The place is just amazing. Stunning sunrises we could actually see from our bed when we opend the doors to get our monring coffee they delivered to our room each day.

The food was great, and more than you could eat. Make sure to save room for dessert, they were fresh, unique and more than worth the calories.

The staff was just great. They all went out of thier way to make sure all the guest were happy. They were able to change plans to accomidate the needs of the guests.

Great variety of dive sites, and the coral and sponges are the best anywhere.

Great trip, and we are very much looking forward to going back.

We just got back from a week at TIR, and I have such a short list of recommendations, and such a long list of compliments, that it's hard to know where to start. First, you should know that there is no TV in the rooms. No phone. No email. No cars. No pushy vendors. No stress. If you need a long of things to do and activities to keep you entertained, then honestly, this may not be the place for you. Instead there are calm waves, cool ocean breezes, outdoor showers (the best!), scampering hermit crabs, and plenty of stars in the sky at night.

Oh, and the food is truly out of this world - how the kitchen manages to excel at a such a wide variety of dishes, I have no idea! The meals are family style, which I loved because we got meet people and make new friends.

Though I'm relatively new to the sport, the diving was also incredible - countless turtles, nurse and reef sharks, eagle rays, eels, the blue hole, the elbow, etc., etc., etc. Every aspect of this trip was truly excellent.

I truly hope that TIR is still this excellent for years to come, because though I often want to try new places to vacation, I am quite sure that I will return someday!

The island is every bit as beautiful as pictured on their website. The home-made food is delicious. (In fact, plan to put on a little weight). And they're accommodating to vegetarians and pescetarians. The small island, family style dining, and package pricing lends itself to a friendly atmosphere, where you get to know fellow travelers and Turneffe staff over the course of the week. On our last day, we traded email with at least half a dozen fellow divers. Our first day of dives was a bit underwhelming due to choppy seas, but after that every dive was amazing. On one dive, we saw a huge loggerhead sea turtle, two younger hawksbills, an eagle ray, a big green moray eel, and 7 dolphins that played with our dive boat overhead. Can't ask for more than that. Our dive master Daniel was very patient with the lot of us newbie divers. The current dive package pricing (7 day) works out to about $235/day. Not cheap, but for half what you'd pay for a night in NYC, you get a cozy cabin on a private island, 3 home cooked meals, and 3 dives. I would definitely recommend Turneffe Island Resort as a good value and great vacation spot.

First and foremost, I must say there's a reason Turneffe Island Resort has 5-out-of-5 stars after nearly 60 reviews. This place is absolutely wonderful, from the beauty of the island, the friendliness of the staff, the excellence of the diving (and fishing from what we heard) - it had all you could possibly want in a relaxing vacation!

So now on to the details... My boyfriend and I were supposed to go to Turneffe the first week of November 2010. However, Hurrican Richard, which hit Belize the week prior, had different plans for us. The resort had to close down the week we were supposed to be there for clean up. However, the reservationist (Danielle) was WONDERFUL to work with and said we could come back anytime we wanted once the resort re-opened and we'd be upgraded to a cabana. She even offered to help change our airlines reservations!

We finally ended up going the week leading up to Thanksgiving from a Wed to Wed. Most of the guests go Sat-Sat, so we pretty much had a private pick-up at the airport and boat ride from the mainland in Belize to Turneffe Island. Once arriving to the island, all the staff (about 30-35 people) stood on the pier waiting to greet us to their beautiful little island. And what a beautiful island it was... From the moment we stepped off the boat, we couldn't believe this little hidden gem nearly 40 miles off the coast of Belize actually existed!

Everything was emmaculately kept. The grounds were clean, lawn chairs were neat in their places, the dive and fish shops look pristine - you could immediately tell they pay close attention to detail and do everything to please their guests.

After settling in, we proceeded to cocktail hour on the deck (the pool bar had to be closed due to the hurricane although the pool itself was still open). Once on the deck, we immediately found ourselves among a very friendly and welcoming group of about 20 guests. They'd all been there since Saturday, so knew one another fairly well, but immediately made us feel as though we'd been there the entire time too.

