“Oh what a FUN Week at Blackbird”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 November 2013

OK, I'm rating Blackbird Caye Resort based on 2 things, Remote Island & Dive Operation.
Awesome - Fun time this past week.
Everything went smoothly from reservation to the Belize City transfer to the boat trip to Blackbird.
We were met at BZE and transferred to the Radison Hotel where we had lunch and some beers and waited on the transfer boat to take us to Blackbird Caye.
The transfer boat ( Big Bird) was nice 1.5 hour smooth ride with Soda, Beer and Water not to mention seeing the sun start to set.
We all were met by Mike and Staff on our arrive, and were pointed to the Bar / Gift Shop area where we had some appetizers while Mike gave a 20 minute orientation.
During the orientation our bags were delivered to our rooms.
3 meals a day are included and served family style in the dining room by some wonderful Blackbird employees that we would see all week long doing other things around the resort.
The food was good and the water on the island is SAFE to drink. The kitchen staff did a wonderful job and even did a barbecue for us on the Blue Hole Trip.
Rooms are nice with quality bedding and AC.
The resort has a bar, a fresh water pool/bar, and WIFI in the office.
No TV's or Phones, which is just what the doctor ordered, very relaxing.
Diving around Turneffe Atoll is wonderful. Saw my first ever Hammer Head the Pinnacle dive site.
Our package included 3 dives a day (except Friday - only 2) which totaled 17 dives for the week.
There is also a Snorkeling option with 2 trips a day and from the reports of the 5 or so people snorkeling you see plenty. Eagle Rays, Lobster, Octopus and on and on.
And Mike was able to arrange a couple afternoons fishing with a local for a few of the guest.
The week ended so quickly and I met some very interesting / friendly people that make it hard to say good by.
What is amazing to me is the people I met at Blackbird Caye Resort have shared emails, facebook and Flickr accounts. In fact one guy has set up a Group on Flickr for us all to up load photos.
This place is for everyone that wants to get away.

Mike, I know you read these, Thanks to you and your Wonderful Staff for a 10 out of 10 time last week.

Room Tip: Do the Blue Hole trip, The reefs around the Blue Hole are killer.

It is more than the beauty and appeal of being so remote. The energy is amazing. This place is rustic and has a small capacity. Between the proximity of the dives and snorkeling, and the moonlight on the sea it is unforgettable. It is an experience, not just a vacation. Go, be fearless! See sharks and Crocodiles and pretty fish. Go !

Great for a relaxing dive vacation. Don't expect to do much more than this and it is amazing. Dive master Cardinal and resort manager Mike are fantastic and the rest of the staff is just as great. Fluffy the 12' crocodile is also a treat and visit the pier on a daily basis.

We had a very special week at Blackbird and are longing to go back soon!

Really its hard to put into words the vibe of this place. Its so tranquil, comfortably rustic, private and supernatural. You will leave this place rested, relaxed, revived and invigorated with the splendour of the Turneffe Atolls. Beauty everywhere you look, if you have the eyes to see...if you're looking to spend your vacation indoors watching TV/hollywood garbage, this isn't the place for you (or maybe it is to turn your attention to what you're missing)! :)

We were beyond impressed with the service and care of the staff of Blackbird. They truly make you feel like a "special" guest and will do everything in their power to give you an experience of a lifetime. Give them a heads up if there is something special going on, I'm sure they will accommodate your needs if its in their ability.

The dining arrangement was really fun! To sit with everyone else at the resort gave us an opportunity to actually connect to others....which is so what is missing in our world. We talked about the day, our lives, funny stories and it created such a great "family" vibe by the end of the week. This may not be for everyone, but know that there are still ways to be secluded too, if you'd like.

The food was AWESOME!!!!!! The kitchen staff busts their hind-ends to create healthy, delicious food that best of all was mostly HOMEMADE!! Hellooo??!! How awesome is that to not have to eat nasty high-volume, low quality food on a tropical vacation. You will not go hungry with your meals....BUT..... do take along some snacks for between meals if you are a grazer. We took some meal replacement bars, nuts, etc.

We did take along some Starbucks VIA (instant coffee), duty-free liquor and some mix before we got picked up at the dock. We were glad we did. Still had a healthy final bar bill with Blackbird but that was more of a celebratory tab we had incurred with a several bottles of champagne to share with our Blackbird "family". ALSO, take your fishing rod/tackle is you're an angler! My husband deeply regretted not taking it along.

