We've just returned from a week at Xanadu Resort on Ambergris Caye in Belize and simply cannot say enough good things about the property and the folks that work there. My girlfriend, brother and I stayed in a 2 bedroom condo on the top floor (#9) and were completely knocked out by the size, cleanliness and overall comfortable atmosphere. Our deck, which ran the full length of one side of the building, was perfect for kicking back in the evening, reading a book and relaxing after a long, hard day of diving.
The people who worked in the office (Stacey, Susan and Martin), were extremely friendly, efficient, and could work the phones like magicians. They helped us book all our diving and inland excursions no matter what crazy things we wanted to do. When our plans changed, or we needed to switch to a different dive shop for off-shore dives, everything was taken care of. The resort is fairly small (12 rooms I think) and the grounds are meticulously maintained by a small team of friendly guys. One of the groundskeepers, Robert, would pull a couple of coconuts down for us when we'd be lying by the pool, pop those suckers open, and we'd be set up with fresh coconut milk. Now that's vacationing!
All in all, an extremely well run, friendly, clean resort. We'll definitely be back.

We spent a fantastic week at Xanadu. It is located just the right distance from all the excitement of San Pedro. We had a two bedroom suite directly on the beach with the pool right outside our door. After touring the island, we found Xanadu to be our favorite place because of the coconut trees and palms and secluded nature of the setting. The staff was friendly and helpful and very busy all day long keeping Xanadu perfectly clean and raked and safe. All of our needs were met as they made reservations for us for tours, dinner, snorkeling, golf cart, taxis, simply everything. We could not have asked for more. The thatched roof cabana was sound proof between rooms, roomy, very clean and kept that way daily by excellent maid service. Xanadu had just the right amount of privacy yet being on the beach we were able to stroll up and down visiting restaurants and watching others enjoying the same. A golf cart is a must and its a deal once you figure out the exchange, not hard since its 2 Belizean to 1 American. We just loved everything and when we go back we'll stay in the same place. We loved Belize and we loved Xanadu. Bonnie, David and Billy

We stayed at Xanadu from Jan 28 - Feb4. When we arrived in Belize City, our flight to A.C. was waiting for us, when we landed there, a cab was waiting for us, and then we were at paradise. Martin got us to our suite #3, I br with a loft. This was plenty big enough for 4 people, but we wanted a sea view. He answered all of our questions about our stay and made us feel like family right away. The pool area is awesome, but we did spend a lot of time at the end of the long pier. Stacey and Martin can arrange just about any tour you want leaving from their pier. This resort is quiet, beautiful, the staff is prompt and helpful. We ate breakfast and a few other meals in our fully equipped suite. Bikes were free for the asking. The middle of San Pedro is a 20 min. walk away. Marina grocery is at the entrance to the resort for basic needs. I found that the Green Grocer in town was the best to buy produce, Sausage Factory for meats, Caye coffee for coffee. We hooked up with a couple from the States who paid more for their room at Ramons, and they got a room, thats all. Seemed real pricey and busy there. I glanced at some other resorts and am glad we stayed where we did. Wicked awesome. Tried to book for the same time next year, but they are full with a wedding, by the way, we did see a wedding at Xanadu on the beach. It looked lovely. Could go on forever, cant wait to return. My husband and I stayed at Xanadu Resort at the end of the week-long trip to Belize. We arrived in San Pedro after visits to Placencia and San Ignacio. We took a very short taxi ride to the Resort, compliments of Xanadu, and were made to feel right at home immediately upon our arrival. The staff was extremely helpful: they gave us a quick run down of where to find anything we could possibly need -groceries, restaurants, etc. They also kept menus in the front office and would make calls to the restaurants for us with any questions or for reservations. The pool area was beautiful and well-kept, but even with the small number of rooms/visitors there, we found it a little bit difficult to get a chair. This was more of a problem on the beach, where they only had 2-3 sets of chairs, which were usually occupied. The pier & swimming area was nice, but as was the case everywhere in San Pedro, the beaches required a lot of maintenance (lots of debris washed up nightly.) The staff at Xanadu made sure that this was cleaned up, but if wading directly into the water from the beach is your thing, you're not going to find it here. That being said, the sand was a gorgeous white, and the water was beautiful. We really enjoyed being within walking (or golf-cart) distance to lots of restaurants and the grocery store, and probably would have taken advantage of the grocery/in-room kitchen situation a bit more had we stayed a week or so. For our short stay, I sort of wish we had stayed somewhere with an on-site restaurant and/or bar. The rooms suited us just fine - we didn't spend a lot of time in them so the large bedroom/living room/kitchen/dining room (all in one!) were fine with us. I cannot stress enough how pleasant our entire vacation was because of the Belizean people and the staff of the resorts we stayed in. This was the highlight of our trip! I would absolutely stay at the Xanadu Resort again, if our stay was more than 3 or so days. If we went back for a shorter time period, I'd probably go somewhere with an onsite dining/bar option.

