“Staying in this hotel nearly ruined our entire trip”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 February 2011

With all the hotels to choose from on Ambergris Caye, do yourself a favor and avoid this hotel at all costs. My husband and I went there to celebrate our wedding anniversary, and on each and every day experienced enormous frustration at the Royal Caribbean. We thought that it looked like a cute little no-frills place to stay (my husband and I are both experienced world travelers and look for good value, low cost accommodation so we can spend our money on great food and adventures). Well, in my younger days, I've stayed in youth hostels that provide 10x the service as RCR. This was our first trip to Belize, and we felt like we were constantly being fleeced by the dishonesty and negligence of the staff (and owner) or this hotel -- whilst there, a tropical storm came through and while I could go into 1000 words of explicit detail, suffice it to say that the hotel left us on our own, with no direction. We finally found a concrete hotel (Coconut Beach) to move into for the night, and when we arrived, discovered after speaking with many other travelers who had come there for the evening from other (non-hurricane equipped hotels), that ALL of their hotels had found them the replacement hotel, had comped them on the alternative accommodations, and provided them free shuttle service to the new hotel. RCR on the other hand, waited so late to start making arrangements for us, that we barely got the last room at Coconut Beach, RCR had no intention of paying for our night there, AND to top it off, the front desk manager's boyfriend took us and another couple to CB, which was about 100 meters up the road, and promptly demanded $20 US DOLLARS for the ride, refusing to leave until we gave it to him. This is just an example of how poorly run this hotel is, and how little they value their customers. (I have so many more examples (eg broken bathroom doors, non-working electronics, spotty restaurant service, etc but am running out room... ) We weren't looking for concierge service, just a reliable resource and decent service. We received neither, and my frustration and anger with the hotel (on a daily basis, there was something that went wrong...) almost ruined our trip. We will go back to Belize, but next time will absolutely stay at Coconut Beach. The staff there were incredibly nice, honest and the accommodations were just as good if not better than RCR for the same price.

This resort was amasing! It cosists of individual houses called casitas. The casita we stayed in was 3 steps from the beach and a few steps from the pool. There was a working air conditioner, mini fridge, and a tv with cable channels in the casita. Even though the beach was not in the condions to swim in, it was so peacefull to just lounge on the chairs and watch the sea. The resort does not have a restaurant but there are a ton of places to eat and visit in town. The staff was amazing and super accomodating. Highly recommend this place.

Stay here in July and had a wonderful time.
The place was very clean and neat. Very comfortable and very quiet. You could walk out of your room and straight onto the beach.
The staff was very attentive and friendly.
They have wifi and internet access in the lobby for free.
Cable TV and a very nice a/c unit helps to pass the lazy evenings.
Can't say enough good things about the place.
You won't be disappointed.

What can I say, except that this resort is tops in what you get for the money. We stayed there five nights and had a blast!
Firstly, the service is impeccable; it seriously could not be any better. This resort will take care of anything you want to do in Belize. They booked our puddle jumper flight to and from Belize City, they ordered us pizza when we were too tired to go out to dinner, they called us cabs that showed up within 10 minutes, they got us a golf cart rental (which I also recommend), they arranged our snorkeling excursion, and they let us use their bikes for free to ride into town. They know Ambergris Caye extremely well and can give you invaluable tips and advice on what to do and what to avoid. They knew our names immediately and are so friendly. They greet you with a free rum punch, too!
The amenities are great here. This resort is not a luxury 5-star, but it's very comfortable and relaxing and a real bargain for what you pay. There used to be a restaurant on site, but it was torn down recently and they are building another one. The beach isn't the greatest for beachy activities, but that is true of most beaches around San Pedro. There's a lot of seaweed that washes up, but the resort does a great job containing it, so it really isn't too bothersome. There are chairs with umbrellas on the beach, which are quite fun. The pool is very clean and the bar and bartender are great. We just charged the drinks to our room and had no problem with checkout. The rooms are wonderful. Instead of typical hotel rooms, you get your own bungalow with a bedroom and little living room and kitchenette complete with microwave, small fridge, and sink; plus they supply some basic dishes and flatware. Cleaning service is daily and prompt; they even do the dishes for you.
I would highly recommend this resort, they made our first trip to Belize a real pleasure. One thing to add though: we had several geckos in our room. This didn't bother us, but if you are squeamish about bugs and small reptiles, then just skip Belize altogether. Because they're everywhere, including mosquitos, iguanas, geckos, little toads, etc.
The location of this resort is very good, too. It's located maybe a mile and a half south of the main part of town, San Pedro, but it is on the same little island as San Pedro (Ambergris Caye is really divided into two islands, and if you stay north of town, you have to pay bridge tolls to get into town. Staying at Royal Caribbean avoids that.) Some previous reviewers have said you can walk, but we never did. It would take a good 30 minutes to walk, and remember you're dealing with very hot sun. Cabs cost about 6 USD each way, and it's about a 7 minute ride. A golf cart rental is tons of fun and takes about 10 minutes. You can easily bike ride into town, it takes around 15 minutes. If you absolutely must be in the middle of the action, then this will be a bit distant for you. But we really didn't mind at all. And you should definitely make the trip into San Pedro, however you choose to get there. It's a fun little beach town with some great restaurants and good shopping.
All in all, we could not have been happier with our stay at Royal Caribbean Resort.

