“Honeymoon spot”
Reviewed 6 April 2014

We stayed here for our Honeymoon. The staff was very attentive and it met our expectations for a relaxing, indulgent vacation. We didn't visit the spa, so I can't comment on it. However, we took advantage of a number of diving tours and restaurant options in and around San Pedro. We loved our stay!

Room Tip: We stayed in both a deluxe beach front casita (Plum, the most secluded casita) and later on a sea br...

Matachica resort is five miles north of San Pedro airport. You are met at the airport, whisked thru a honky tonk downtown area by golf cart to a waiting boat which brings you to the resort. A fun trip.
The accommodations are very nice. Bathrooms and rooms clean. Beds comfy. The area seemed to be very conscious and concerned with mosquito born illness. Each bed was covered with mosquito netting, and during our three night stay, the windows were sprayed with insecticide twice!
The food was excellent, with a large menu. We were on a prepaid meal plan. I had lobster for dinner every night. Excellent! Key lime pie for dessert was great!
The beach was clean. There were many places to sit down inside and out. The thatch covered rooms were individual buildings. Beautiful trees, flowers...were ubiquitous.
You could even get a massage here!

My only problem with Matachica was the music which blared from the dining room during lunch and dinner. Not one song was without a persistent, loud drum beat!! Boom, boom boom echoed in the open dining area and spread to the surrounding sleeping areas. Boom, boom, boom....until about 10PM. And this music is so NOT NEEDED. Here we are, surrounded by gorgeous nature....blue sky, plants, flowers, birds. You can even hear the lap of the little waves in the water, only 50 yards away. But all this peaceful atmosphere is literally destroyed by.....you guessed it....BOOM, BOOM, BOOM!!! We complained to waiters and management. They lowered the sound of the boom, boom, boom drums. But we were forced to close our windows in the evening to help drown out the percussion sounds. Good bye trade winds.

We inadvertently left a few items in the room upon departure. We were quickly contacted by email, and the management made arrangements to ship us our left-behind items. That gesture was much appreciated.

I went fishing on two charters. The captains picked me up right at the Matachica dock. Very convenient.
The chef made me a lunch from the red snapper I caught! Excellent!

I really liked this place. But despite all of its niceties, Ii'd try another venue next time. That music and those drums drove me nuts!

Room Tip: Try to stay as a far away from the dining area as possible...to escape the constant music and drums!

We stayed here in March 2014 for three nights. We wanted a best quality room and tried to book a Deluxe Beachfront for the whole time, but settled to switch on the final night for a regular Beachfront for the last night. Really, although the Deluxe was a bit larger (mainly in the bathroom and storage areas), we were just as happy with it and would recommend either room category as EXCELLENT. Large spacious rooms with sitting area, comfortable beds, nice bathrooms and beautiful locations on the beach.

Mata Chica is well situated AWAY from the hussle bussle of San Pedro which we didn't really bother with, and very close to the barrier reef for Snorkelling and Diving. We ate one dinner at the hotel, went once to the neighbouring Rojo bar (very good and fun) and another far offsite restaurant I'm not going to recommend. The dining at Mata Chica is great. The staff were all top notch, but the hotel could do a better job of picking up used glassware at poolside and beach. They come around to offer drinks at the beach, but not very frequently. Sometimes no one was at the bar when we came to see about a drink. All the staff is very friendly and seem equipped to deal with whatever you need.

Overall, the hotel is expensive but you get what you pay for don't you?? We did.

Room Tip: Beachfront and Deluxe Beachfront Casitas are both excellent

My husband and I stayed here March 2-9th. It was the best resort we have stayed at! The staff went over and beyond, the dining was fabulous!
The casitas were very pretty, clean and comfortable. Kayaking, snorkeling and floating down the river thru the caves were all wonderful.
When we left we felt that we had made true friends.
We will definitely go back next spring!

