“Great location, super staff and fantastic diving”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 November 2013

We loved The Tides. It's on a great location, not too close to downtown San Pedro, but close enough to walk on the beach to all the restaurants and bars. The staff is great and always in for a chat, even the cat and dog. And don't forget Patojo's scuba center: great diving with Alex and Patojo who know the reef like their own backyard. The only thing missing is a bar and a closeby restaurant for breakfast and lunch.

We stayed at The Tides from Oct 3rd – 12th, we were part of a group of 8. The resort delivered exactly what was expected. Our rooms were clean and served their purpose, we don’t spend very much time in the room, we had “The Blue Hole” room, top floor last room to the North. I read the 3 reports that were rated terrible and they are humorous. First, Patojo is the best Dive Master I’ve ever dived with, yes he does have to take the boat over a very choppy area to get out to the dives, but anyone who has driven a boat will realize the skill needed to pull that off without damaging the boat and passengers, he did a stand up job. The once we were in the water, he would point out sea life that I know I would have missed if not for him, he takes the time to make sure you have a great dive. We had as many as 6 divers and listened to his instructions and every diver was top notch, Turtles, Sharks, Eagle Ray, Moray Eels, Dolphins, we seen them all because of Patojo. He would also join us poolside at night and tell us about his life on the island and his diving experiences, he has 30 years people, listen up.

The staff, Eden is quite competent, she planned 2 excursion for our group, one group went zip lining and the other to the Blue Hole, she handled the many question that we threw at her and she had to make multiple phone calls to sort it all out for us and our trips went off perfectly. Megan and Arian made up the remainder of the staff that week, we had the pleasure of them delivering our breakfast each morning, always making sure had what we needed and also taking any special requests for tomorrows breakfast. Some wanted eggs prepared in a certain ways and some were non meat eaters, breakfast is the only meal you can get from the resort which is perfect since we could eat and head out for the dive.

The Tides is very nice, if you expect fitted sheets and big fluffy pillows this place is not for you. But if you want a fictional room with an ocean view and a pool 20 feet away and Dive with most likely the best Dive Master on the island then this is the resort for you.

Room Tip: The Blue Hole room is furthest from the School if you like to sleep in.

Length of stay - Oct 3 - 12, 2013. There were 8 in our group (6 divers/2 non-divers). The Tides is a very nice family place to stay. Rooms where clean, fresh paint, and overall nice décor. Each room has satellite TV and a small refrigerator. AC worked well. WiFi worked very well. Pool was very nice as is the surrounding deck. Plenty of chairs and loungers. Eden, Meagan, and Arian (3 of the 5 daughters) are great. Meagan and Arian brought us breakfast every morning poolside and was catered to our limited needs. They maintained the rooms and are a pleasure to be around... Eden is wonderful...She coordinated our excursions made sure we had everything we needed. I can't say enough things about all three. They truly made the trip exceptional. There is very limited beach, but you can sit as the pool and are approximately 25' from the ocean. We swam and snorkeled at the end of the pier which is where the dive shop is located. But really spent most of you time poolside after our dives.

Restaurants and shopping are within a 2 - 10 min walk. Plenty of places to get any type of groceries you desire.

Diving....Great. Patojo is an outstanding dive master. Dolphins, nurse sharks, reef sharks, turtles, eels, rays, lobster, crab, etc. Every dive was a new experience. He would find things the average dive master probably wouldn't. I can't say enough about Patojo. At the end of each dive, he assisted with removing all of our gear prior to climbing into the boat. Alex...WOW. He made the diving extremely easy. He setup, loaded, and cleaned our gear everyday. When he wasn't working with us diving, he was at poolside assisting.

There are way too many good things to say about The Tides, the family, and the diving. If you have any questions or need additional information, feel free to send me message.

Room Tip: Top floor has the best view and breeze, but the first floor room is very convenient.

We enjoyed our stay at the Tides. The room was clean and the only time we really spent there was to sleep at the end of the night. A/C didn't work very well in our room but again we didn't spend much time for it to really bother us. Pool looked clean and saw a few people swimming but we peferred to swim in the ocean right off the dock out front of the hotel. Can't say enough about location of this place. Walking distance to all kinds of restaraunts/bars ect. We took a walk up to Palapas bar which was about 30-45 mins walking on the beach but didn't mind the time since the scenary was so nice. I would definely recommend this hotel if you are not looking for all the frills of a resort but just want a clean bed to crash in. Also, look for "fish johnson" who cleans the grounds in the mornings. He has some great tips for enjoying your stay. Oh and a side note the pool bar never opened the whole time we were there but wasn't much of an inconveince since there were sooo many places within a 5 min walk.

This was my fist time visiting Belize and Ambergris Caye. I went to help a friend celebrate his 50th birthday and had the best time!. Elmer "Patojo" Paz was very friendly and helpful with doing only my 12th dive! After our check out dive he sat down with all of us and explained how to manage my buoyancy better! Got to see many beautiful fish and saw my partner have a nurse shark swim between her legs as she was starting to kneel on the sea floor! We all laughed about her surprised look when she looked down to see a shark between her legs! Also got to see a sea turtle, spider crab, and to many other fish to name!!! Very relaxing and enjoyable Dive!!! The tides is not a "5-star" hotel, but was very affordable for a bed to sleep on! (Only time we were in our room!). the Location was perfect, and almost everything with in walking distance and only a short 10 minute ride from the airport!!! Will be staying here again!

The Tides Beach Resort is unlike most resorts in San Pedro and Ambergris Caye for two reasons: 1) The cost per night is much less than most resorts. Instead of $200+ USD per night, this is closer to $80 USD after taxes. 2) The resort is run by a local family, not expatriates or foreign investors. We enjoyed our stay at the Tides Beach, though we'd classify it as a hotel, not a resort.

The only reason for not giving the resort a 5-star review is that the accommodations have not been updated, and this may not appeal to other travelers. The rooms are still comfortable, but they are not for everyone. Replacing the flooring, wall paint, curtains, and a few furnishings would make a considerable difference in the room's comfort level.

In spite of the rooms needing a little makeover, I'd recommend this resort for several reasons, though. 1) Support a local family. 2) Enjoy the small pool and deck right on the beach. 3) Get your exercise walking or biking to restaurants or other establishments on the island. It's not right in the heart of San Pedro, but it was a 10-minute walk to most places we wanted to see. Just watch out for the golf carts! 4) If you're a snorkeler or scuba diver, the scuba center is right in front of the hotel. 5) Compared to the other hotels on the island, this is one of the best places to stay for the price.

The Tides Beach has great potential to be the small hotel of choice on Ambergris Caye. I hope the owners are able to secure some funding to make the needed upgrades and continue serving the visitors of beautiful Ambergris Caye for years to come.

I had a great time here! Wonderful location with a pool and clean rooms. Great price for a great stay, highly recommended! I really enjoyed the people who worked here and although you didn't get clean sheets each day - the room got cleaned each day. I can't say enough about how great of a location this place is to diving (patojo's dive shop out front), food (super markets nearby and lots of restaurants) and activities.