Just wanted to share my experience at xanadu b/c I found other reports useful while researching my trip.
The Pros: all of the complimentary things people have posted here are generally true. The staff is exceptionally helpful and willing to please. The location for the family/couple not-necessarily-ready-to-party type is pretty perfect as down town san pedro is pretty bustling(for central american island standards) these days. Xanadu is a just enough far away from the dusty golfcart-ridden streets. If you like to go to beach bars and drink with the small party crowds it is still doable without losing your buzz on the way home.

The beach and pier are close to as good as it gets on AC. As far as accomodations, super luxurious, no- but I don't think there are many options on the island for that. But once your there, you do feel like your on the higher end of the scale This is not Grand Cayman.

So why go? 2 reasons for me: The feel and culture in San Pedro is great--not quite as authentic a mayan/mexican/creole scene as it used to be, but still interesting, friendly people with lots of local flavor who are pretty well educated enough for great conversation. Better soon b/c, unfortunately S.P. is cashing out and a sneeze away from a Home Depot.

The 2nd reason is the large selection of things to do.
If you are a watersports guy as I am, S.P. is great. Diving, fishing, windsurfing, sailing(not bareboat yachts), snorkling are all very good and more importantly, pretty cheap if you look around. I used a guy I met 15 yrs ago, Geraldo Badilla, and paid him rack rate of less than $200 a full day to take our group out on his Warrior 34 catamaran for as much sailing/snorkling/fishing as we could handle every day and he cooked meals (fish/lobster/conch we caught) that were better than ANYTHING you could get at a restaurant. (google El Gato Tours, san pedro). We did not have time, but there is a whole world of good Inland activities, eco-tours etc. Geraldo said not to miss the cave tubing-(we did.)

The only bad. San Pedro got expensive. Xandadu does not have more than one or two ocean front units- and the price is kind of steep for a garden view. Groceries are expensive and eating out is expensive unless you go to the local spots on middle and lagoon streets. You don't really save all that much cooking in the condo b/c you can't get good fresh meat and believe it or not fresh fish is hard to find unless you catch it yourself on a charter boat.

ok, enough of this reek already.....Have fun... p.s.: bottom line..if not on a tight budget go to xanadu won't regret it. If I had to do over, I'd leave the wives home to save on cost of pampering, stay in an AC b&b and blow it out on water activities, one barrel rum, cohibas de havana, a trip to glovers reef, 2 days at Caulker and a day inland.

My mom discovered kayaking in the last ten years. She has kayaked along the Chesapeake, the coast of England, 10,000 Lakes British Columbia, and the Florida Keys. Five years ago, a kayaking boyfriend brought her to Ambergris. The boyfriend didn't last, but the affection for San Pedro remains. His loss is my gain.

We have stayed in four different places in Ambergris. Xanadu was actually a fallback reservation, when our first choice was booked. It turns out, we like Xanadu the best! We are booking to return next year.

Having accomodations that include a kitchen facility is a nice freedom. When we woke up and wanted to stay in, we could cook our own breakfast and one night, after a fruitful day of reef fishing, we cooked our catch. It was great!

The fact that Xanadu does not have a bar or restaurant makes the resort a haven of peace and quiet, so you can actually hear the Carribean breeze.

In setting up the resort, the management has been very anticipatory of a guest's needs. If you want to cook, the kitchen is well eqipped with the basics, as well as the thoughtful provision of coffee, tea, sugar, bottled water, salt and pepper.

If you don't want to cook, the front desk has a book of menus from the various restauants, and if you like, personal recommendations based on staff experience.

The staff at the front desk is warm and welcoming. They can make arrangements to kayak, windsurf, fish, snorkel, tour ruins, sail, rent a cart, get a taxi, find a doctor, and more.

The Xanadu staff is not only highly competent, but very kind. The cleaning lady deferred sweeping the deck as someone was asleep in a hammock on the deck below. She even made sure a coin on the floor was returned.

My mom was under the weather and Susan helped us to find a doctor. Later in the day, Stacey came by to check on her, bringing a blanket warmed in the dryer. When it was time to check out, she had already confirmed our TropicAir flight reservations. Everyone who works there is great. Stacey, in particular, rocks!

Stacey arranged for us to snorkel along the reef, sail on a catamaran, stopping for a barbeque on the beach, and go reef fishing, The boats were new and well tended, the captains efficient and friendly. (On a previous trip at another establishment, the boat seemed to be patched together).

On our own, we zoomed all over the place in our spiffy golf cart, hit the shops, dined out, as well as in, basked in the sun on the beach, swam off the dock, and we made new friends. It was heaven.

We have no hesitations recommending Xanadu (unless it lessens our chances of making our reservations to come back).

We fell in love with Xanadu Island Resort the moment Stacy lead us to our room which was unit 2 and we saw the deck, the beach, the ocean, & the pier view, even though it was dark when we arrived. There were 4 of us and all were happy. It was everything their website indicated it would be.
The staff, from Susan who we made the reservations online with to Stacy who helped make all of our excursions including having a dozen red roses delivered from the mainland for an anniversary surprise, to Martin who helped us check out, to Dave the security guy, to Victor the landscaper..... All of them helped to make this a perfect vacation.
If you are looking for a small, private, friendly resort, Xanadu is the place for you.... It is well worth the money and the vacation time. My name is Sheila and if I loved it! I know you will too.