My wife and I just returned from a week at Matachica to celebrate her birthday. We both heartily believe that the resort is a unique experience offering great food, lodging, rest and rejuvenation in probably the most friendly and accommodating atmosphere anywhere. We have traveled a great deal over the years staying at a number of great hotels and resorts. Matachica goes toe to toe with any and all of them without appearing to try that hard; in fact, it does so with an easy, accommodating ambience that wraps itself around your overall and minute by minute needs or desires. The staff are the friendliest you will ever find. Examples: kudos to Abbie, Pahola, Adam, and Chris for providing exceptional service at Mambo (the restaurant), poolside, and the reef. Numerous others did the same throughout our stay. Mambo's lunch and dinner offerings were marvelous. Strongly recommend as appetizers the tenderloin and red snapper carpaccio, the bruschetta, and the spicy shrimp. For entrees, the pasta and fish dishes are preferable to the chicken, beef, or pork chop options. For breakfast, there are two options for the included continental offering. Both are good, but don't be afraid to wander off for alternative offerings like banana pancakes and Belgian waffles. Tropical drinks are varied and delicious. My wife loved the coconut mojitos in particular which began at dockside when we first arrived. The pool area is beautiful and uncrowded with access to WIFi for those tempted to keep track of the world's doings. My suggestion: Leave the iPad in the casita and relax poolside with a cold drink and book.
The boat trip to the reef and Shark Alley is worthwhile. Chris did a nice job leading the snorkeling expedition at both places. We love to snorkel, but you need to work a little to get to the reef where snorkeling is best. A 20 minute kayak ride gets you to the reef off the resort. You need to be able to get in and out a kayak, and snorkel in tidal conditions. This is not the Virgin Islands or St Lucia where you can snorkel right off the beach in calm conditions. Also, if you are looking for white, sandy beaches with swimming right there, this isn't the place. Ecological concerns outweigh that opportunity so eel grass dominates next to the beach though there is a cleared area farther out on the dock in which to swim. Do take a bike ride on the beach to see more of the island (and you will get an idea of how special the resort is compared to other locations). There are a number of trips and activities that involve going back to the mainland. We opted not to take the time and effort to do so. Others who did so said they enjoyed them. Which brings me to the biggest drawback which has nothing to do with the resort itself. Belize City airport is a small, slow-moving affair that challenges both patience and body temperature. Both coming and going the lines at customs were ridiculously crowded and slow. The connecting flights to and from San Pedro airport are fine once you get on them. Though again on return that airport was a crowded mess as well. The town of San Pedro itself is not very attractive but worth a half day visit for the few shops and restaurants that are worth visiting. The casitas (huts) at the resort are wonderful. The bed is comfortable set up on a pedestal with a view out the louvered windows and doors. The bathroom is spacious and well appointed. We stayed on the beach in one of the regular casitas which provided a great breeze off the water so we never used the available air conditioning. Great views especially at sunrise. This is a great place for newlyweds, and couples of any age as long as you are somewhat in shape if you want to bike, snorkel, or take side trips. We like to move around and try new places, but we will be back a few years down the road to feel paradise again.

I've traveled to 29 foreign countries. In many of them, I stayed in luxury hotels. But, I never enjoyed any as much as the 8-night stay that my wife and I experienced at Belize's Matachica Resort & Spa in January 2014. We opted for a deluxe beachfront casita. It was worth the extra money. Yet, no matter which lodging one chooses, the service will always be 1st class. Prepare to be pampered! The entire staff (hotel, restaurant, and bar) truly enjoy their jobs, and it thrills them when they see their guests enjoying themselves. By the end of our stay, we felt as if we were among family. (We continue to stay in touch with several by e-mail.) And, let's don't overlook the absolutely superb Mambo Restaurant on the premises. Their dishes, particularly the wide variety of fresh seafood dishes, are among the best ever. Don't forget to top off the evening with a trip to the bar for a Cuban cigar with Belize's famous "1 Barrel" rum. For us, it was the perfect (albeit somewhat delayed) honeymoon getaway--and the vacation of a lifetime. Fond, fond memories! -- "Horangi"

Room Tip: It's worth the extra to have a luxury casita on the beach! Yet, given the arrangement of casita...
