Sea Dreams has a lot of pros: friendly service, private dock, use of bikes and canoes, stocked fridge with free water and cheap beer, use of beach towels, good location that is close to the Split but far enough away to be quiet, free wifi, included breakfast, and a rooftop lookout with hammocks. The unfortunate thing for us was that there was also a family reunion happening during our stay so many of the amenities were used up or felt off limits to us. We felt like we were in the way on the dock or breakfast area. I would recommend the hotel for its amenities--though it is a bit overpriced, but I would caution those who are not looking for a 100% family atmosphere. I am not sure that I would stay there again. Our friends stayed at another hotel on the island and had similar amenities without the crying children and overcrowded feeling. I think that it was an issue of unfortunate timing.

We had no complaints about our stay at Sea Dreams. The breakfasts were the highlight--delicious! Our courtyard room was small but certainly adequate. We loved hanging out upstairs on the hammocks after dinner each night. Staff was friendly and helpful. I recommend this hotel.

So the philosophy in Caye Caulker is "Go Slow" and they take is seriously. We were misdirected by two different shop owners when we got off the water taxi and walked to the complete opposite end of the Caye before we arrived at the hotel--only to find no one sitting at the check-in desk. Frustration. The cleaning staff graciously called the desk person, who returned with her lunch and checked us in. To be fair, I think we were rather early for check-in and our room wasn't ready so we went off to have our own lunch then went into our room.

We actually had a small apartment in Room 1--two bedrooms, sitting area, kitchen and bathroom. It was air conditioned and there were ceiling fans and standing fans in the bedrooms. The place was very nice. The area around the hotel was quiet and the floors in the room were tile so you could sweep out all the sand you drag in with you.

Breakfast was included in our room but when we went to get it we had a bizarre experience--there was another family at the table next to us. They appeared to also be on vacation. After serving ourselves orange juice (terrible and soapy tasting) and having 15 minutes with no acknowledgement that we were even there let alone that food was going to be served, the woman from the other family's table brought out plates from the kitchen of eggs with ham and cheese, fry jacks and beans. As a vegetarian this was basically an inedible breakfast for me. There were apparently no other choices because no one asked us about anything. I have no idea if the person who brought our plates was staff, owner, or just another tourist who had been there a while and gotten comfortable with the kitchen. We bailed and ate at Paradise Cafe down the road.

The other problem with the limited front-desk hours is check-out. We left Caye Caulker on a 7:30 a.m. water taxi and thought we'd check out the night before in case no one was there in the morning--well, no one was there at 8:00 p.m. at night NOR at 7:00 the next morning--we left our keys with the cook in the breakfast area. I assume this was fine but it would have been nice to have been given this instruction at check-in.

Those negatives didn't really detract from our stay there--it is a small hotel and I didn't really expect 24-hour desk service but overall it was a little odd.

Some big pluses, though:
They were terrific and friendly with email correspondence when I booked.
The front desk was very helpful when we needed to print one thing on their computer.
The room was large and sparkling clean and all the staff that we actually saw were friendly.
The fridge is stocked with beer and softdrinks that are reasonably priced and you can order snack to be delivered there, too. Your room comes with a large cooler of fresh drinking water
They have their own private dock where you can swim and they offer beach towel to borrow, bikes to borrow, and snorkeling gear to borrow.
They have wifi included in the room.

The pros far, far outweigh the minor "cons" we encountered and we would stay here again if we ever returned to Caye Caulker.

Dear Rural Virginian,

We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your room, front-desk service, housekeeping, swimming dock and amenities. I am sorry to hear that you were not satisfied with your breakfast. I am also a vegetarian and understand your reaction to your plate. The woman who served you was an enthusiastic guest who felt part of the Sea Dreams family. Aida is sensitive to serving meat (her son is a vegetarian) and as a matter of practice, she asks guests for their preference before preparing each breakfast. We are deeply apologetic that your experience was outside of our norm. I drank the same orange juice that morning and we noticed the unusual "soapy" taste of one particular bottle. We then threw it out.

Our front-desk is open every day from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, closed for lunch from 1:00 - 2:30 PM (though we often stay open during lunch). Our housekeeping staff and our cook Aida are able to provide service during the early hours and lunch hours, and I live beside the hotel and am available for emergencies.

We would love to host you again on a return visit. We hope that you will be able to stay for an extended period of time. The go-slow vibe of Caye Caulker and family atmosphere of Sea Dreams is most appreciated with more time to unwind. And, I'm certain you'll love the freshly-squeezed orange juice and homemade banana pancakes!

Thank you for taking the time to list out your pros and cons. We value customer feedback and will review it with our staff.

Sincerely,

Heidi Curry

We had a wonderful time staying a Sea Dreams. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The beds were incredibly comfortable, and the breakfasts were great. Our boys enjoyed diving off the dock and using the canoes. We would highly recommend this hotel to families.

Sea Dreams Hotel is a beautiful hotel with all the conveniences of B&B at a much more affordable price. The rooms are well decorated and super clean, fitted with a mini fridge (stocked with a few welcome beers/colas!), AC, TV, and the softest sheets that are changed on request. The hotel offers their guest's free access to bikes, canoes, their private peer, and their ever smiling staff is happy to answer any questions regarding your trip. There is also a beautiful rooftop bar that serves a free breakfast everyday (cooked by Aida, one of the most famous cooks on the island!) and is open for happy hour unless stated other wise. The rooftop is made like a treehouse and the hammocks are perfect for falling asleep in after 1 or 4 "panty-rippers," a belizean rum drink!

I would reccomend this hotel to couples as a perfect romantic hideaway! Also perfect for people who are willing to pay a little more for comfort and beauty. It's a complete bargain for everything you get, and priceless for the wonderful experiences you are sure to have here!! Thank you so much Sea Dreams staff.!!
