There are lots of places to stay in Ambergris, but you cannot do better than Matachica. We love the location, the restaurant and the spa. But most of all we return because of the terrific staff. The level of service is exceptional. We'll be back.

Room Tip: Get one of the beachfront casitas. We prefer Watermelon since it's a little farther away from t...

Just got back from five great nights at Matachica in Amergris Caye. About 20 large beautiful air conditioned villas, many on the beach or with a view of the water. Wonderful staff who couldnt do enough for us and always with a smile. Food was very good and the dining area beautiful. The hotel provides boat service to San Pedro and back several times a day or you can take one of the bicycles and ride along the beach. (about 5 miles) There is also a really nice pool and hot tub on the property. Just a great place to relax but there are options for snorkling diving and fishing.

Mata Chica is the perfect hideaway for those who want isolation. It is too far from town and bars, restaurants and nightlife. they do offer boat rides in but only when fitting with pickups with arriving or departing guests. Otherwise you must take and adhere to local water taxi.

That said - rooms perfect. Staff fabulous. Menu could be better Grounds perfect. Beach deceptive - nice sand beach but cannot swim right in due to grass and concealed sharp critters. Must swim in ridiculously small area off pier due to heavy boat traffic .Great great place for honeymooners and those who want elegant isolation.

Room Tip: any location good - beach front great but more expensive

This is a romantic resort with a wonderful beach atmosphere. The pool is amazing; the bungalows are charming. The staff is very helpful and friendly.
Snorkeling on the reef in front of the hotel was one of the many things we loved at this resort. We used the provided kayak, life vests, and snorkel gear to paddle out 20 minutes to the hotel buoy. We tied up the boat there and spent hours snorkeling. The reef life is amazing! We saw so many different fish and corals. If you want to see larger fish, wrays, and sharks, make sure to book a guided tour through a local company.
The other thing we really loved was the pool and hot tub. It wasn't crowded or busy and was a great way to relax.
The restaurant was nice, and I really enjoyed the complementary breakfast even though there were more expensive options available. We also were completely delighted with the beach bar called Rojo at the next door resort!
We also enjoyed taking the complimentary boat into San Pedro for a shopping trip.

Room Tip: We didn't have the most expensive rooms and were completely impressed and satisfied with the Sea...

We were thrilled with Matachica for the "beach" part of our Belize trip.

We found it populated with many couples, mostly in 20s & 30s as well as enough older couples so that we didn't feel out of place with our 50-ish grey hair! Some families with teen or older kids were also around. Overall the vibe is low key. We saw no one acting over served and heard no partying at night.

At 26 rooms (I believe) the resort has enough guests that you don't interact in a B&B sort of way and people pretty much keep to themselves. Still it is small enough that you get to know the staff and feel you are a regular within a day or so. Also the staff are very friendly, highly helpful.

The rooms don't have numbers, but names so all charges and accounts are tied to that room name which makes it feel more like a vacation. We did not have a beach-front cottage, but it was maybe a 30-second walk to the beach from our front door. AC was great; screens and shutters allow natural ventilation if you prefer.

Don't discount the "continental" breakfast that is included in at least some room packages. It was varied and substantial--we got it every day and were very happy. The restaurant was great in general with good service, excellent food and a nice variety. The menu is seafood centered, of course, but includes some pasta dishes. Don't miss the ceviche! We ate dinner there three of our four nights and went in to town for the fourth night and the food at the restaurant is much better than what we had in town. Indeed, nothing in town really looked all that great. If we go again, we'll see about eating at restaurants at other hotels or resorts as they seem to offer the best food.

Our goal was to sit on or near the beach and chill out and for that Matachica was perfect. Lots of sun and fresh air. If you want activities, they have them--including some free waterfront things like snorkeling gear, kayaks, paddle boats and standup paddle boards. They also offer organized trips of various kinds.

If you think you want to spend a lot of time in San Pedro, many resorts are closer. The last Matachica boat back to the resort leaves town at 6:30 pm, then a water taxi runs trips up there leaving at 8:30 and 10:30 for US$10 per person. We found little that appealed in town and could have enjoyed another several days (in addition to our 4) at Matachica without feeling the need to wander any further.
