“Good hotel”
Reviewed 11 January 2012

My boyfriend and I stayed here (room #12) for 5 nights in January 2012. The prices were really quite high, but we had just backpacked through Guatemala and stayed at cheap hostels so wanted something a little nicer. This did the trick. It wasn't amazing ,but was good. The room was spacious, had everything we needed. The restaurant was good and we got a 10% discount there and we stayed in the hotel. The best part is the location- right on the water with a private dock. It is on the side of the island opposite the Split which worked out nicely because the "beach" and the dock were always very quite, but it was a short (15 minute) walk to the Split which was more busy. We had a great time!

When we go to Caye Caulker, and want an inexpensive place, we choose Tropical Paradise. It suits its purpose, and it is on the beach. Be sure and get a beach front room if they have it. They are well located. They do have a restaurant that has good food.

I wouldn't recommend for people wanting anything fancy, but then again, Caulker isn't known for being fancy.

I got a single room (#4) and stayed here in July 2011 for 2 weeks. I paid $22.50USD/night which was a good deal for the room. For the most part you get what you pay for on Caye Caulker, and this is exactly what I wanted. Cheap, no frills, but clean (enough), and free wi-fi. The beds weren't very comfortable, but I never saw one bed bug which was my main concern. The location is pretty good if you want somewhere quieter off the main strip. The main strip itself is only about a 15 minute walk from end to end so it's not like you're ever very far from anything. Tropical Paradise has their own private "beach" with chairs, umbrellas and perfect ocean breeze. The fact that I stayed here for 2 weeks when I could have easily moved hotels, means I pretty much thought it was the best hotel for the rate and what I was looking for.

Room Tip: Ask to see the rooms first and various prices, then negotiate a nicer room at a lower rate.

My husband and I stayed here in January 2010. The best thing about this hotel is that it is right on the beach with its own pier. I woke up every morning and walked 15 steps to the water...can't beat that. I was always able to find a chair for lounging and loved that it was so convenient.

The room itself was very basic, with A/C and a private bathroom. We were on the ground floor, facing the courtyard to one side and the cemetery to the other. The cemetery was a little creepy, but whatever, just go with it. I have to say that the A/C was pretty weak and our room usually felt a little humid. However, A/C, even weak A/C, was necessary, as the small windows leading to the courtyard did not ventilate well, so it would have been super stuffy without A/C.

The room and grounds were kept really clean, and we did not have any of the problems other people mentioned here about bugs. We kept food in our room and still never ran into ants, bedbugs, or other critters. They cleaned the room every day, which was great, but also a little annoying because they always seemed to be cleaning it mid-afternoon when my husband and I were returning from our activities. We usually had to wait at the bar or restaurant for a good half hour until they were done. Can't complain too much about the wait with a drink in hand.

The hotel is pretty quiet, given that it is a little set back from the town. But the whole island is so small that "set back" just means a 5-minute walk to everything, which is fantastic.

Overall, great location, average rooms, and prices were pretty comparable to other places on the island (we paid $60 per night). It wasn't my favorite place, but I might return someday. We're trying somewhere else for our next trip to Caye Caulker in a few weeks.

Room Tip: Try to get an ocean facing room, as the breezes are much nicer

Not a bad hotel, good price for Caye Caulker. Quiet place with its own dock and sea views. Room cleaned and towels changed everyday. Free internet (wifi) included in the price. All in all, recommendable.

They have apartments for rent and we agreed to rent for a month. The money we were told to pay was paid in cash and we moved in. That afternoon they presented us with a written contract for this time period and it had many extra charges that we were told were included with the original price. They now wanted $10 a day for use of the internet and to use the TV they also wanted more money. All of a sudden they also wanted another $300 for a deposit too. We are honorable people who when we agree to a price will pay it. This paperwork stated they wanted hundreds more dollars for the month. We disagreed with this contract and moved out immediately. We were in the unit for a couple of hours. We were told that they dont refund so that they wouldn't give us our money back. After a visit to the police station and a verbal argument we were refunded some of our money. They ended up keeping $125 for absolutely nothing. Easy money for them to keep. We will NEVER stay there again and will tell our friends the same.

Room Tip: Dont pay for anything without the paperwork up front.

Recently we overnighted at the Tropical Paradise in caye Caulker. We were met at the water taxi terminal by a friendly gentleman trying to hussle rooms for the resort. He presented us a price list showing that private cabanas with A/C on the beach were $80-$90 BZ per night. Based on this info, we paid a taxi to take us down to the resort. Upon arrival, we were informed that their A/C rooms were $110 per night. After much confusion (we were ready to leave), we were given a room for $90. While the room was average in cleanliness, the A/C was very bad - plus when the security light came on around 8pm, we discovered it was right outside our window. It was a long, hot night sleeping in a well-lit room. However in all fairness, we had a great dinner at their restaurant!!! Would I go back and stay again? Doubtful...

Room Tip: Check A/C first and for security light placement
