“Kind and caring about their customers!”

The exotic caye is in a great location right about the midway point on the southern part of San Pedro. It's a villa style hotel. We purchased their living social deal for 5 nights for our honeymoon, and we loved it!

The finishes, at least in our unit, were a little old and could use an update. But, that said, the room was clean and cozy. There was a refrigerator that kept water and fresh fruit (from the fruit stand up the street) cold. The pool is a great place to splash in and cool off. The bar (Canuck's) is a great place to hang out, meet locals, play trivia, and just have a great time.

While the facilities were cozy, the staff was great. They answered all of our questions previous to arriving in Belize. They helped us pick great excursions and made all of the arrangements. They gave us advice on what to stock in our rooms in case a storm kept folks in their rooms and out of the restaurants. They partner with great tour guides and excursion agencies, so everywhere we went on their recommendation was great.

Loved our time at the Exotic Caye Beach Resort!! Gaylynn at the Exotic Caye hooked us up on all the things to see and do, including a day boat trip fishing and a beach BBQ eating our catch after. The food at George's Kitchen, a few steps away from the resort, was always great, as well as at the on site Melt Café. The beach front bar, Crazy Canucks, has the best staff and entertainment nightly. We went on tour of the Mayan temples in Lamanai. It was an amazing trip and we will be back again next year!!!

I purchased the Living Social Deal which was a good value--three nights accommodations, very generous breakfast vouchers (Melt Restaurant onsite very good) and an awesome snorkel trip for two. Snorkel trip was through Blue Heaven dives, also dove with them, and would recommend. Wish we had stayed longer as getting there was expensive part. It was the right distance from center of town if you want to walk or bike or golf cart but be a little away from the busiest part. We walked on both beach and road with no problems. People complaining about the beach and seagrass which is a vital part of the ecosystem did not do their homework- and an amazing reef in such close proximity more than makes up for it. Saw tons of sharks, rays, Green Sea turtles and all the colorful reef fish. The managers/staff here, Kelly and Alberto, were extremely professional and helpful. Yes, it is not the Ritz but we weren't expecting that- room was clean and the well equipped kitchen allowed us to make some of our own drinks and snacks. Crazy Canuck's bar onsite was also very relaxed, friendly and reasonably priced. My only complaints about the trip were too short, American Airlines flight delay of four hours going over basically lost me my first afternoon (neither of these reflect on resort), and I didn't sleep well due to street noise especially golf carts but I am a light sleeper and it was a very busy weekend due to Costa Maya festival. The plane ride on Tropic Air was cool-- but I would consider doing water taxi if you have time (we did not) it is a more economical option and seems like it would also be fun.

good location with in walking distance to everything. Glaylynn (Staff member) really helped us get to know our way around, The bar and staff really made us feel at home.
The place is good for the area. There are not any name brand hotels on the island that is what makes it so nice You don't Find any McDonnalds or any Holiday Inn here. It is behind the times but that is what makes it so great!

The hotel was recommended to us by someone at San Pedro. When we reviewed the hotel on the website it looked much better than when we arrived. The staff was very nice and helpful, but the overall condition of the facility was not as expected. The kitchen was not very clean. The burner pans on the stove were very ditry and we cleaned them to the best of our ability. but finally lined them with aluminum foil prior to use. The towels in the bathroom were torn and ragged . The kitchen utinsels were were poor and pots and pans dirty.

The beach was covered with seaweed and never raked up and disposed of during out 8 day stay. Beach lounge chairs cushions were torn .

The restaurant was closed for the entire stay. The beach bar was nice with a variety of weekly activities.

The staff was the highlight of the stay and did what they could to accomodate our stay. Alberto at the front desk especially helpful as was Josie in housekeeping.

At the end of the day the hotel was not as represented.

