“Great value and location”
Reviewed 15 May 2014 via mobile

A group of six adults stayed here for a week in February. We really liked it! The rooms were nice and big, the location was great, and the staff was friendly.
It is not the Marriott, it is a basic bed-and-breakfast type hotel. But it was clean and suited our needs perfectly. There was a nice breakfast every morning that was included in the room price, and it was right on the beach. The beach is a little small, but we still had lots of fun. We walked to town many days, as it was just a 2 or 3 minute walk.
We felt very safe here, as the staff kept a close eye on things.
Over all I would recommend staying here if you want a good location while staying within a budget.

This little gem is lovely and clean and very well located to town, just a few minutes walk down the beach to some fabulous restaurants (we ate at Caramba and Elvi's Kitchen while staying here). Wet Willy's is right out in front of the hotel at the end of the dock. We rented a golf cart one day to explore, and also spent an afternoon on Caye Caulker, the terminal for the water taxi being just down the beach from Blue Tang.
We had room 9, which had a breathtaking view and overlooked the pool, which is small but clean and private. The complimentary breakfast each morning was fine but not great. Overall we were happy with our 3 nights here.

This is perhaps the best combination of benefits on the island. I don't want to be unfair to the other hotels since I didn't stay at any, but I was absolutely impressed with the Blue Tang, and especially when compared with *all* the other places around it on that side of the island.

Rather than hide all my points in prose, I'm going to lay out all the benefits of staying here in bullet points. Note that anything I list is in contrast to other hotels which do not have these features:

- Beach. Surprise! Many of the hotels, ironically the ostensibly nicer ones, are ocean-view only. They sit behind a long retaining wall; guests must walk to another location to experience the water. Not at the Blue Tang, which has a nice, well-kept beach right in front of the property.
- One minute from two local grocery stores. We walked several times a day to the corner grocery (not a tiny convenience store, but a real grocer) for odds and ends, and this is a life saver.
- Wet Willie's is right there. Willie's has good food and a fine setting for drinks over the water, and it's so close it feels like it's the hotel restaurant. The ABC - actually a restaurant which is slow but has amazing burgers - is also right there.
- Other bar/restaurants are at great walking distance. By which I mean, a nice evening stroll to dinner is usually welcome and there are probably a solid dozen decent-to-good places to eat within 10 minutes' walk.
- Enclosed play area. This safe haven for children or to lounge around in hammocks is clutch
- Top Deck. Great view of the ocean (and rooftops of surrounding hotels with no decks)

There's also excellent service; staff helped us with anything that came up including air travel.

If you're looking for opulence the Blue Tang isn't for you. True, the rooms are beautiful, and indeed the top-floor rooms are incredible if you must be pampered, but the experience isn't about that. It's about what you can do if you stay here, and the answer is that Blue Tang is a great balanced location that makes it easy to eat, drink, lounge, rest, tour, walk, play, etc without having to struggle against transportation on the island, or being too central and drowning in the crowd.

Many people rent golf carts on the island. If you stay at the Blue Tang, you won't want one.

I had been to Ambergris Caye almost 30 years ago and knew the island had changed. So rather than stay at one of the larger locales , I wanted our family to stay in a smaller more intimate inn that would hopefully match the friendliness and care that I had experienced before the tourism boom. The Blue Tang Inn turned out to be a wonderful choice. It started with a lot of patient help by Kristin as we coordinating our evolving plans. Located at the north end of town, the Blue Tang is quiet but still a short beach walk to the restaurants and other activities of San Pedro. The rooms are large and the kitchenettes are a definite bonus. The staff were always helpful but didn't overwhelm you with attentiveness. The beds were comfortable though might benefit from a pillowtop cover soon. The pool and rooftop deck were very nice and at night the rooftop deck was especially nice in the cool evening breezes. We did a half-day snorkeling trip on the Inn's sailboat, the Sirena Azul. Adolfo and Milo were talkative and exuberant guides on this trip. They weren't able to easily accommodate our request for an all day snorkel trip but we were able to easily arrange this with another company just down the beach. Overall a great location for our trip to Ambergris Caye.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 5 which has an ocean view but is shaded by palm trees which kept it cool.

