“Vega Inn”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 June 2008

Vega Inn has a guest house near the water taxi doc, and a couple of other places around the island. We rented a house that was up toward the Split from the doc. The house was great, but we didn't get much rest. There are some rental properties behind the house that had 4-5 dogs living off the trash that the tenants would dump out their kitchen window. Beside the disgusting scene, it was just dogs barking all night. It was super annoying. I complained to the Vega owner, she talked to the neighbors and nothing changed. So if you're staying with Vega, the house up the street is great, but the dogs and the noise up there is intolerable. I found the condition of the island terribly disappointing. There is trash everywhere, and no one appears interested in cleaning it up. Foam food containers everywhere you look. It's a shame really. A gorgeous caribbean island covered in trash, with ferrel dogs running all over the place. Would be good for a couple, not so hot for kids as there really isn't much of a beach. The split would be OK for swimming if the fisherman up there wouldn't clean their catch and leave the guts. We won't be going back to this part of Belize. Oddly enough I found Mexico to be a great deal more enjoyable, although a bit more crowded. I would try Ambergris Caye next time.

We stayed at the Vega Inn from May 4th-May13th, 2007. Our apartment was actually across from the MAIN Vega Inn. It is set on its own little piece of property, with an upstairs and downstairs. There is a little sitting area and one hammock right outside your door. Then, the MAIN Vega Inn has so much land on the actual water/beach side and you can use their chairs and other hammocks set up in the shade. It was perfect- most places don't have this much area for their guests to use.. it is beachside and HUGE! Very cool..

As the other review said, the actual apartment was nothing fancy with no A/C. But there are ceiling fans in every room, hot water, a double and single bed, and a refridge. The owner and manager, Maria, is very helpful and sweet. She arranged for our pick-up and arrival back to their small airport and allowed us to buy a BIG 5-gallon water tub for $2.50 to refill our nalgene bottles. That saved us ton of $$!

We only paid $35 US a night for this place. In our opinion, worth it for the money. $260 US for the week is cheap. Our diving lessons costs more than that. We dove at Frenchie's Diving. Best in town.. we had a blast at Turneffe Islands "Elbow" during our first dive. WE WILL BE BACK!

While lodging was not extravagant, it was very clean and comfortable. Electric fans kept the room at a comfortable temperature. We stayed on the top floor of the guest house and the view of the beach and water was terrific. The room contained a double and twin bed. A refrigerator was provided. The bathroom had lots of hot water. The location was great and we would certainly book a return trip.