My boyfriend and I bought the five night living social deal that included breakfast, a snorkeling trip and round trip airport transportation. I had been to Belize City once on a cruise and knew of Ambergris Caye because I'm a scuba diver. I read the reviews on here before deciding to purchase the Living Social deal - and they were all accurate.
You can walk to the hotel from the airport but only half of the distance has a sidewalk so it would be challenging to do so with a suitcase, a cab is $10 BZ ($5 US). Everyone at the resort is extremely friendly and helpful - from the office staff to the grounds crew (one in particular was great to us though I'm sad to admit I can't remember his name).
The layout of the rooms are great. The street can be a bit noisy with the golf carts and cars but once you are inside the half moon shape of the rooms/buildings it's quiet and serene. We stayed in room 2B. The a/c is only in the bedroom but with it and the ceiling fans it did a sufficient job of keeping the whole place at a decent temperature. It was loud but drowned out any music from the bar. It was clean and well stocked. We cooked our meals in a few times and had everything that we needed to do so. The best grocery store that we went to was Island Supermarket across from the Beliken distributor about 1/2 way to the airport. It was well stocked, bright, clean and organized. There are a couple produce stands in either direction of the hotel.
We had breakfast every day at George's (except Tuesday when they were closed - most of the restaurants had one day that they were not open) and George and his wife were very nice and the food was yummy (especially the fry jacks which I was sad to have waited until the last day to try).
The office staff helped us schedule our snorkeling trip, fishing trip and to rent a golf cart. They also suggested places to dive with and I went with Ecologic. We had some rain on the days that we were getting picked up at the dock for our excursions and they were great in communicating between us and the vendor on the delays. Luckily we were still able to do everything we wanted as the rain didn't last all day.
The hotel also booked our flights on Tropic Air. The views from the plane were awesome BUT they have signs at the check-in areas at both the Belize City airport and the San Pedro one stating they aren't responsible for loss or damage to items. I thought it was standard airport jargon but what it really is saying is that some of our employees are thieves and we don't care. Sometimes all the luggage doesn't fit on your flight so they bump your bag to the next flight (it arrives some 15-20 min later) but it is out of your control. This happened to my luggage and when I got it back to the hotel there was jewelry stolen out of it. I felt stupid for ignoring their signs but also angry that Tropic Air clearly does not care if their employees steal. I could tell they went through my bag on the way back as well by leaving parts unzipped but I had everything of value in my carry on at that point. So, my suggestion is take EVERYTHING out of value from your checked bag and carry it on or get a lock for that part of the trip. I told the hotel but with Tropic Air's clearly stated signs there wasn't anything I could do about it. That was the only negative part about the trip!
Having a beach bar on site was also a plus. They don't suggest walking around a lot (beach side or street side) after about 9 or 10 and we didn't want to take a cab all the time so we spent most evenings at Crazy Canuck's. Talk to the locals there for suggestions on restaurants. Blue Water Grill (north of the hotel by the airport) was our favorite but we had great food at all the places we tried. South of the hotel is Catamaran Beach Bar at another resort. It was small but fun with sand for the floor and amazing views. Not to mention Beliken on draft (the only place we found this and on the Friday we were there, 3 of them for $10 BZ)!
Walking along the beach from the hotel north to town is easy and surprisingly more direct than walking street side. A huge chunk of the distance has a sea wall or boardwalk making it easy to walk. Plus the view is better and you aren't breathing in the fumes of the golf carts.
If I ever get back to San Pedro it will be to do more diving and would love to stay at Exotic Caye again.

Room Tip: The building that housed 2B (and the ones on either side) face due east - so when the sun rises at 5...

We were not impressed with the accommodation, although the staff went out of their way to make everything better by moving us into another room, brought us a microwave. The rooms need some attention, the refrigerator was rusty on the inside, the comforter was lumpy, the head board and night stands were dusty, and the pillows smelled. Again, the staff was great, very helpful and friendly. We were disappointed with the beaches, because of the trash and seaweed. Overall the island trip was ok.
