Mata Rocks is a small hotel south of San Pedro in a quiet neighborhood, with easy access to town and a dock where you can be picked up by boat for trips. Safes and refrigerators provided. Bikes are available to ride around the island and to the Mayan ruin of Marco Gonzalez. The small bar serves both continental breakfast and afternoon/evening drinks. The staff were very friendly and helpful with everything from recommendations for trips and meals as well as guest needs. We would go back in a heartbeat.

Staff have worked there a long time so are very attentive as they must enjoy their work and be reasonably looked after to stay their so long and it shows, we had a balcony superior which was nice loads of room for the 2 of us, it also has a microwave, so I cheated at breakfast and took down scrambled eggs to have with the complimentary continental breakfast the hotel offers. The bar is quite Cody and everyone gets to chat, closes at 9pm though so great during the day and for pre dinner drinks, happy hour between 6 and 7pm. Free bicycles are available which is a very nice touch. Each room also has a diary or log book where guests could leave comments and advise on what to do or where to eat, it is a great idea to get actual guest reviews in room. Will definitely recommend Mata Rocks

Room Tip: If you can stretch to it get a balcony room, although pool sides are nice you are much more private...

This was our third trip to Belize and Mata Rocks in four years. It is refreshing to see the same friendly staff that we've come to know on a first name basis. The beachside location is a managable walk from town or you can grab one of the free bicycles or rent a golf cart if you are so inclined. Eustavio in the office will gladly set up any activity available from scuba diving, snorkeling with nurse sharks, cave tubing, myan ruins visits, sunset sailing ect.... that you may be interested in. One of the staff even gave me a fishing tip that allowed me to catch my first Tarpon from shore less than a 5 minute bike ride away (Thanks Kareem)
Sherilynn and Chriselda close the on site Tiki bar around 9:00pm ensuring you can get a good nights sleep for your next days adventure. If you want a little more night life a short walk down the beach you will find several beach bars that offer everything from a chcken drop, karoke, to live music. We have never felt unsafe on midnight strolls along the beach.
All in all Mata Rocks is a quaint, clean, quiet, comfortable base of operations for any Belizan adventures you may wish to activeties partake in.
P.S. My apologies to the staff I know I mispelled thier names, but wanted to recognize the individuals in appreciation for making our vacations memorable

Room Tip: Upper suites offer more space . Lower rooms are smaller, but poolside

Matarocks has its location going for it which is on the less noisy outskirts of San Pedro and on the beach. The hotel itself is a decent value for the money but nothing special. There is no restaurant on site, only a beach bar which also serves continental breakfast, consisting of inexpensive sweet rolls, fruit, coffee and juice. Luckily there a many restaurants in walking distance, including "The Bakery" for pastries and sandwiches and located on the street towards town. Matarocks' personnel tends to be helpful and friendly, however, I will probably chose a different location the next time on Ambergris Caye.

Room Tip: We booked last minute to copy the itinerary of a family member and got a corner room by the pool of...

We have stayed at MR 4 times, and traveled thoughout Belize extensivly. MR is a nice, straight forward beach hotel on Ambergris Caye, it's not quite touristy, but clean, nice and small. It is not a amreican style fancy resort. The staff and on site owners have always been polite, and once engaged quite friendly. The beach bar "Squirrel's Nest" is a nice example of a your typical beach bar. Breakfast is what it is, not much but something to get you going. The walk to town is not long. San Pedro overall has grown tremendously in the past decade, but is still asafe desgnation where "the show" has yet to arrive. It is not Hawaii, so dont expect that. Mata Rocks is a good Belize Resort / Hotel, with a soild long term staff.

We had the best room in this 17-room hotel --Suite 6. It is the closest suite to the ocean (pretty much ON the beach, has a deck facing the ocean and the main door facing the pool. The room was beautiful, very clean, has an in-room safe if you feel safer that way. Little kitchen, two-seater table, couch/coffee table and a king size bed.

The hotel has its own small piece of beach with chairs, and a small, shallow pool with more chairs and a beach bar.

The hotel offers a complimentary continental breakfast at the beach bar. I do want to remind guests though: this is a CONTINENTAL breakfast NOT A BUFFET. One day we didn't get any food after the breakfast was open for only 20 min because people were going back for thirds. So please be respectful.

We borrowed bikes (for free) from the hotel and road around the island. The bikes are very well maintained and all hotel staff were friendly and accommodating.

Location: perfect. Not in the hustle and bustle of San Pedro, just a 25 min walk away which is perfect. Great options for eating/buying food and booze nearby too.

Room Tip: I'm sure any room would be perfect. All have an ocean and pool view.

We just spent 8 nights at Mata Rocks.
Here`s the good stuff.
Location. Although it is a mile out of town, it's an easy walk either on the main road or by beach to San Pedro. Bicycles are also available from the front desk to sign out for free. Our room was a suite with a lovely view of the ocean right in front of the small pool. The air conditioner in our room was very efficient and quiet. The resort was exceptionally clean including rooms, pool and beach area. You could always find shade and a beach chair. Staff are very friendly and will arrange tours, golf cart rentals even book you a massage or dinner reservation.

The Bad:
Breakfast was a disappointment. You get your choice of white bread for toast, sweet rolls, fresh fruit, fresh squeezed orange juice and coffee. Although breakfast is served 7:30 - 9:30 am, if you arrive anytime past 8:30 all the fruit, and very often the coffee, orange juice and sweet rolls were gone . They did not add more fruit or sweet rolls but would make more coffee or orange juice if you requested it. We usually ended up going down the road to `The Baker`` which was only a 5 minute walk away and treated ourselves to delicious breakfast egg and bacon croissant or fresh cinnamon rolls.

The ugly:
What ruined an otherwise good experience was discovering cockroaches in our room on two separate occasions. Additionally, the housekeeping staff came and went in and out of our room while cleaning it and frequently left the keys in the lock on the outside of the door. This meant anyone could come and go freely into our room which did result in us being robbed of cash, jewellery and even a bottle of hairspray( if you can believe it) .We reported the robbery to front desk staff who said they would let the Manager know. We never heard back from the front desk staff, nor the Manager. The housekeeping staff continued to leave keys in the doors leaving our room open and exposed throughout our stay. We also noticed they did this to other guest`s rooms as well.

If our housekeeping-robbery issue had been addressed I would have rated Mata Rocks much higher as it has a lot to offer for a small hotel.
