we stayed in a hut in the beach front, a little windy inside, it was quite clean and wide, not expensive. maybe too far from the cayo caulker's small port

This hostel is right on the beach with its own private pier out into the sea for sunbathing and snorkelling. Its exceptionally clean and run by Tom and his family who are very friendly. The rooms are very nice and spacious with air conditioning and nice views.
Best value for money on the whole of Caye caulker (we checked almost every single hostel, no kidding!)

Stayed at Tom's Hotel for two nights as part of a tour group. Room was very very basic - but nevertheless, was clean and cosy. About a 5 min walk to the main area of Caye Caulker... which upon looking back, I would now consider this a long walk - as the island is very small. Hotel is literally right on the water with lovely views, however swimming is not really an option at that end of the island (seaweed/seagrass everywhere). We had a bungalow at the front of the premises - which gave us a lovely seabreeze/sounds of the ocean, etc.
I would recommend this hotel if you are after something cheap with no frills, however I suspect there may be slightly better offers a little closer to the main area/street of the island.

stayed here on a tour, asked to upgrade to single room after already paid for twin, was told $35. so we decided to share, but the ceiling fan didnt work, you would get cooler blowing on yourself. the towels were all ripped and filthy you wouldnt want against your skin. the mattress was just lumps. when rang the bell to ask proprietor a question he said sturnly "what do you want?". this place is the pits, you could get much better deals on the island and this place right at the end so far from everything and to get to it you have to walk through a junk yard. stay away.

We booked here blind based on Lonely Planet. It was an effort to get in contact with the family who runs the place, who eventually just said in an email show up and we'll have a room for you.

Once we got there, i understood why! this place was so great, so low-key, run by a family that lives on-site. not much for phones and internet, but you can pay with plastic.

Rooms were very spartan, but had everything you need - private bathroom/shower, right on the ocean side of the island so a nice breeze, ladies at the front were so nice and accomodating. Plus, the rooftop is a great place to have a drink or watch sunrise/set.

The books make it look like you're way on the far end of the island - not true. it's 15 minute walk from the airstrip (directions were walk to the end of the airstrip, take a left at the water, and you'll see it. it's also only 10-15 minute walk from the main thoroughfare, which puts you away from what little noise there is.

for the price, this hotel was so great! i would definitely recommend it and would stay here again in a heartbeat.

The rooms were fine, nothing spectacular. We had to share a bathroom, which was fine but a bit annoying first thing in the morning when everyone wants to get in. They don't provide any soap so make sure you take some and the towels provided are pretty old and ratty.

The hotel is a bit of a walk away from the main shops/restaurants etc. Its nice that its slightly away from all of that but not so good when its boiling hot and all you want is a bottle of water from the shop as there's no shade along the way.

About Toms,

Me and three of my buddies went to caulker and stayed a Toms. Great value, at least that is what I thought, we stayed in a simple room w white concrete walls, a table, and 2 double beds for something like $8/ night per person. Toms is right on the beach and far enough away from center, but not too far. Dont expect much, I would pad the door or it may knock all night from the wind. It doesnt have a fan, but we really didnt need it because of the breeze and slatted windows. You share a BR which is usually clean but old. This is a budget hotel after all and I think perfect for budget travelors/backpackers.
