“A little disappointed”
Reviewed 16 July 2013

The hotel was recommended to us by someone at San Pedro. When we reviewed the hotel on the website it looked much better than when we arrived. The staff was very nice and helpful, but the overall condition of the facility was not as expected. The kitchen was not very clean. The burner pans on the stove were very ditry and we cleaned them to the best of our ability. but finally lined them with aluminum foil prior to use. The towels in the bathroom were torn and ragged . The kitchen utinsels were were poor and pots and pans dirty.

The beach was covered with seaweed and never raked up and disposed of during out 8 day stay. Beach lounge chairs cushions were torn .

The restaurant was closed for the entire stay. The beach bar was nice with a variety of weekly activities.

The staff was the highlight of the stay and did what they could to accomodate our stay. Alberto at the front desk especially helpful as was Josie in housekeeping.

At the end of the day the hotel was not as represented.

Room Tip: Std room only has A/C in bedroom. Deluxe room are better has central A/C ! Recommend a room that is...

My boyfriend and I bought the five night living social deal that included breakfast, a snorkeling trip and round trip airport transportation. I had been to Belize City once on a cruise and knew of Ambergris Caye because I'm a scuba diver. I read the reviews on here before deciding to purchase the Living Social deal - and they were all accurate.
You can walk to the hotel from the airport but only half of the distance has a sidewalk so it would be challenging to do so with a suitcase, a cab is $10 BZ ($5 US). Everyone at the resort is extremely friendly and helpful - from the office staff to the grounds crew (one in particular was great to us though I'm sad to admit I can't remember his name).
The layout of the rooms are great. The street can be a bit noisy with the golf carts and cars but once you are inside the half moon shape of the rooms/buildings it's quiet and serene. We stayed in room 2B. The a/c is only in the bedroom but with it and the ceiling fans it did a sufficient job of keeping the whole place at a decent temperature. It was loud but drowned out any music from the bar. It was clean and well stocked. We cooked our meals in a few times and had everything that we needed to do so. The best grocery store that we went to was Island Supermarket across from the Beliken distributor about 1/2 way to the airport. It was well stocked, bright, clean and organized. There are a couple produce stands in either direction of the hotel.
We had breakfast every day at George's (except Tuesday when they were closed - most of the restaurants had one day that they were not open) and George and his wife were very nice and the food was yummy (especially the fry jacks which I was sad to have waited until the last day to try).
The office staff helped us schedule our snorkeling trip, fishing trip and to rent a golf cart. They also suggested places to dive with and I went with Ecologic. We had some rain on the days that we were getting picked up at the dock for our excursions and they were great in communicating between us and the vendor on the delays. Luckily we were still able to do everything we wanted as the rain didn't last all day.
The hotel also booked our flights on Tropic Air. The views from the plane were awesome BUT they have signs at the check-in areas at both the Belize City airport and the San Pedro one stating they aren't responsible for loss or damage to items. I thought it was standard airport jargon but what it really is saying is that some of our employees are thieves and we don't care. Sometimes all the luggage doesn't fit on your flight so they bump your bag to the next flight (it arrives some 15-20 min later) but it is out of your control. This happened to my luggage and when I got it back to the hotel there was jewelry stolen out of it. I felt stupid for ignoring their signs but also angry that Tropic Air clearly does not care if their employees steal. I could tell they went through my bag on the way back as well by leaving parts unzipped but I had everything of value in my carry on at that point. So, my suggestion is take EVERYTHING out of value from your checked bag and carry it on or get a lock for that part of the trip. I told the hotel but with Tropic Air's clearly stated signs there wasn't anything I could do about it. That was the only negative part about the trip!
Having a beach bar on site was also a plus. They don't suggest walking around a lot (beach side or street side) after about 9 or 10 and we didn't want to take a cab all the time so we spent most evenings at Crazy Canuck's. Talk to the locals there for suggestions on restaurants. Blue Water Grill (north of the hotel by the airport) was our favorite but we had great food at all the places we tried. South of the hotel is Catamaran Beach Bar at another resort. It was small but fun with sand for the floor and amazing views. Not to mention Beliken on draft (the only place we found this and on the Friday we were there, 3 of them for $10 BZ)!
Walking along the beach from the hotel north to town is easy and surprisingly more direct than walking street side. A huge chunk of the distance has a sea wall or boardwalk making it easy to walk. Plus the view is better and you aren't breathing in the fumes of the golf carts.
If I ever get back to San Pedro it will be to do more diving and would love to stay at Exotic Caye again.

