“Not as promised.”
Reviewed 6 April 2009

After lots of research, I booked a private snorkel tour with Star Tours to avoid a large group and have a quiet experience. Just as we were walking on to the boat we were told that we were going with a group and that the boat for the private was "broken". We ended up in a group with two toddlers, one of which was extremely enoying.

It was actually quite a bit more difficult to try to get to Cay Caulker by water taxi and if we hadn't caught the first one (made it by about one minute by getting the first tender from our ship and rushing) we would have missed the tour! The walk through town to the water taxi is not recomended.
Also, we ended up not going to Shark and Ray alley but a similar place so never actually saw that. I guess the "private boat " might have been actually broken but I would not recomend this tour at all.

We apologize, but the boat did experience mechanical problems. It was totally out of our control. The Tour did go to the Shark Ray Alley. Am sorry but we could not have known the toddler would annoy you. Again, apologies for the inconvenience but we ended up not charging you for the Private Charter and just the regular Tour.

“Great Personalized Snorkeling Worth the Transport Hassle”
Reviewed 10 December 2008

We booked a Star Tour while in port in early December, 2008. We did so despite the concerns about transportation to Caye Caulker. and my general nervousnes about booking off cruise line and not getting back in time. Ramon, at Star Tours, was very responsive to my many emails. He assured me that someone would be at the Marine Terminal (a 4 minute walk from the pier) to greet us and get us to Caye Caulker. The problem arose when NCL only allowed us to tender after all NCL excursion passengers had tendered. We arrived in port at 8:55. While still in the secure pier area, we asked for directions. We were sent in the opposite direction. The second person we asked claimed that there wasn't any place called the Marine Terminal. He directed us to the water taxi terminal. When we arrived there, we found at that we were at the wrong water taxi terminal. Apparenlty, we were supposed to be at the Caye Caulker water taxi terminal. By the time we got there, the 9 Am boat had left. Needless, to say, I was very unhappy, worrying we would not have enough time to snorkel if we took the 10:30 boat. I called Stat Tours and was assured we would have enough time. Since we prepaid, we decided to forge ahead. We had to be a bit insistent with the terminal staff that we had prepaid tickets, but they called Star Tours and it was settled. The good news is that once we got to Caye Caulker, all of this hassle was forgotten. We were greeted at the pier and guided to the office along the beach. The office staff was very careful about coordinating our return time to be sure I was not anxious about missing the cruise. Within minutes, we had met our very personable guide, Glen, and we were in the boat. (We did bring our own snorkel gear which speeded things up). My family of 4 shared the boat with only one other snorkeler. Glen asked us where we wanted to go (shallow v. deeper) and took us to 3 different locations (StingRay Alley and 2 locations in Coral Gardens) He offered to take us to a 4th location but after about 2 1/2 hours of fairly non stop snorkeling, the majority was tired and opted to go to shore. The snorkeling was fantastic. None of that trying to avoid the fins of fellow snorkelers when you go on a crowded cruise excursion. I can't recall how many species of fish we saw but they were in abundance. And the coral reef was gorgeous. Glen was as helpful as you wanted which meant for the talkative like me, he gave me all the info I wanted and left others to themselves. I don't judge a snorkel trip by the food but I have seen some posts to that effect. Bottom line, he had water on board and fresh fruit. Frankly, we were having such fun that we didn't want to waste time so we just ate bananna's between stops. This was truly the best snorkeling experience we have had. Someday, we'll get to the Great Barrier Reef, but for now we plan on returning to Caye Caulker and using Star Tours for our snorkeling adventures. Oh yeah. the trip back went smoothly .

“In the end, a good snorkel experience”
Reviewed 18 August 2008

Ok so we signed up for this trip as a cruise ship passenger. We did so last minute because we really wanted to snorkel with the stingrays and the previous two tours we were booked with 1) changed th eitinerary due to high gas prices and 2) cancelled because of a ship itinerary change. So we arrive in Belize 7:30 ship time (5:30 Belize time). We wait a while and make our way off the ship. Our info. says to go to the marine terminal (warning you have to walk through some of the city- it is a very short 5 minute walk and we felt safe but it was sketchy looking). Got to the terminal to find it is the water taxi. After talking to the lady working the desk we convince her our trip is free because we are on the tour. The first taxi does not leave to 8 am Belize time so we had about an hour wait. As we are sitting there we look at the schedule and see that we have to make the 12 pm water taxi (2 pm ship time) to be on the tender by 3:45 ship time, as the next taxi is at 2pm which would get us back to late. So we get on the water taxi and it is a 1 hour ride to Caye Caulker. We get there, find the tour company and the guy seems kind of clueless as the snorkel is from 10:30-1:30 but we have to make the 12pm water taxi. Finally he says we will do part of the tour. So we have breakfast, come back at 10:30 and head out with 4 others. Luckily, we don't go far and the first spot is a 45 minute through the coral reef- very cool but tiring with waves crashing around you. Then we go a few minutes away and we do get to snorkel with the stingrays. This was amazing! They come up to you and go in and out of your legs- awesome. But of course we have to head back for the water taxi (so we only get about 1 hour 15 mins snorkel time) But we get back on time and onto the ship. It cost us $80 for 2 which did include water taxi ($30) so basically $25 which is not too bad considering I did want to see sting rays. Just a lot of waiting time.

“A fabulous trip to a fabuous reef with friendly people”
Reviewed 8 September 2007

Star Tours took good care of us and we enjoyed a beautiful day snorkeling. I am a scuba diver and not usually excited about snorkeling but this trip was different. We stopped to snorkel with the turtles then went on to shark/ray alley where we were able to swim with the sharks and pet both them and the rays. AWESOME! We stopped several more times to see beautiful staghorn & other chorals and had lunch in San Pedro. The dive masters were very attentive and made sure that everyone was comfortable with their gear and around the sharks & rays. They paid particular attention to snorkelers that were new or had some physical problem. Thanks for a great tour, we'll be back this year.
