We've stayed in Caye Caulker at a few other hotels in the past. The Barefoot Beach Belize is in a great location... north of town and on the beach. There's a nice palapa with hammocks and chairs right on the water (though several of the lounge chairs are broken). The room is generally clean... clean sheets and towels. The room definitely could have used a fresh coat of paint, but for the price it was a good deal. Our stay was great until our last day.... We had 3 cockroaches in our room on our last day/night. Very gross. We killled one in the shower in the middle of the night only to find that it was gone in the morning... apparently dragged off by another cockroach or a lizard. Very disconcerting.

Sorry guys...it IS the Tropics. We have lizards, ants, and roaches. We do spray our rooms monthly, but with the rain we have had, we will occasionally still get critters. A fair trade for the beauty and warmth we enjoy here.

Our suite was right on the seafront and offered stunning views. The bed was comfortable, clean and large. A fridge, air conditioning and plenty of fresh water all added to the comfort of this rustic but well appointed accommodation. Susan was extremely friendly and even brought us a beer on arrival to quench our thirst in the heat after the five minute walk from the quay. Caye Caulker is a wonderful place to visit and Barefoot Beach is a great place to stay.

My wife and I had a wonderfully relaxing four night stay at the the Barefoot Beach Hotel on Caye Caulker. The hotel owner, Susan, is a genuinely caring, interesting, informative, and helpful host. She lives on site, which I imagine can be very demanding, dealing with a wide variety of guests and their assorted issues. We felt appreciated throughout our stay and saw only kindness from Susan and her entire staff.

We stayed in the Oceana cottage set back a bit from the beach under shaded palms with a beautiful 90 plus degree ocean view. There are rooms closer to the beach with 180 degree views. Our cottage was very clean, charming, and efficient, with a fully equipped kitchen. The A/C was super quiet. There is a ceiling fan in the living area and the bedroom along with a stand alone fan. The Caribbean breeze kept the living/kitchen area comfortable all day in near 90 degree temps without the A/C! We only ran the A/C at night to cool the back bedroom . The bathroom has a well crafted tile shower and a beautiful carved wood sink pedestal. These small details make the little cottage so charming. There is a small deck with two comfortable chairs across the front which is perfect for ocean/people/bird watching. WiFi was best on the deck. There are also picinic tables set around the grounds. The grounds are well kept with plenty of shade trees, especially around the cottage. I loved the sound of the wind rushing through the palms.

We found the Barefoot Beach Hotel to be in an ideal location. An easy 10 minute stroll to the water taxi docks, yet away from the bustle of the village center. Our stay was very quiet and relaxing. The other hotel guests were respectful of the peace and quiet. We enjoyed swimming and chillin' on the pier, cruising the island by bike, and kayaking (available to rent next door). Susan helped us arrange a long day trip to the Lamanai Mayan ruins. She knows who to call to arrange island tours. There are less expensive places to stay on Caye Caulker, but we did not see anything as nice as the cottage at Barefoot Beach.

We recently stayed at Barefoot Beach on Caye Caulker and had a wonderful stay. Having read some very negative reviews, I was nervous upon arrival but it ended up being the perfect place for us. True, the owner was not the most welcoming of people (when we arrived she was standing right outside and did not say a single word like "welcome" or "hi there" and just stared at us as we walked in). But for us, this really was not an important thing, especially since our interaction was minimal (our room was a standalone cabana). The room was clean and very spacious with a separate living area and kitchen. The air conditioning worked perfectly and we were very grateful for it! We did not use the kitchen extensively, but it was nice to have it there and the large jug of drinking water was much appreciated.

The room itself was great, but the decor/bedding could definitely use some updating. The sheets looked pretty old (and me being picky I'd much prefer white sheets to bright pink and purple), but were clean nonetheless. The shower water had a bit of a sulfur-y smell, but from what I read, that is not completely uncommon on Caye Caulker, and we weren't expecting major luxury on such a small island.

As for the location, we thought it was perfect. Yes, it is a bit of a walk (about 5 minutes?) to the main street, but we loved how quiet and peaceful the area was (we would've hated being in one of the hotels right on front street).

The private pier is AMAZING. There are hammocks and plenty of beach chairs to lie out on, and was such a relaxing spot.

All in all, we had a good stay at Barefoot Beach. It's a solid, no fuss hotel that gets the job done with clean rooms and a great location.

Room Tip: Would recommend the Cabana - it's standalone and in the back. No "beach view" but we liked having our own little building.

Great place, clean, knowledgable and friendly staff. Far enough away from the main village to be quiet, but close enough to be able to walk to resturants and bars easily. Bikes were useful for getting round the island. a/c was useful for sleeping. Own private beach palapa was great.