We were not impressed with the accommodation, although the staff went out of their way to make everything better by moving us into another room, brought us a microwave. The rooms need some attention, the refrigerator was rusty on the inside, the comforter was lumpy, the head board and night stands were dusty, and the pillows smelled. Again, the staff was great, very helpful and friendly. We were disappointed with the beaches, because of the trash and seaweed. Overall the island trip was ok.

This is a place where you can feel comfortable no matter who you are. The staff is very friendly and will help you anyway they can.
The Canuck's Beach Bar is on the beach with a great view of the reef and a major cut where the boats go outside the reef for fishing and diving. The bar even has cruthches avilable incase you hurt yourself whike dancing to the live music, as I did. Used then for a week to get around.
There is a small pool on property but is pleasant enough for a dip ,a little water arobics and lounging in the sun on the deck lounges.
There is a dive shop on the dock where you can book a trip to Hol Chan & Shark Ray Ally or fishing as well as other trips.

Room Tip: I like unit #2-B there is a king size bed, matching curtains and bedspread all in a fish theme. The...

My trip purpose to San Pedro was business, assessing hotels and restaurants for a service. So, having a critic type perspective, I write this review to assist in your decision of choice. (Stayed at Exotic Caye for 9-days.) Like yourself, I carefully reviewed hotel comments to determine the best place to stay. Rest assured, you’re now looking at the right hotel. The Exotic Caye Beach Resort will provide you a clean, comfortable, private, beautifully scenic beach front and secure area for which to enjoy/relax. You'll also be connected with reliable free 24-hour Internet, have a pool for a quick dip, daily maid service, small restaurant serving breakfast/lunch, and 1-minute away from a beach bar or across the street for live entertainment. In addition, 5-10 minutes away to a restaurant for fresh food. Most importantly, from the Owner, to the Hotel Manager, to the General Staff, you'll have an extremely competent and "hands on" team assuring you're fully satisfied. It is common to see the Owner or Hotel Manager pacing/inspecting the grounds to assure customer satisfaction. The sincerity of the Exotic Caye Team is great. In brief, the Exotic Caye Beach Resort is a solid choice for comfort and top value for the price. You cannot go wrong in selecting it for the place to stay in San Pedro. You will have everything needed to make your tropical vacation pleasurable and memorable. V. Torres

If you are looking for a Hilton, you're in the wrong place. You may... be in the wrong country.
Very basic facilities enhanced by very helpful staff and some partnerships with local businesses that allow ECBR to have a larger footprint than it is able to have independently.
Stayed here as part of a package that involved two local restaurants (George's Kitchen and Melt)< Crazy Kanuck's and the Fitness Club.
I never cooked there, there was a kitchen though. I would be wary putting more than 2 people in the suite I stayed in; only the bedroom is air conditioned.
Sleep quality was affected by AC unit and Karaoke from bar across the street, but not drastically.

We took advantage of a seven night offer through Groupon and were so pleased that we did. Having the taxes, transportation, breakfast, and activities included added to the value of our accommodations. The resort is a little older and more rustic but we enjoyed every minute! Reliable internet, a great beach, fantastic staff (we loved Josie), and perfect location added to our enjoyment on our vacation! Our unit was clean, beds were comfortable, and as two younger females on a budget vacation, we felt very safe. The live music at the beach bar provided great entertainment and we loved our daily breakfast at Melt. The walk to town is about 15 min, which made it very easy to tour around San Pedro by foot. We highly recommend this resort for anyone looking to maximize the vacation budget and able to look past a few outdated amenities. If you visit, say 'hi' to Jane the resort cat for us...she kept us company our entire trip, even sleeping at our door.

Room Tip: All of the rooms have an ocean view. If you are a lighter sleeper, you may want to ask for a room f...