Fitness centre: scuba-diving, snorkelling, kayaking, walking (the length of the tiny island), use coconuts for a light-weight medicine ball and we took our TRX and threw it over a palm tree. It's possible if you want to :)

Please seriously consider this wonderful place, especially if you want to unplug from the world and reconnect/reset your focus. This is the perfect place for that!

Room Tip: Bug spray, fishing gear, starbucks VIA coffee, snacks, portable speakers for your music, duty-free l...

My sister and I spent 5 days here in July and we had nothing but an amazing time. The GM Paul and the rest of the staff were extremely accommodating to our every single need. Anything we wanted they made no hesitation to get it done! We wanted fresh coconut water and before we knew it, we had our own coconuts chopped off the tree and cut open for us to enjoy by the pool! The food and drinks were nothing short of delicious. Everything about the resort and the trip as a whole was awesome. We will be coming back for sure!!!

My husband and I stayed at Blackbird Caye for 7 days on our first vacation in 9 years, and it was worth the wait! The staff, specifically Paul, Aixa, Ran and Davey, took care of anything we could possibly need from the moment we arrived. We had a very low-key relaxing week--kayaking and snorkeling everyday and enjoying our time by the fresh water pool. My husband had a problem with his ear from all the snorkeling and Paul did everything he could to help. We also had a malfunctioning charger for our camera and Davey charged our battery for us. We couldn't have asked for a more attentive group of people taking care of us! That being said, we also never felt like our privacy was taking a backseat to service. Overall a great balance!

The property itself is incredibly beautiful--like your own private island! For a good part of the week we stayed there, there were only about 15 guests (including us), and we could go hours without seeing anyone. We stayed in cabana #1, which is a standard cabana with a no neighbors to the left. The standard cabana was more than perfect for us--about the size of a studio apartment with two queen beds and a small desk, and a screened in porch with hammock.

I would say that whether you're looking for snorkeling, diving, kayaking, or relaxing, this is one of the best places you could choose. I can't say enough about how wonderful the staff is! Paul does a great job of maintaining a laid back attitude and atmosphere while still taking care of his guests with amazing efficiency.

Room Tip: All of the rooms are lovely! Views of the Caribbean, a/c units, screened in porches with hammocks...

Don't go to this resort looking for spa treatment or 5 star resort...anything. That being said one might presume that this isn't a great place to vacation. Truth be told I wasn't sure what to expect when booking this resort for my honeymoon. After our trip I would emphatically encourage anyone thinking of booking. The resort is beautiful, but it is basic. Bungalows/Cabins were pleasant (again not 5 star resort, but everything a person could ask for; i.e. 3 or 4 star wouldn't be a stretch). Small seating area in ours (I went with the Deluxe...I think that is the name of the highest upgrade), with decent size minifridge. Cleaning crew made the place look spotless every day, multiple times a day. Beds were very comfortable, and the screened in porch with hammock was heavenly (imagine watching the sun rise from your screened in patio area). Wait staff was very personable, and talking to any staff member felt like a long lost friend you've been dying to see. The manager (Paul) worked like a dog to accommodate any reasonable request anyone on the island had (he and his staff). A person could tell that he (Paul) had a vision for what he wanted the resort to look like, and during our time he certainly left me feeling like it was well on its way toward that vision.

On the way out to the resort we were treated to beers during the 2 hour boat ride...very tasty. While on the resort we had an afternoon bar snack and drink; courtesy of the resort. During all seven days the snack and drink were extremely creative/tasty. Our excursions were led by Belize locals who were extremely knowledgeable about all the wildlife and nuances of the reef. We felt safe, and towards the end very comfortable with our ability to snorkel.

My wife and I snorkeled everyday, and met incredible people. If you are not willing to meet new people this might not be the trip for you (family style dining). I tried to mention all aspects of the trip; bottom line - great trip for adventurous folk. We snorkel most days where we live, and believe that Belize was the best reef adventure yet (All of South Florida/Bahamas included). The resort would have been perfect for lounging, but the best version of this trip includes multiple trips to the reefs in the area.

Room Tip: Rooms further from lodge are quieter...but further from boats, food, and bar. Choose wisely. :)
