We just spent 5 days at one of the nicest places we've ever been. 5 days with no television, phone, very limited internet connection (WiFi is provided in the resort - not the rooms) and my cell phone on airplane mode and it was awesome.

The staff were the nicest people and fantastic service.

We can't wait to come back.

The location of Mata Chica is amazing. It sits directly on the beach with the most incredible lounging spaces on the dock.

The staff were all incredibly friendly and helpful. They rake the sand several times/day to keep it pretty! The housekeeping does an excellent job to keep the rooms clean and with fresh water morning and night. The restaurant staff were exceptional. The food was excellent with good variety.

The reef diving is unsurpassed. We enjoyed 3 days diving, including The Blue Hole. True gem!

The WIFI went down for 2 days and there's no TV or entertainment, so it's up to you to create fun.

Mata Chica is a little piece of paradise.

Matachica delivers on the promise, it is a truly romantic resort, not the 5 star all inclusive type, but more the upscale 4 star eco style. So the amenities aren't fancy, but all the rooms are kept very clean and they are spacious, authentic and beautifully set around the pool or facing the beach. All of them are smartly placed so you have great privacy. Of course the beach front ones are quite unique but also the second row is only a few steps of the beach and you will see the ocean from your porch, actually they I'd recommend those (they call them reef view) as they are a bit more secluded. We ate a few times in the restaurant but also took the boat to go to San Pedro. All in all this resort offers a quiet and relaxed holiday setting with friendly staf and a well maintained property. Again, don't expect massive luxury, it wouldn't fit there, just go with the flow and you will love it.

We stayed in the "Plum" cottage which was Oceanfront and a great view from the patio. I will start with the positives, the staff were amazing and super friendly and just couldn't have been nicer or couldn't have tried harder to please. The location is perfect a lot of ocean front rooms and the food is excellent in the restaurant. They have a great boardwalk with loungers for two and it is really nice to just chill out on these with a cold drink and watch the ocean.
The resort is five miles from town and there are two ways to get to town, the option by road I would not recommend, there are potholes in the road that are crazy and while this is dangerous by daylight it would be suicidal to try it by night. The other option is to travel in by boat (the resort boat travels in a few times each day) and there is also a water taxi. We generally went into town around 5:30pm on the hotel boat and came back at night by water taxi, the water taxi is $10 each USD. The problem with the water taxi is the boat captains seem to be trying to break a speed record and it is a really bumpy ride even in calm water.
Once back at the resort there was little to do, there is a bar but no entertainment and there is no TV's in the rooms, there is also no WIFI in the rooms only in the lobby area. I know this is meant to make sure you unplug but I found it off putting. The light is so dim in the rooms its even hard to read.
San Pedro is a small town (three streets) so apart from gift shops, bars and restaurants there isn't much else to do.
But overall I rate this hotel highly, if you want to go somewhere to unplug and just enjoy the beautiful water and maybe the friendliest people in the world Matachica is a great place. Just keep in mind that the rooms while quaint and have a great view, there is not really anything there to entertain you.
Last but not least the mosquitos are bad or at least they were while we were there.

Room tip: Splurge for Oceanfront its worth the price

The resort is top notch as our the people that work there. They become friends while you are there. The casitas are very nice. We had a iguana we named iggy who lived in our thatched roof.
The grounds are immaculate.
The Mambo restaurant has excellent food, not inexpensive but very good.
The resort is a ways from town and is not always an easy boat commute there. You can try and ride with the resort staff when they go or take the water taxi at its times.

Room tip: The reef view rooms really do not have a reef view. So not worth the cost.
