We stayed here for two nights with a tour group but seriously considered stumping up for somewhere else.

We were downstairs in the main building which has seen better days. Our bathroom was a mess with something gross smeared around the toilet seat and thick mould around the shower nozzle. Everyone from out tour commented on how the shower water stunk of chemicals or an almost organic smell. The linen in the rooms were also in disrepair with dirty marks and cigarette holes.

While nothing is really that far away at Caye Caulker this hotel isn't positioned at the happening end of the island.

First of all, Tom's Hotel is located quite a walk from the hotspots of activity on Caye Caulker - if you are thinking of going to Caye Caulker, pick something closer to the northern end of the island. Whilst Tom's Hotel covered all the basics of a short stay on a budget hotel, it was reasonable for the price.

We stayed in the main building; the rooms were very basic, and the bathrooms were something else to be desired, but had running water and flushing toilets nonetheless. If you get a chance, ask for an extra sheet as the beds can become irritable after a nights sleep (no doubt due to bedbugs).

Great for a cheap one nighter, but if you're thinking of spending longer on Caye Caulker, it's worth looking elsewhere.

Room Tip: Get a room on the upper floor of the main building as they are a lot cooler, with generally cleaner...

Basic accommodation here. Our room had a street light outside and there was no way of blocking the light out. Also very noisy from the hallway. All the doors are self closing and they slam shut so you are kept awake all night with slamming doors. You had to be lucky to get hot water, but at least with the hot weather and high humidity you don't really need it. The room was very hot with no flow of air. There was no air conditioner and the fan didn't make much difference. Wi fi is available but only outside. Can't really recommend this place.

We had different rooms. The one staying in the main building (concrete) all said the rooms are too hot. They have 3 cabanas outside, and that's what you want if you stay there. Most of the rooms in the building are on shared bathroom basis.
Other than that the hotel is on the other end to the split, which means a bit far from everything.
But it's good to walk!

Room Tip: Grab a cabana

Let me start by saying both Tom and his family are lovely and the location of the hotel is only a short walk up the beach to the main area (although a 20 minute walk from the split). We stayed here with our tour group and everyone had the same complaints. Rooms are ridiculously hot and beds / pillows are all stained and very uncomfortable so you can not sleep. The bathroom was disgusting and the water is the shower is brown and STINKS so we could not use it. The security isn't crash hot either. If you're just there for a night I'm sure it wouldn't be too bad but if you're there any longer stay somewhere else!!

I stayed in this accommodation with a tour group and found it to be adequate for the short time we were there. I shared an upstairs room with a friend and the majority of the other rooms were occupied by our tour.

The room is quite large, however sparsely furnished. There is a ceiling fan and numerous louvers which assist with keeping the place cool, however at times the room can be very hot. We were fortunate to have cool breezes from the beach at night, which is located a short stroll from the hotel.

There are communal showers and toilets, two per floor, however I understand the downstair ones may be better then upstairs. Be prepared to utilise your own toiletries which can include your own toilet paper. The shower rarely had hot water but the weather didn't make this an issue. The shower head was covered in green algae and the sink and toilet were somewhat scary at times, however this was due to sharing it with many people.

The owners live in a house on the property, Tom makes his own lobster pots which can be seen on the grounds. We didn't have much to do with them.

The property has a balcony on the second floor which looks to the ocean, there is also a rooftop area. The hotel is located at the far end of the island, but is only a short distance from the main part of the island which has restaurants etc. The island is easy to explore by foot and has numerous water activities available.

The only note of concern was the lack of security at this hotel. The floors can be entered by anyone walking in off the beach. If you are security conscious then no cause for alarm but certainly something to point out. Our group did not have any issues however in terms of security.

Definitely a budget place to stay.

We stayed here as part of a tour and I assume that the only advantage of this place is that it is cheap. Basic doesn't even really begin to describe it. Soap is not provided - make sure to bring your own - and whether you'll have hot water is a bit of a lottery. The rooms are not particularly clean, the beds are not at all comfortable. The location also feels a bit sketchy - we had real concerns about our rooms getting broken into. There are lots of good places to stay on Caye Caulker, but Tom's definitely isn't one of them
