“Best Spot on the Island”
Reviewed 16 October 2013

We went to Caye Caulker as part of a two week backpacking trip through Guatemala and Belize, without much of a plan as to accomodations as we went. Caye Caulker was our final stop on our trip, and after a bit of walking, we found this place along the beach, almost to the end. We talked to Colin and got a rate quote, which wasn't bad at all. Being the pervasive bargain shoppers we are, we told him we were going to go take a look at the next set of cabanas down the beach. He chuckled, and told us "go check them out, and I'll see you guys back here in a few minutes." Not in a condescending way, just a fun way.
Sure enough, we were back in 4 minutes.
We ended up with a condo on the floor above his office, which looked out onto the ocean, and had a nice breeze blowing in off the water. The A/C unit was awesome, and our every need was met. He let us borrow his snorkel equipment for free, and we spent a large amount of time in the two large, comfortable hammocks at the end of the pier on the beachfront.
Outstanding.

Room Tip: Get one of the second floor condos overlooking the water, it's worth the money.

We were lucky enough to get a beachfront room so we had a killer view and AC in the bedroom. Linda greeted us when we arrived and was really helpful with great recommendations around the island. She also provides free bikes to cruise around town so you don't have to waste your money on a taxi. Cruising on a bike really is the best mode of transportation on the island. Our bike chain did come off but she had other spare bikes readily available so we were good to go. We originally intended to stay for a few nights but the place is so relaxing and the amenities were so amazing that we stayed for an extra 3 nights. Amenities like drinkable water, AC in the bedroom, bike cruisers, kayaks, wifi (which was strong since we stayed on the 2nd floor above the office), full kitchen, great housekeeping, and balcony with a hammock just made the experience so relaxing. Linda had such a great vibe too - she was super easy to talk to and hospitable. She made it so easy for us to enjoy our vacation.

We stayed with Colin and Linda (hence the name :)) for 3 nights. First of all, these are the best people. Always around, very helpful, but most important just genuine nice people. They helped us finding the cheapest supermarkets (there are a lot of them, with big prize differences,) if there was anything with your room they instantly tried to solve it. Their staff was also amazingly friendly.

The location is south of town, on the east (reef facing) beach. You can reach it either by dirt road (they're at the end) or via the beach. Its a few hundred meters south of the last shops and hotels so it really feels secluded. It's right at the beach so you kinda have a small 'private' beach (although officially the 'beach path' runs through it, but it is hardly used)

Don't expect to use the beach as a beach though (lying on the sand on a towel) because the sand area is too small. But no where on the island there is really any usable beach. They solved this by building a pier into the water with several platforms with sunbathing chairs, and right at the end there's a small roof for much needed shade with two hammocks. We spent most of our time here :)

We booked the smallest (and cheapest) cabin right at the end. It was very beautifully constructed and painted. Inside you had a nice bathroom, quite a complete kitchen (perfectly adequate for cooking your own meals), A/C and everything needed to make your own coffee. The provided (practically) unlimited filtered drinking water. In front of this cabin (and all other cabins) was a nice patio with two chairs and a table, and a comfy hammock.

Lesser points: although we loved it there it is only fair to mention the lesser points. I mentioned these to Colin and he would work on those that he could fix. The A/C unit was right above the bed which produced a lot of noise during the night, but to be fair, it was a small cabin so you never get it really far from the bed. They flushed the toilet with water from a well instead of fresh water. I think that this is great but unfortunately the water from the well did contain sulfur (Colin told me) so this gave a bit of a smell when you flushed. Finally: the internet did not work in our room. There were two modems on the property and the front one worked perfectly, only the back one (for all the cabins in the back) didn't. They are aware of this and I'm sure they will fix it soon!

These are the only (small) negatives. An other thing is security. Please be aware that getting back to the cabanas during the night can be tricky because of its remote location. Unfortunately there have been incidents with muggings. Naturally Colin and Linda have nothing to do with these nasty aspects of the island and there's nothing they can do about it, but I do feel it needs mentioning here.

We had a fanatic stay, and I believe it's one of the best places to stay if your looking for a relaxed, secluded and very friendly atmosphere.

