We spent a week at X'tan Ha Resort - from Sept. 4-10th, 2013. Even though it is the rainy season, we had wonderful weather and it only rained as we were leaving on the 10th. The resort is literally Heaven on Earth! It is so beautiful and peaceful - perfect beach, nice people who work there and also who stay there as guests. We are so happy that we found this magical place on Tripadvisor!
I would like to address all of my concerns before arriving there - so if you are reading this - you know exactly what to expect - though words are really not adequate enough to describe the beauty and energetic peacefulness. Miriam, who makes the reservations, helped us so the trip to X'tan Ha was easy and seamless. She made reservations for us on Tropic Air out of Belize City to fly into San Pedro. This was a great idea - since it was only a 15 min. flight, and it was fun to see the water and islands from the heavens. Immediately after landing, Enner was there to meet us and transfer us to the dock to for the complimentary water taxi to X'tan Ha.
The boat ride is about 20 mins - and it oriented us to the island as we traveled northbound. There was no waiting around - all very fast and convenient including transfer of our luggage.
As we approached X'tan Ha - it looks like a perfect postcard - exactly as the website portrays.
We were met with a tropical rum drink and our luggage taken directly to our room. Right away you feel like you are with family. The resort is small and isolated and everyone is friendly. The guests that stay there are really nice, calm and quiet. Our upstairs room was facing the pool with a view of the ocean. The balcony is lovely. The living room/kitchen area is a good size for 2 people. The kitchen is stocked with tableware, dishes, pots and pans, toaster, coffee maker, full size refrigerator, small electric cooktop and a 5 gallon water jug of Crystal Water placed on a dispenser. You need not worry about safe drinking/cooking water. It is plentiful - and no extra cost. The bedroom is big with a super comfortable king size bed and a wardrobe. the bathroom is nicely appointed with room for all your cosmetics... The water pressure varies throughout the day. The resort uses well water and filtered (reverse osmosis) sea water to supply the sinks/showers, so depending on the well cycle, the water pressure may be less, then back to full force a few minutes later.
We had Mata Grande grocery deliver food to our room and it was put away for us. This was very convenient. We also brought 15 lbs. of our own food in our suitcase. We did not use the dining facilities at the resort since I cooked in our condo during the whole trip. I noticed that the produce in general, on Ambergris Caye is not so good, so if you get veggies that are wrinkled - from Mata Grande - they are the same in San Pedro's grocery stores. The best quality of vegies to buy are: potatoes, onions, zuchini and bok choy. We brought small packages of condiments that you can pick up at a fast food place - salt, pepper, ketchup, mustard, honey, mayonaise... The restaurant management at the resort has changed hands again and I heard that now there is an excellent chef and that the food is good. He is open to make what you would like if you do not see in on the menu - just ask ahead of time. Also there are specials that you are notified about in advance.
The guests that stay at this resort are wonderful. The first morning we went to the beach, and right away we met Rick who asked us if we wanted to go sailing - which we did. It was a lot of fun. The sailboat is an added bonus to all the other fun equipment: sea kayaks, paddleboards, paddle boat... All is free - as well as free life jackets if needed. All the guests share stories about what to do, where to go to eat etc. Thank you to Molly and Tom from Austin who recommended Waruguma, a small Belizean restaurant in San Pedro - no tourists - but great food!!! Thank you Sophie and Samuel from Montreal, Sura and Mike from Calgary for all the great info and sharing of conversations.
We tried all the fun equipment and learned to paddleboard and kayak, as well as jump on the water trampoline. The water is always smooth - no waves - so really easy to learn to do these activities.
The beach is exceptionally clean. The employees rake it twice daily and get rid of all the seaweed that floats in. It is by far, the nicest beach on the island. (We rode bicycles on the beach to Mata Grande which is a 3 mile bike trip each direction- and truly X'tan Ha's beach is the nicest and cleanest.) On the beach there are plenty of lounge chairs with comfortable pads and umbrellas if you just want to relax and read or drink. Since it was low season - many times I was the only one on the beach for hours each day. Really nice and tranquil! I could not believe my good luck!!!
There is a new dive shop, "No Worries" that opened at the resort 2 weeks ago - run by Hill - who is also the bartender. Hill, Mario and Kevin are all nice - you can rent snorkel equipment from them for $5 or plan trips to Mexico Rocks, Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley. It is so easy - just ask them and set a time, then go. Mario was our guide - he is knowledgeable and funny. Also they do fishing trips, then cook the catch on beach...
We did the Hol Chan/Shark Ray Alley trip which is fantastic and not to be missed.
The manager of the resort is a really nice man, Oliver and he will explain about the resort's history. This is also his home and he truly cares about the place, and about your experiences. The assistant manager. Ludrick is also lovely - as well as the rest of the staff - lots of good talks with Jose.
The swimming pool is clean and big enough to do some laps or lounge. That area is also aesthetically appealing.
Since it was the rainy season - there are more bugs than in the dry season. The resort sprays the grounds twice daily. The sand fleas come out when the wind dies down and they bite by the ankles. Also we got some bites by the "doctor fly" and mosquitoes even though we put on 3 different types of natural bug repellant. When we went off the property - we got bitten more...
We only went in to San Pedro once during our trip. There is a complimentary water taxi that leaves the resort on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:15 pm and returns at 8:30pm. If you want to go to town - there is a water taxi schedule - the price is $8 each direction if you buy your tickets at the resort in advance. Otherwise it is $10 each direction.
If you are a person that loves adventure, but quiet; beauty, nice energy and nice surroundings, you will find the X'tan Ha the perfect vacation resort! It is Heaven on Earth! I highly recommend it!
