“Great Place, Great Service, Great Staff”

My wife and I stayed at Mata Rocks Resort for 7 nights and had a wonderful experience. The rooms were clean and comfortable and the staff is excellent. The location makes it an easy walk to downtown San Pedro. We found it best to walk the beach, rather than the street. It was shady and cool, while the street could be quite warm. The girls at the Squirrel's Nest Bar at the hotel are terrific and can furnish quite helpful information about local restaurants and activities. The continental breakfast is alright but we walked to town almost every morning and ate breakfast at Estelle's. She is the queen of eggs. The diving is fabulous, the best we've ever experienced. You must do Shark Ray Alley. When we go back to Belize we will again choose Mata Rocks.

Mata Rocks was a very nice place to stay, we were only there for 2 days so hard to get a real feel for the place the staff were very accomodating to us with a late checkout our last day because of scuba as there was no one coming into the room after we left.
I do feel that I was taken advantage of at the bar, drinks were unbelievably expensive, but I didn't want to make a big deal out of it. My reccomendation would be to buy your booze in town and keep it in the fridge.
Sadly the weather for us was not nice when we were here, so we didn't go into the water once except for scuba, which was amazing!

We prepaid a four-night stay in advance, arrived at Mata Rocks and were told we would have to spend the first night in a different hotel, repack and move again the following day. Now, the hotel they "walked" us to was very nice (a suite), and the Mata Rocks owner upgraded us to a junior suite for the remaining three nights. In fairness, all the good reviews are essentially correct for this hotel. But I can't recommend a place where they require 100% prepayment and then don't hold a room for you.

Stayed for a week and was not disappointed in any way. Had read all of the great reviews in Trip Advisor, and that is what prompted us to book at Mata Rocks. Hotel was super clean, and the Squirrels Nest bar had the best meat pies around. Staff was great, and helped to arrange any type of activity you would want. Any water sports you booked, the boat would come to the dock right at the hotel. The place was just far enough from town to have just the right amount of quiet, but certainly close enough to take walks to and from town alone the beach, with plent of bars to hit all along the way.

As resorts go, this is not a service first place, but I really had no trouble doing everything from this home base. Dodging hurricanes on the way down and back, I was quite pleased with the spectacular beach front view. The 2nd floor room was quiet and had a lovely view and best of all the A.C. cranked well. If I needed an extra towel or toilet tissue, I went to the desk and asked. There are no phones in rooms. Had no problem with my cell phone on Caye. The one thing we missed is having a container to put ice in, and it always had to be bought from a store. The freezer in room is tiny, but works fine. The office was good about exchanging our dollars. Some very basic groceries are somewhat hard to find, but there are plenty of stores as you wind into town. Walking into town is close enough but biking a bit rough on the cobble stones.

Being on the edge of the off season with some things closed on the Ambergris Caye, I did not expect much and we did all our dining else where. I contacted a local for a lovely meal catered to us right on the beach, which the owners did not seem to mind.

You should not expect prompt service really anywhere as the locals all say "You are on Island time, man." There were a few times I would not see anyone at the bar and had to wait. The owners left for their orgin homeland towards the end of our stay.

We rented our gas powered golf cart and ventured far North through town and far South as well. Best meal was at "Hidden Treasure". Their rental fee was reasonable compared to others.

Having reached the "fifty" milestone and just received my diving certification, I used a different dive operation then most. They picked me up at the pier every day and brought me back. When you returned there was always someone at the pool to compare notes with.

We sat out late one night and watched a beautiful storm blow in. Walking security was always near by, so you felt safe even alone. We also had constant breezes most of the time and window/patio doors were across from each other, nice. Also, the bed was very comfortable.

If you are not looking for anything but basic comfort, spectacular view, clean and charming atmosphere, this is the place. You are situated within a quick ride to the airport to soak up every last minute.

I found most everyone including the Mata Rocks staff, helpful and friendly. The owners were on the sight quite a bit, sometimes with family in tow.

I hope you look at my pictures as they are the best pitch for visiting this lovely escape.

Spent a wonderful week at the Mata Rocks Resort. Believe what previous guests have said. It is all true. The hotel is immaculately clean. There is always someone sweeping the pool deck or raking the beach. The women who work at the Squirrel's Nest Bar are the "go to gals" for booking side trips, ordering take out, and about anything else you want to do in Ambergris Caye. You can also meet some of the locals at the Squirrel's Nest bar. It's a fun place. They even have a book of menus from all the local restaurants so you can check out where you want to eat. When someone's diving trip was canceled, the bartender found another group to take them within the hour. They also recommended George and his wooden sailboat, the Rum Punch 2, for a wonderful day of snorkeling and the most delicious barbecue lunch. Try it.
Everyone on Ambergris gets around by golf cart or bicycles. There are bikes that you can sign out for free at Mata Rocks. We spent the day touring the island. Because you are about a mile or so from the hustle and bustle of San Pedro most people walk the beach to one of the many good restaurants. It's a safe area. For a no frills fun vacation, there is no place better.

  • Liked — The good advice of the women at the Squirrel's Nest Bar
  • Disliked — Our room was a bit small

Despite the overall hustle and bustle of San Pedro Town, Mata Rocks is a wonderful little chill zone. The rooms are simple, but very clean. The pool and deck are absolutely gorgeous and the blue chairs on the sand are heaven. Given all the bar options in San Pedro, the Squirrel's Nest Bar is a nice on-site option, but if you stay for several days, you'll likely want to get away most nights (and it shuts down by 9:00). Breakfast is spartan and if you plan on doing any diving or snorkeling, you'll want to find something more substantial. Regarding the tours, there are deals to be had in town or in Belize City. Unless you are willing to pay for the convenience, shop around. Same goes for the internet or any of the goods in the office. The bikes are the best and make you feel like a local. Make sure you use them! We would certainly stay there again!