The Blue Tang's rooftop deck is absolutely the best place in town to watch sunsets and sunrises. Head up there, bring beers and watch the pelicans and frigate birds fly past, or gaze at the stars.

The Tang is right around the corner from shops and restaurants but just off the main street so it's quieter. However, just so you know, "Wet Willies" has ladies night on Wednesdays which is a good time to put in your ear plugs...seriously.

During our stay, we ended up switching from Room 14 to Room 9. Room 14 wasn't bad, but it's hard to resist a balcony with hammock so we decided to pay a little extra. Room 9 has a nice unobstructed view and we loved leaving the windows open to let the breeze flow through. The furnishings and fixtures in the rooms are a bit dated and I hope the owners decide to modernize as it would greatly increase the appeal of this hotel.

Concerning service, all of the staff were helpful, from the cleaning crew to the office crew. Management (Allan and Fanny) were usually available to answer questions, arrange tours and handle problems or requests. My only disappointment was that we couldn't get on the Blue Tang's sail boat. It was chartered the first two nights and then it was apparently too windy for sailing so you may want to plan ahead if you want to go out on their boat.

For those that like to cook, most of the rooms have full kitchens with toasters, blenders, dishes, etc. There are ants so you'll want to keep your food in the refrigerator at all times. We left yummy banana bread out and the next morning it was covered with the little buggers.

One of the things we really liked is the complimentary breakfast, consisting of fruit, toast, cereal, coffee, juice and usually pancakes, French toast or DIY waffles (you pour batter and wait). They have everything you need to fortify yourself before going out snorkeling, diving or biking.

The Tang's small pool is convenient for kids since the nearby beach isn't really swimmable (unless you like wading through sea grass). I thought the pool was over chlorinated so I didn't spend a lot of time in it. When we wanted to cool off, we simply swam off the dock.

All in all, the Blue Tang was sufficient for our needs and budget. It's in a convenient location, has lots of amenities and friendly, helpful service. If we come to Ambergris Caye again, we'll probably stay on the north end of the island, or stay on Caye Caulker for something different.

Room Tip: Room 4 (facing pool) is right next to the breakfast area so it will be noisy for those who like to s...

We go to San Pedro several times a year and have stayed in various places. We really liked the location of the Blue Tang. It is far enough away from the night clubs that it is quiet at night. It is close enough to everything that a 10 minute walk on the beach gets you to most destinations. It is located on a quiet stretch of beach on the edge of town. Behind the hotel is a local neighborhood. On the weekends, local kids jump off of a neighboring dock, and others play soccer on the adjacent beach. Certainly it is possible to find quieter places, but we love the people of San Pedro and enjoy seeing their kids being kids.

Our room was very clean and comfortable. It had a nice kitchenette and a wonderful whirlpool tub just right for warming up after a long day of diving. Our only complaint was that the bed was a bit squeaky. The linens were clean and the housekeepers were unobtrusive, but thorough. The AC was flawless.

Check in was very efficient and we were met at the San Pedro air strip by the hotel's driver. We left Philadelphia at 6am and were diving that afternoon. What more could you want?

The pool was under construction during our stay, so we did not use it. The roof deck is a great look out, but there is no shade up there at all, so we visited it only briefly to avoid being burned.

Our room did not have a view, but the view from the balcony outside our room was fabulous. The reef breaks about 1/4 mile from shore in front of the property.

There is not bar or restaurant on the property, but several are within a few foot steps of the gate.

Overall, Blue Tang has a great vibe, nice accommodations, and represents a fantastic value.

Room Tip: I might shy away from a room that is on the ground level along the public street. It might be a bit...

I can't say enough about the staff at Blue Tang. They are an excellent working team and went out of their way to make us as comfortable as possible. Fanny, Alan,Eric ,Nelson,Adolfo,Milo,Blanca, Imelda and Carmen were caring and very attentive to all our needs. We will be forever grateful to them. Although we did not meet the night security, we are thankful that he was there for us. The facility is very comfortable. Although the plunge pool is small, it afforded a cooling off. We would not hesitate to stay there again. We miss it already. A special hug goes out to Fanny who was very considerate and understanding.