We just got back from a three night stay at Colinda Cabanas in Caye Caulker. This is a great place to stay. Quiet. Clean. Comfortable. Accommodating. Free bikes with your unit get you all over the island, so no need to rent a cart. Beach front walk paths give you a scenic stroll to anything on the island you wish to enjoy or visit. Free snorkel gear. Free use of SOT kayaks, and of course the beautiful view. Hosts Linda and Colin have created the best getaway spot on the island. We chose Colinda Cabanas based on the online reviews, and they were spot on.

Room Tip: We enjoyed unit #9 with the full kitchen. It's tucked right behind the beachfront unit, which bl...

In my view, the key to a successful vacation is getting an experience that matches your expectations, and with Colinda Cabanas we got exactly what we were hoping for.

We reserved an upper front suite with a gorgeous view of the ocean. Linda met us when we arrived and took the time to point out all the locales on a map of the island, which we frequently referred back to. Then she ushered us up to our room, which was even better than we hoped.

We read the reviews and wanted to stay on a quiet, remote place on the ocean that had air conditioning in case it got too hot. It was this, but it really was completely stocked with everything you could possibly want--a hammock, clotheslines, an oven, a huge water cooler, a refrigerator-freezer with ice trays, and every form of dishware, cookware, and cutlery you could possibly want, including a pitcher, whiskey glasses, cutting board, and coffee grinder. The AC only cooled down one room, the bedroom, but that's all we wanted, a place where we could go if it got too hot, and on two nights it definitely got hot. But Colinda offered much more than: free snorkel gear (which we used), free bicycles, free kayaks. The dock supplied a terrific view of the ocean during the day and a beautiful view of the stars at night. There's a night watchman and a housekeeper who did a great job every day.

We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. If you're looking for all the conveniences and services of a Hyatt or Marriott, well you shouldn't even be visiting Caye Caulker. If you're looking for a quiet, non-commercial place where you can feel comfortable and relaxed, this might be the place for you.

Room Tip: The two Upper Suites seem to have the great ocean views. The other units may not have views.

My husband and I enjoyed two wonderful nights here at Colinda's Cabanas, after we decided to extend our stay in the charming Caye Caulker by a few days. What a fantastic place to stay. It is very clear that Colin and Linda have put a lot of time and effort into catering for their travelling guests. Obviously, the location and amenities are fabulous - its coastal position on the southern side of town, means that it is even MORE peaceful and chilled out than most other places on the island (as impossible as it might seem). Everything on the island is still within a 5-10min stroll along the beach away, or a 1 minute bike ride (and bikes are provided for free!).

The main reason that we chose Colinda's Cabanas was because of their lovely 'chill out' facilities. The hammocks and chairs on the private dock, and the personal hammock on the verandah of each unit, meant that we always had a nice place to relax outdoors. After staying 3 nights at a hammock-less hotel, this was a real highlight. Given the lack of public beach areas on the island, I would recommend making such facilities a priority in your search for accommodation here, if you''re looking to spend time just relaxing or reading. Another major attraction for us was the fact that each unit has a fridge and basic kitchen facilities - so we were able to buy and prepare food for some meals at home (after eating out CONSTANTLY for the past few weeks, we loved being able to prepare our own breakfasts and lunches again!)

But for us, it was all the little that made the real difference; the coffee beans, grinder and machine so we could make delicious fresh coffee each morning; the provision in each cabana of umbrellas, mosquito coils, books, boardgames, drinking water, and.. wait for it...towels bigger than washcloths!! (a first for us on our Central-America-on-a-budget trip).

I could go on and on, but I'll stop here, I think. Time to go spray the ants in the corner of my 'not-Colinda's-Cabanas' hotel further on down the line (*sigh).

This trip was a blast. I visited the island with one other female friend, on our first trip alone. We were a little concerned for our safety as first time travelers but the island was completely safe and Colindas Cabanas was a great choice. Their prices are reasonable and the rooms are great! They provide you with bikes which comes in handy and they owners (Colin and Linda) are super sweet and welcoming.

Room Tip: Rooms closer to the office have better Wi-Fi.