This resort is one of San Pedro's well-kept secrets. Located south of town in a quiet spot - where the pavement ends - the resort hides a pleasant beach, good-sized pool with sundeck, and an adjacent bar/restaurant. When we found ourselves one night short on lodging elsewhere, management was extremely accomodating, offering a fair rate for a spacious bungalow. While the furnishings were not lavish, they were more than sufficient for our needs. We don't go to Belize to sit inside, but if we had been caught in disappointing weather, we would have been comfortable enough. As it was, we enjoyed basking under an umbrella on the beach, without feeling other guests were on top of us. As the weather had been unusually cool, we did not venture into the pool, but can well-imagine it would be perfect for warmer days. It was apparent that management was upgrading units, improving landscaping, and generally working to please the guests. All in all, we liked the quiet, comfortable surroundings, with access to sun, food, and drink with no hassle.

We arrived on a Saturday after Thanksgiving. The resort had arranged for a cab to meet us at the airport and provided transportation. We were greeted by the staff Willa and Carlos and made to feel like "old" friends who had just stopped by for a visit.

The cabin was spotless and ready for us. After depositing our luggage and getting settled in, we kicked backed, relaxed a bit, and enjoyed the quaintess of the facility. You just need to remember that there is a difference between our time and "island time".

For dinner, we visited the Sand Bar, where both the food and service were excellant. We found the menu very much in tune with our wants and needs. During our visit, we became friends with Dave, and used him for possible suggestions of things to do. Dave also asked us for our feeling about the services we were using. His goal is to build a list of activities that he can refer future visitors, to insure they have a great visit.

Willa made our diving reservations with Amigos del Mar. The dive operators provided pick up and return service to the dock where you are staying. Additionally, they performed rinses and storage of dive gear for the entire week of diving. When we were finished diving, the Royal Caribbean staff made an area available to make the final rinse and drying of our gear.

We could really get use to living like this. We never felt any uneasiness either in town or along the way.

My fiance and I stayed at Royal Caribbean Resort in late January and are happy with the total experience. We were looking for a resort that was far enough away from the hustle and bustle of San Pedro, and this one fit the bill! Many of the reviews made outrageous claim about how far it is from town. It's only a 30 minute leisurely walk up the beach to town, and we did it quite often. If you do not wish to stretch your legs once in a while then, yeah . . . it's too far. You could not pay me to rent a golf cart, as there's way too much traffic on the island, and there looks to be a lot of development coming to the island. Too bad, as it will certainly lose some of its latin american charm. If you want to book tours, the front desk folks are more than happy to do so, and do a fine job. The staff was friendly, accommodating and our rooms were great! We liked that the place was a little off the beaten path, as we just wanted to kick-back,relax and enjoy the pool, which we did for hours and hours each day. The Sandbar Restaurant on the property was lousy!!! It's owned by two extremely lazy americans that just sit around on their butts all day and night and watch their hardworking staff do the work. Their food was okay, and overpriced, but the service was slow, slow, slow! We would stand at the bar with money in hand waiting to be served, and the owner would walk behind the bar, get himself a beer and go back to his stool without missing a beat! He would sometimes say that Marva (the one employee doing everything) "will be right with you". But that's it! I cannot say enough bad things about that bar!!! Ignore it, and maybe it will go away. Again, if you need to be constantly entertained, with lots of loud music, swim-up bars, fire breathing jugglers, etc . . . then this is not your place. Go to Cancun. However, if you need a nice, clean room with air conditioning, comfortable bed, Cable TV, microwave, refrigerator, and a terrific pool and beach, bring your book, grab a beer (out of your own frig) and enjoy the sun! Bring lots of sunscreen and bug spray though.