We proceeded to dinner, which again, I was highly impressed. The food was not only amazing, but all week, the staff prepared the most incredible feasts. Again, how could a place this far off the coast do such a wonderful job preparing such delictable meals?! The serving staff was also amazingly friendly and accomodating! Following dinner (which was served at 7:30 and typically ran until about 9pm), people generally tended to head off to their rooms to get a good night's rest for the following day's dives or fishing excursions. Note: if you're looking for nightlife, this is not the place for you. It's truly laidback and relaxing. It's early to bed and early to rise.

Speaking of early to rise, at 6:30am every morning, the staff would have hot coffee, tea, or cocoa brought to your room/cabana. It was wonderful to wake up and have coffee awaiting you. Breakfast was there served at 7am and the diving/fishing boats took off at 8am. And speaking of diving, it was absolutely FIRST RATE!!! The dive boats were kept small (about 6-8 divers per boat) and the dive sites were within a 10 minute boat ride, so you come back to the island between each dive. The diving itself was gorgeous - great reefs, great sealife, and great plantlife! Tons to see.

Afternoons typically consisted of a nap and a good book - you can't ask for more than that. You can grab a drink from the bar (or your stocked in-room mini fridge) and just relax outside the door of your cabana. Note: there's no public internet on the island and certainly no wireless, so leave laptops at home! The main office has internet you can use for $1/minute, but I recommend just signing off for the week!

After many relaxing days on the island, we found ourselves two days from leaving. While laying on the beach one afternoon (while my boyfriend was out diving), a helicopter landed down the beach. Matt (the resort manager) quickly proceeded to the helicopter and then came over to meet with a note. It was from my boyfriend, saying I should get in the helicopter and enjoy the aerial reef tour while he was out diving! I happily obliged and after about a half hour aerial tour, the chopper headed back to the island, but made an unexpected decent towards this tiny deserted island, where I looked down and saw my boyfriend waving up at me! My boyfriend, Matt, and the Turneffe Island Resort staff had set up this tiny island so the helicopter could land and then my boyfriend could propose to me! It was wonderful. The staff had brought over (via boat) a table and chairs, and set out a feast with champagne! It was absolutely romantic, and once again, a perfect example of the level of customer service that Turneffe provides. Thank you to everyone once again for such a memorable experience!

Two days later, we were very sad to leave the island and all our new friends. But we know we will absolutely return. This resort and everything it offers is perfect for anyone looking to get away from it all, whether it be with your significant other, family, or a group of friends! You won't be disappointed!

........what else could a couple of divers ask for? Oh yeah...........the best bartender in all of Belize!!! Jorge made every evening memorable...........if a little fuzzy.
Our hosts Matt and Morag Koerner did an outstanding job under trying conditions (Hurricane Richard and the islands owner were both fast approaching) and the rest of the staff was both polite and extremely friendly. In fact I can't remember staying at a resort where the staff was consistently in such high spirits. The smiles were infectious.
Our dive master Marcel and our boat captain Brad managed to keep a very diverse group of divers with wildly different skill levels all safe and sound..............and with the amount of sea life we were privileged to observe they did a great job of keeping us all in the same atoll! ;-) Sharks, dolphins, rays, turtles, eels & octopus............the list could go on for quite a while.
Our rental dive equipment was top notch and well maintained. Everything worked as expected.
When we weren't diving we made use of the available kayaks to explore the surrounding atoll, and took advantage of the guided afternoon snorkeling as well.
The food was so good we bought the cookbook, and I've already tried to make the shrimp tostadas...............mine couldn't compare, must be the fresh baked tostadas.
Rooms were large and well-appointed with couches and chairs for reading, and a screened porch for enjoying the incredible views. The outdoor shower got quite the workout as well, especially on those three dive days.
Thanks to Turneffe Island Resort for an outstanding 7 night stay..........we will definitely be back in the future.
